Yup I agree with previous posters, but I also think it has something to do with the sex. MOST geldings I have seen have alot of hair, and in many cases more than some stallions. It's the mares that generally don't have as much, but of course there are exceptions to the rule. Our wicher daughter has ALOT of hair, down to her elbows at 4 and our Heinse mare, while it isn't as long...more to the top of her chest length, it is very very thick and wavy. My mare (Heinse one) doesn't require much maintenance then simply combing through with fingers and detangler once a month. My moms mare(wicher)requires alot, she always rubs it no matter how many times she gets a bath, conditioner, oil ect, blanketing. Of course, I don't care much about the mane thing, and mom does so?? Sometimes I think the more you mess with it sometimes the worse it gets(if they aren't rubbing it or anything). If they are rubbing it, or your worried he'll rub it out, get a good fly/uv sheet with the neck part and keep it on during turnout.
