Shoes are not required for the keur. Some people prefer to put them on just in the weeks beforehand to give them a bit of extra movement, or to give shorter horses that extra centimeter or two to get them past the height requirement for Star.
But the judges are looking for their natural movement, and I believe in the past they were traditionally shown barefoot. It all depends on your personal preference really, and since you prefer barefoot anyway, I would just keep him that way.
