• Art show submission -- KatRose, Saturday, January 14, 17:30:32 [31]
  Well, I've finally started taking that very scary step towards, hopefully, getting recognized by art lovers as a serious photographer. To that end I just submitted six pictures to the San Diego Art of Photography Show that runs from April to June.

  A married couple went to he hospital to have their baby delivered. Upon their arrival, the doctor said he had invented a new machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labor pain to the father.
  
  He asked if they were willing to try it out. They were both very much in favor of it. The doctor set the pain transfer dial to 10% for starters, explaining that even 10% was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before.
  
  But as the labor progressed, the husband felt fine and asked the doctor to go ahead and bump it up a notch. The doctor then adjusted the machine to 20% pain transfer. The husband was still feeling fine. The doctor checked the husband's blood pressure and was amazed at how well he was doing. At this point they decided to try for 50%.
  
  The husband continued to feel quite well. Since it was obviously helping out his wife considerably, the husband encouraged the doctor to transfer ALL the pain to him. The wife delivered a healthy baby with virtually no pain. She and her husband were ecstatic.
  
  When they got home, the mailman was dead on their porch.

  AUSTRALIAN COURT DOCKET 12659---CASE OF THE PREGNANT LADY
  
  A lady about 8 months pregnant got on a bus. She noticed the man opposite her was smiling at her. She immediately moved to another seat.
  
  This time the smile turned into a grin, so she moved again. The man seemed more amused. When on the fourth move, the man burst out laughing, she complained to the driver and he had the man arrested.
  
  The case came up in court.
  
  The judge asked the man (about 20 years old) what he had to say for himself. The man replied, "Well, your Honor, it was like this: When the lady got on the bus, I couldn't help but notice her condition. She sat down under a sign that said, 'The Double Mint Twins are Comin' and I smiled."
  
  "Then she moved and sat under a sign that said, 'Logan's Liniment will reduce the swelling', and I had to grin. Then she placed herself under a deodorant sign that said, 'William's Big Stick Did the Trick', and I could hardly contain myself."
  
  "But, your Honor, when she moved the fourth time and sat under a sign that said, 'Goodyear Rubber could have prevented this Accident'... I just lost it."

  I'm a big fan - have been since I was a kid - and I'd love to be in Florida or Arizona for spring training right now. I listened to my first pre-season game Sunday on the radio (St. Louis Cardinals) and once again felt like all was right with the world for at least those 3 hours.

  Yesterday we had the announcement and artwork for a DVD release of JAG spin-off NCIS. Now we have the announcement and artwork for JAG itself!
  
  But first I'd like to dedicate this news to my brother, Brian Lambert, who has been patiently waiting for this release for a long time now...and asking me about it almost every time we talked! He joins thousands of TVShowsOnDVD readers who have made this show the 2nd-most wanted unreleased-to-disc television program among the voting at our site!
  
  My brother will be able to get this as a slightly late birthday present, when it hits the stores on June 20th. This 6-DVD set is subtitled "The Complete 1st Season, and will run 1010 minutes. We are not sure yet, though, if the set truly IS "complete". You see, after a double-length pilot ("A New Life") aired on NBC, the series began its regular weekly run on the peacock network, airing 19 more episodes before the show was canceled due to low ratings. Stars David James Elliott ("Harmon 'Harm' Rabb, Jr.") and Tracey Needham ("Meg Austin") seemed to be out of a job. But Co-Creator Donald P. Bellisario wasn't ready to let it be over, and soon a different network - CBS - picked up the show for a second season. Something got lost in the transition, though...an entire episode!
  
  The final episode of the first season was to be called "Skeleton Crew", and in the first few minutes of the episode that was filmed, a woman who was Harm's girlfriend got killed. That lady was played by none other than Catherine Bell, and when Needham came off the cast for the second season (the first one on CBS), Bell was brought on as Harm's new partner, "Sarah 'Mac' MacKenzie". But along the way, the "Skeleton Crew" episode was never broadcast until reruns on the USA Network, and the second part of what was intended to be a season-ending cliffhanger was never actually produced!
  
  Since "Skeleton Crew" is considered to be a "lost" episode of the show, it's not clear if the 1010 minute running time includes that item. Perhaps if it IS on the set, it's as an extra (which isn't counted in the running time) rather than as a "mainstream episode". We already know that interviews and a commentary track were produced for this release, and you can expect the commentary to be found on the pilot episode. The studio has revealed that Co-Creator (and Executive Producer, Writer and Director) Don Bellisario did the commentary for that.
  
  Patrick Labyorteaux also stars as "Bud Roberts, Jr.", and Jay Leno, Terry O'Quinn, Richard Crenna, Joe Sabatino, Oliver North, John Wesley Shipp, Gail Strickland, Wings Hauser, and Dan Lauria are among the guest stars in the aired episodes from the first season. Here's the box art for this long-awaited release (as you can see, Needham appropriately stands by Elliott's shoulder for this first season package):

  Yahoo.com HORT HILLS, N.J. - Dana Reeve, who fought for better treatments and possible cures for paralysis through the Christopher Reeve Foundation, named for her late actor-husband, has died, the foundation said. She was 44.
  
  Reeve died late Monday of lung cancer, said Kathy Lewis, President and CEO of the foundation.
  
  "On behalf of the entire Board of Directors and staff of the Christopher Reeve Foundation, we are extremely saddened by the death of Dana Reeve, whose grace and courage under the most difficult of circumstances was a source of comfort and inspiration to all of us," Lewis said in a statement.

  • This is so sad. She was right there beside Chris and went through so much helping him (and others through their foundation) after his accident. I feel so sorry for their son.   Please take time and read this it is heart warming.
  
  Two Choices
  
  What would you do? You make the choice! Don't look for a punch line; There isn't one! Read it anyway. My question to all of you is: Would you have made the same choice?
  
  At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question:
  
  "When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?"
  
  The audience was stilled by the query.
  
  The father continued. "I believe that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes, in the way other people treat that child." Then he told the following story:
  
  Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, "Do you think they'll let me play?" Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.
  
  Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shay could play, not expecting much. The boy looked around for guidance and said, "We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning."
  
  Shay struggled over to the team's bench put on a team shirt with a broad smile and his Father had a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart.
  
  The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.
  
  At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible 'cause Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.
  
  However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing the other team putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least be able to make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.
  
  The game would now be over, but the pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.
  
  Instead, the pitcher! threw the ball right over the head of the first baseman, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, "Shay, run to first! Run to first!" Never in his life had Shay ever ran that far but made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.
  
  Everyone yelled, "Run to second, run to second!" Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to second base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball, the smallest guy on their team, who had a chance to be the hero for his team for the first time. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions and he too intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.
  
  All were screaming, "Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay!"
  
  As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams and those watching were on their feet were screaming, "Shay, run home! Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the "grand slam" and won the game for his team.
  
  That day, said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world.
  
  Shay didn't make it to another summer and died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his Father so happy and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!
  
  AND, NOW A LITTLE FOOTNOTE TO THIS STORY: We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messages about life choices, people think twice about sharing. The crude, vulgar, and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces.
  
  If you're thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you're probably sorting out the people on your address list that aren't the "appropriate" ones to receive this type of message. Well, the person who sent you this believes that we all can make a difference. We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the "natural order of things." So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice: Do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity or do we pass up that opportunity to brighten the day of those with us the least able, and leave the world a little bit colder in the process?
  
  A wise man once said every society is judged by how it treats it's least fortunate amongst them.
  
  You now have two choices:
  1. Delete
  2. Forward

  Word has reached me that my big mouth, which was absent from this board, was missed. (Though I'm sure some of you enjoyed the respite and the silence. LOL) No, I wasn't abducted by aliens. Oh that I was with Clayton Webb or Harmon Rabb in the AB (we need an emoticon for this, LOL) in a foreign land. Wouldn't that be great! (Great for me, that is, not the foreign land.)
  
  Alas, last week I was with my parents at Mayo clinic & I spent yesterday catching up at work. My dad has eye issues and after they checked for everything from brain tumors to athlete's foot, they couldn't find what is causing his trouble. He's a puzzling case, they said. If Mayo doesn't find it, then it must truly be hard to find.
  
  Since I'm basically caught up now, which means we are slow at work & I think I need to start worrying, I'm busy thinking of all the usual things --- what I have to do when I leave here! LOL I have pictures to organize, one day I may actually complete the "Fly Lady life organizing book thing, my recipes are multiplying and escaping from their box .... and my dad asked me to look up some information on a Caterpillar Engine. Ah, I have a project this afternoon. LOL
  
  He needs the cylinder head bolt torque rating and valve and injection settings for an engine. When I went to Catepillar's site, I find the engine spec has kindly been translated into German and Italian, but the English version is not available. It's a sure thing that my mom (she's Italian) has never used those terms in her life, but I'm nothing if not happy to oblige my dad, so I printed out the spec anyway. I look forward to this evening when I ask her if she can translate. Finding this type of info for my dad is like reading a foreign language anyway, and now I have a foreign language in a foreign language. Oh the irony. Too bad they don't cancel each other out and convert to normal English.
  
  Anyway, I'm alive and kicking. Well, not *kicking*, that would probably make my back go out or cause me to fall, so I guess I'm alive and able to move my feet. That has no "ring" to it. Hmm. As for the alive part, I'm pretty sure I'm alive *now*, but you can never tell during the workday afternoon, because my eyes glass over and I watch the clock .... sometimes I think time stands still. And when time stands still are we able to kick or are we in stasis with time? I think I should get another cup of coffee and some of that good-for-you-reduce-your-risk-of-dying-cure-all that is chocolate and figure this out.

  • That's good news, especially the *extras*.....However, I'm not interested in S1, don't plan on wasting my money (sorry money is to hard for me to blow on something I'm not interested in & I could really care less about S1 LOL), so I'll be waiting just a tick longer for S2.   What movies, tv shows, etc., can you watch over & over & over & over that still have scenes that make you cry no matter how many times you've seen it, and no matter how many times in the future you will see, you will see it, you know that *this* scene is coming up, but no matter how hard you try you still blubber like a baby?
  
  I'll start...(and the reason I thought of this LOL)....I was watching on PBS on Friday night "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" starring Cicely Tyson. Now granted I've seen this movie 18 million times, but that damn scene at the end where Miss Jane drudges into town, walks on her own and takes a drink out of the *white* drinking fountain, then looks at the white Sheriff and walks back, they load her on her truck just gets me every time. The music, the acting, the scene is just brilliant, and I can't help but blubber. The cat thought I was nuts as I was already in bed, but who cares what she thinks LOL!
  
  Like I said I *know* its coming, but the music starts and I the water starts falling!

I have such a headache from crying so hard after it's finished. Also, "Stepmother" with Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon rips my heart out, it's probably a mom thing, I don't know.   I swear I'd have no luck at all.
  
  I traded in my leased Jeep on the 5th and bought a new Jeep. It had only one mile on the odometer when I took it out for a test drive. Decided that I couldn't really afford to get into the Prius that I wanted because of money and high demand here in L.A, so I opted to just get into another Jeep. The dealership took the car away to get it cleaned and ready for me to take home.
  
  An hour later I get word there's a "smal problem." "Oh?" I ask. "Yeah, your brake light is on and we don't know why. We'll get it fixed though. Shouldn't be more than an hour." "Okay," I say and sit back to chat with the sales team.
  
  An hour later the manager of the service department comes up and says, "Well, I'm not sure what happened. The guys thought that if they disconnected the cables from the battery, it would reset the light. Unfortunately we now have four lights on: the ABS, traction, brake and ESP BAS." "How long will it take to fix?" asks I. "Oh, we should be able to do it tomorrow. But that means you'll have to leave it here."
  
  "here" was out in Valencia. 25 miles from home.
  
  "And if I do that," I say, "how would I get to work?"
  
  "You can take your old Jeep for now and we'll swap it out when we return the new Jeep."
  
  "No," says I. "I already traded that in, and if anything were to happen to it while it was in my possession, I would be in serious financial trouble. How much will these lights affect how the car drives until Saturday?"
  
  "Not at all. Your ABS just won't work," he says.
  
  ::sigh::
  
  I took the Jeep and drove it home. Didn't notice any problems with it. Drove it to work on Monday and didn't have any trouble. My carpool buddy drove the rest of the week, so no trouble there.
  
  I took the Jeep back to the dealership on Saturday. Made arrangements to meet up with a friend for a movie just down the street and while we were at lunch Ryan, the service manager, called and said, "Umm, you have a defective ABS module. We'll have to replace it."
  
  "Okay. How much more time do you need?"
  
  "Well, there's the problem. We don't have any lying around. We have to order it. It's a restricted part, so we can't order it online, we have to call it in on Monday and explain why we need it. If all goes well, we should have it in Wednesday, Thursday at the latest."
  
  "Okay. So, now what?"
  
  "We can help you arrange for a rental car," he says earnestly.
  
  I'm thinking "help you arrange" is code for "you pay, we'll pick". Um, no thank you. I tell Ryan that I'll just bring the car back next Saturday. I finish lunch and retrieve my vehicle.
  
  It's my turn to drive that week and I'm noticing that even though this Jeep has a 20.5 gallon tank and my old Jeep had a 16.7 gallon tank, I'm getting less miles per tank. Not good. Not good at all! On Friday I have to fill up, 17.5 gallons for 272 miles. That sucks! Big time. I'm not a happy camper.
  
  So I return AGAIN to the dealership this past Saturday and wait while they locate the part that no one bothered to log into the system. Ryan tells me it should be about 3 hours. I go see another movie and get lunch again. He calls, says the car is back to normal and I can come pick her up. I do.
  
  I drive down to my sister's house and spend the day with the girls. My nieces have named my car the Lucky Butterfly. Hopefully that'll help ... some day. Right?
  
  So, on my way to work this morning, I'm driving down Sepulveda - which runs parallel to the 405 - and heard/feel a PING. I look around for the boulder that must have just dropped out of the sky (no overpasses, no big trucks, nothing but regular vehicles in front of me). I don't see anything, but I notice a crack appear just under the windshield washer blade on the passenger side of the car. As I continue the remainder of the drive - about 7 miles - the crack grows. It's no longer a single crack about an inch long, now it's two cracks. The larger is about four inches long and the smaller is about two.
  
  This sucks for a number of reasons.
  
  1) I have to drive to Palm Springs tomorrow to do a site visit for an upcoming two-day meeting I'm planning for the executives of our division.
  2) The Jeep's not even three weeks old.
  3) I had just replaced the windshield of the other Jeep six weeks ago as the result of a tiny crack that nearly crossed the width of that vehicle!!
  
  I can't tell you how grumpy I am about this.
  
  To add insult to (mental) injury, I stopped at the grocery store to pick up a birthday cake for one of our staff. Every month I send out an e-mail that says, "Give me all important dates: seminars, all-day meetings, month-end, birthdays, anniversaries, vacations, etc." and rarely does anyone bother to give me the birthday info. So as I'm walking to the office I run into a coworker. She informs me that yesterday was Clare's birthday and Saturday is HER birthday. I ask, "Why didn't you tell me?" Her reply? "I thought you knew." I asked, "Did you see it on the monthly calendar?" "No, but I thought you knew." ::headdesk:

  • Does California have a lemon law? If so, I think your vehicle would qualify & they would have to put you in a new one. I'm sorry you are having such trouble, it kinda takes away the *giddiness* & excitement of having a new vehicle doesn't it? You have to constantly worry about, instead of being able to enjoy it & show it off. I'll let everyone commiserate with you before telling my sad tale of watching PC go bye bye LOL!           • Does HR have a way for you to "retrieve" that type of info? They should have it all in some sort of database, especially if they mail out birthday cards to everyone. Maybe they have a way for you to access it, & download it to your puter. One possible way around it would be to schedule the last Friday (or any day your prefer) of the month as Birthday day, have a cake or something. Do it every month, then you don't have to remember exactly when everyone's b-day is. And you don't even have to remember that, b/c you can thoroughly embarras them by having them stand by the cake, while everyone else sings "Happy Birthday" to them.       • I think you are right about the ABS module & your gas mileage. There seem to be quite a few things that when they are not working right the on board computer "thinks" the car is doing something it's not & compensates for it, which usually shows up as crappy gas mileage. My check engine light came on yesterday, I can usually fix it. Get this, I filled up with gas, if the cap is on incorrectly, or too tightly, or the gas has more *fumes* than normal, it will cause my check engine light to come on. I simply have to open the gascap, count to 20, & replace it. Go figure. Only catch, the light didn't go out this time. Hubby says another way to fix it is to disconnect the battery for 30 minutes, then reconnect it, & it should be fine. Another go figure. Guess he will check it out when he gets home tonight.         • My car has a similar problem, also cured by opening the gas cap. A real low-tech solution to a high-tech problem. Aren't cars fun? I had a car once that had starting problems. It turned out that the seat belt (!!!) was the source. You had to latch the belt before the car would start. There was a short in the safety features' electrical wiring (seat belt light & buzzer) that tie into the ignition. It took forever to figure this out because sometimes it would start, sometimes not, depending on whether you had already buckled yourself in before turning the key.   LOS ANGELES - Emmy officials are revamping their awards rules for the second time in two years, trying to give newcomers a better chance against the long-running series and familiar stars that can monopolize the annual TV awards show.
  Under the revised approach, blue-ribbon panels will play an instrumental role in determining the nominees in the categories of drama and comedy series and lead actors and actresses in the series.
  
  "This new voting initiative hits the issue of a narrow nominations' process head-on and significantly increases the potential for the widest and most diverse selection of nominees possible," TV academy chairman Dick Askin said in a statement Tuesday.
  
  The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' board of governors implemented changes in 2004 in a similar bid to freshen the competition. Last year, ABC's freshman series "Lost" was named best drama.
  
  With the new rules, panels will pick the five nominees for comedy and drama series from 10 front-runners as decided by a vote of the academy's general membership. Videotapes of shows will be used by panelists to make their decisions.
  
  Previously, leading vote-getters in the general vote were declared the final nominees.
  
  An additional change will be implemented in the comedy and drama series acting nominations. The performers who have made the first pass at picking the nominees will be joined by directors and casting executives.
  
  Members of those two groups also will have the chance to join the panels choosing the final nominees from among the top vote-getters - 15, in this instance - in each of the acting categories.
  
  The approach, approved last week by academy governors, "brings a new eclecticism" to the nomination process, said awards director John Leverence.
  
  Unlike the Academy Awards, which recognize a new crop of films each year, the Emmys are prone to fall into a rerun slump because shows are eligible as long as they air original episodes in the Emmy calendar year.
  
  The result: winning streaks like that of NBC's White House drama "The West Wing," which captured four consecutive best-drama awards. Meanwhile, critics says, worthy shows that are less mainstream or air on smaller networks, such as WB's "Gilmore Girls," have been shut out.

  The script for Prison Break sat in limbo for more than a year before Fox rescued it last fall. My Name is Earl and Everybody Hates Chris were both rejected by Fox before NBC and UPN resurrected them from oblivion. Almost everyone had a crack at buying Desperate Housewives before ABC finally gave it a chance.
  
  The moral? If the Next Big Thing were easy to spot, the networks' search for shows wouldn't be called "development hell." ANd that's exactly where the broacasters are right now, in that manic period between September and April when they spend enough cash on pilots to feed a small country (or cover Jerry Bruckheimer's producing fees for a month). "[This year] the networks have been edgier," says agent Aaron Kaplan. "They're taking chances." So will these "chances" make it to air? Here's your insiders'guide to seven shows you'll likely be watching next fall.
  
  STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP
  NBC nas not one, but two competing series about the behind-the-scenes antics of late-night sketch shows. THe first was written by and stars Tina Fey as - big stretch - a head writer for a Saturday Night Live-style program. The second is Studio 60, a drama from Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) starring Matthew PErry and Amanda Peet. Which will make it to air? Even though Fey's show is from SNL's Lorne Michaels, our bets are on Sorkin, who has Perry's comeback going for him. And NBC wouldnt have entered a reported seven-figure bidding war with CBS for Studio 60 if it didn't think Sorkin could deliver.
  
  THE CLASS
  Like bored toddlers, NBC and CBS weren't playing nice this year. The networks also sparred over The Class, an ensemble comedy starring Jason Ritter (Joan of Arcadia). Why? Well, the fact that it came from Friends co-creator David Crane couldn't have hurt. In the end, CBS bought the project, about third-grade classmates who reunite as adults, for a reported seven figures. And this is interesting: The show also stars Andrea Anders from Joey--which doesn't bode well for that comedy's return.
  
  FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
  Yes, it's inspired by the movie. In fact, on eo fth elone bright spots in NBC's abysmal fall was their announcemen that Peter Berg was bringing the 2004 film to the small screen. If the series is ordered, the Peacock plans to take advantage of the NFL's move to NBC later this year by using the games to promote the series, which will take place in a modern-day small town and feature a high school football team. (Early Editions's Kyle Chandler steps in as the coach.) "It's a family drama," says Angela Bromstad, president of NBC Universal TV. "It can play at 8 p.m., but it's definitely edgier."
  
  THE BLACK DONNELLYS
  Life is funny, huh? One century you're writing for The Facts of Life. The next you're up for three Oscars. Longtime TV vet Paul Haggas (Crash) is returning to his roots with The Black Donnellys - a dark NBC drama about four brothers in an NYC organized-crime syndicate. "It'll feature actors we've never seen before," says Bromstad, whose company is also producing Donnellys. "Paul Haggis brings a level of talent you just don't see in TV."
  
  SMITH, SIXTY MINUTE MAN, VANISHED
  Meet the spawn of 24. Producer John Wells is just one of the several sexcs finding inspriation in the adrenaline-drenched serial. His contribution: Smith for CBS, a drama about a career criminal (Ray Liotta) and his wife (Virgina Madsen). And that's only the beginning. There also Sixty Minute Man at ABC (David James Elliot becomes embroiled in a government conspiracy) and Vanished at Fox (about a kidnapping of a senator's wife). "[Serials are] like movies," says agent RIchard Weitz. "These shows work internationally, on DVD, and, most importantly, for viewers."
  
  Should all this fail - and remember, around this time last year we were all talking about Kitchen Confidential - there's always David Hasselhoff. He's in a project billed as a Texan All in the Family called Upper Middle Class. We're not kidding. And frankly, we're a little frightened.

During one previous Winter Olympics we still could get the Canadian Broadcasting Co. on our big satellite dish, and curling events were covered very well. I remember watching it and getting more interested than I expected. It is kind of amazing how a big round heavy rock can be pushed and the ice brushed ahead of it to make it hit a target.   Disney spent most of his childhood in Marceline, Mo., a small railroad town north of Columbia where I live. As a young man he moved to Kansas City, a couple of hours west of here, and started his career as a cartoonist. A little mouse in his studio became somewhat of a pet, getting the name Mortimer and ending up as a Disney cartoon subject. Mortimer morphed over time into Mickey.
  
  The Kansas City studio, Laugh-O-Gram Studio, is in a run-down part of the city and at one point was near the wrecking ball, but a group of Disney fans have gotten together and are trying to preserve and renovate the bulding as a historic place and tourist attraction. A Columbia guy has been very involved in this project and keeps us all aware of it periodically.   Marceline's downtown supposedly was Disney's model for Main Street in Disneyland. His dad worked for the railroad, the family's reason for living there, and the old railroad depot/hotel has been turned into a museum with a lot of Disney memorabilia. The town had a huge observance a couple of summers ago in honor of Walt's 100th birthday. It is a pretty little place to visit.

  • That's more like the size of a soup tureen than a mug! I sell Pampered Chef kitchen products, and one of our brand new products is a HUGE coffee cup that's 5" across & holds about 16 oz.   • I'm here, back at work after a few days off, drinking the largest cup of coffee I could buy, and then I see this. WOW, I'm in shock. If I drank that much coffee I think I'd die. What a hoot!! (Did I just use the word "hoot"? Oh dear.) As for where I've been ..... I took a few days to visit some friends in Austin, TX. Remember the big Houston-Galveston-San Antonio trip, well this is what it got parred down to when my girlfriend couldn't get an entire week off from her new job: Austin area. Originally the Austin part of the original trip was to spend time visiting a dear older couple we know. Usually, we have breakfast, visit, leave for a few hours of sight seeing, and then return for dinner and a movie and more visiting. This time, the gentlemen is having heart surgery this Tues & he spent one night in the ER while we were there, so he needed more time for resting.     • And our trip had been shortened to Wed - Sun. But with their not feeling well, we spent 2 *full* days sight seeing, which allowed us to see Austin, the Capital, San Antonio (just the Alamo & River Walk), Fredericksburg (German town), Boerne (German town) and Luckenbach (twice). And I took 11 rolls of film. And *I* drove 744 miles (I was the only driver on the rental.) What else is going on? A friend was in a car accident the day I left (not hurt, except for the usual neck/achy stuff, just ruined her car. Good thing the kids weren't with her). My uncle's brother died the day before I got back, his funeral is this weekend. Sunday we're taking my dad to Mayo clinic to get his eyes checked. Oh yeah, somewhere in between I'm supposed to concentrate on work. (NT) --
