• Semi-serious topic ahead -- KatRose, Monday, July 24, 12:41:44 [37]
  There was an interesting article in today's L.A. Times' Calendar section that I thought could be an intriguing conversation here at BFZ. It centers around an art exhibit by photographer Jill Greenberg. It's called "End Times." You can see the images here: Paul Kopeikin Gallery
  
  Before you go in, let me preface it with a comment that these are pictures of crying children. The premise of the series is that these children are crying as a result of the state of the world today. Poverty. Greenhouse gases. War. Etc. However, that's the illusion. The reality is much different.
  
  And that's what's causing the controversy.
  
  The pictures were taken with each child's parent's permission and with that parent standing no more than a few feet away from the child. The photographer used a trick that's been used for years by Hollywood, photographers and family members alike (not all for such benign ends, as I think all of us with older siblings can attest ;-) ) ... giving a child a lollipop and then taking it away. It just happens to have been captured on film for this exhibit.
  
  So, before I link the article, I wanted to get your take on 1) the images and 2) the technique (trick) used to capture the images.

  • For me, both as a photographer & an aunt, the pictures are conflicts within themselves. I can understand why Ms. Greenberg wanted to use such innocence to convey a difficult message (I don't get "end times" to mean the apocalyptic end, but more of a feeling that we're heading in that direction with current issues on all fronts). It's sometimes easier to get a discussion going with images that evoke strong emotions than if images just provoke people (and there is a difference). more inside -- KatRose, Monday, July 24, 15:18:23

  • While the pictures are thought provoking and evoke a lot emotion, I think that they represent lies. I don't know how to explain this, but if the photographer wanted to take and display pictures of children in pain over the state of the world, then she should have gone to where those children are and taken their pictures instead of stand-ins of children crying over stolen lollipops. She didn't have to travel around the world, all she had to do was visit her local homeless shelter, ghetto, barrio, or rat infested low-income housing project.     • Interesting thought. But by that token, then about 90% of photographs are lie, even the ones you take in your own backyard with your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, friends, etc. Because the way you look through a camera and capture a moment isn't actually reality. It's a split second frozen forever. There are photos I have of my nieces that we joke about them "being mad" or "wigged out" or whatever, when all the photo shows is an aberration in the way the face moved and the light shown in that split second. Yet, there that image sits, a momument to a lie. Besides, Ms. Greenberg wasn't doing a documentary series, she was doing an art piece that represents something. It was never suppsoed to show reality.       • abrah, you expressed your thoughts very well. Almost anything recorded visually may be a lie, so that aspect might just be part of the art. But it seems if the artist is as concerned with the current state of our country and its direction, she could have, like you said, found actual children as examples who are living out the horrors she cites. That would have given the project real credibility and turned it from just art into a real statement.         • Kat, I see and respect your point, but I can't accept your assertion that "Greenburg wasn't doing a documentary series, [but rather] and art piece....[that ] was never supposed to show reality." And yet, Greenburg used the pictures as a political statement and even stated that "The work depicts how children would feel if they knew the state of the world they're set to inherit," explained Greenberg..."Our government is so corrupt, with all the cronyism and corporate lobbyists," she said. "I just feel that our world is being ruined...And the environment". To me, she was "putting words" into the mouths of children who couldn't speak for themselves--she doesn't know what they would think or how they would react. She projected her own emotions and political statements onto the children.   • It would tear my heart out to cause even one of those children to cry so hard just so I could take their picture, even if parents were there in a controlled setting and for less than a minute. After linking to and reading the press release, last paragraph, I wonder if the artist had her full concept already in mind when she began. She kind of gives the impression the desperate and helpless reaction of the first child photographed, Liam, encapsulated her own social and political feelings and gave her the inspiration for the rest of the project.     • As a photog, I can tell you that I often go into a shoot with one idea in mind, but something along the way will change or augment or dump that idea in favor of something else.   • I think some of the photos are truly beautiful, showing a childhood emotion rarely captured or shown in a portrait. Some seem more angry than anguished to me, not quite representative of her theme, imho. And ITA w/ AmyLynn & Kat re: the "abuse" charge. What's the big deal? Kids, even 2 & 3 year olds, are betrayed or made angry all the time. Life simply isn't fair, a lesson all kids must learn, whether in a naturally occurring situation or a manufacured one.     • Here's something I see in this -- to do the trick once or even twice is not really a bad thing. BUT, (you knew that was coming), if it is too much, then it could eventually be detremental to the child. Hopefully, the parents only allow their budding actors/models to do this kind of shoot a small number of times in their careers. I could see if they were continually exposed to this kind of trick, that they would start to have a tantrum when they reached any type of photo shoot. I don't disagree that little or no harm is done, since this is, in reality, a natural part of the childhood experience.   • A side to the whole thing is the amount "internet fighting" that is going on over this. The photograher's family & another person are blog fighting over the lollipop trick. Much of the fight is about the fact that people will say anything on the net, b/c they can't be seen, so they are bolder with their comments.     • I, personally, think that's the real issue here. It's not about these particular photos and what they may or may not mean or even how the pictures were created. This whole fight (and many more like it) is about people feeling free to be asses just because no one knows who they are, where they live or what they're like in "real life," so there's no accountability or repercussions for nastiness or meanness. It's one of the reasons I like our board. We can agree to disagree without rancor or nastiness. We can talk about tough subjects without calling each other names or questioning each other's heritage.       • I like our board for the same reasons Kat does, we can discuss, disect, & agree to disagree on anything. Even when I may get some off-the-wall insight (crazyness) on something, I'm not criticized in a detremental way. What is most unfortuante about the fight over Ms. Greenberg's photos is the fact that she is trying to make a statement about the plight of our country, and has ended up with an internet fight very similar to the political fights that she is making her statement about. The fight is causing her & her opponant to act in the same way as the people who caused the world to be in the condition it is in.   • From first looking at the pics, I got the idea of what they were aimed at before reading the write up. But then I read the tirck... and I agree that's child abuse on both the parents and photographer.     • I'll agree that it's not nice to tease a child by giving them something and then taking it away. But where does "abuse" come in? At what level do we, as a society, stop crying "abuse" for the smallest slights and yet trivializing some things that truly are abusive? Is it abuse if a sibling were to do this to a younger sister/brother? Is it abuse to take a kid down a candy aisle in the grocery store and take away whatever they grab in their hands? Not fair. Unkind. Even perhaps mean, if it's repeated with the same child to capture the image, but abuse? I can't see it.         • I guess I just have a different definition of abuse...is this ill advised? You bet! Is it a little mean? You bet! Do I agree with the photog's decision? No, but I don't see it as abuse. If I read correctly it was a one time gig, & again while not necessarily approving of the tactics, its not something being done over & over & over & over on a daily, hourly basis....there to me is too much *legitimate* abuse going on, that we should be outraged at.         • I understand what you are saying here, but we don't know that that's what the photographer did - dangle the candy. Kids can easily get upset if you just ask for it back and they don't want to hand it over. LOL The fact they're upset doesn't necessarily mean they dangled the candy to goad them on. It meant they took it & didn't give it back right away. And remember this was only a matter of seconds per child. Then perhaps they said you can have THIS candy instead. And even if they did dangle the candy, I just don't see this as being part of a abusive pattern of behavior, as I might say would be the case if a parent routinely did as you suggested and told their child one thing, only to change their mind and taunt their child, to what end I have no clue except to lord over their authority and make themself feel important.           • And frankly, the photographer didn't have to be the one who took the candy away. She could have given it to them, then the parent taken it away ----- reminding me of if grandparents et al give a little one more of something than the parents think they should have, and the parent comes along and says, no they can't have this, and they take it away.             • To me, it's not a nice thing to do to the children, but if this is the only time it's done, it's not really child abuse. However, it the parents routinely/continuely or ONLY take their budding model to a shoot where the child is always made to cry or be upset, then it's the parents fault, not the photog's. The parents should insure the child gets more shoots where they are in a happy or jovial state, than in an upsetting state.                 • IIRC, on the "Close Encounters of a 3rdKind" DVD, there's commentary from the young man who played the little boy and how Steven Spielberg got him to look upset and then incredibly happy all in the same take. Steven told the boy that a pet had run away and the boy got very scared and teary-eyed, and then the cameras rolled. And to get the boy to smile so brightly moments later (all without turning off the cameras) one of the crew who had befriended the kid had been dressed in a gorilla costume and at Steven's signal, took off the head and the boy saw his friend, thus the brilliant smile and laugh. Was it unkind to make the boy feel that his pet had run away? Yes. But it got the job done and had no lasting damage because Steven only did it the once for that take. People who work with kids on a regular basis know what works and what doesn't and, if they're good, won't try the same trick on the same kid more than once because then it can be very cruel and potentially damaging.                       • And because of the people that feel "they can handle the situation better than you" syndrome, you have many a younger parent afraid to discipline a child, especially in public. They have been confronted or lead to believe that if they do anything, CPS will take their child away for even the slightest infraction. I guess a lot of it boils down to the fact that we, as a society, sometimes overreact to or overcompensate for a given situation. like child abuse, in an effort to keep the children safe. And it's always the cases that fall into that gray area of the laws & rules that cause some people to react when a parent is disciplining a child in public.   • You know, all the controversy and our own discussion just point out the disconnect that so often exists between an artist and "the public." Something may be brilliant, but the public may reject it for a variety of reasons, and the artist and/or supporters get upset. The heated controversy often centers on things other than the art. I'm not crazy about how she got her photos or why she chose the method of using models instead of suffering children, but it is a side issue. The blogging food fight is ridiculous. I respect artists of all types and do make an effort to figure out what they're trying to convey through their art, photography, sculpture, cinematography, written word, etc. I try not to dismiss it out of hand, even if it is shocking or offensive, because I realize my gifts are not in the arts and hopefully theirs are.   Former "JAG" star David James Elliott says he's loving being the new "big boss in town" when "Close to Home" returns in the fall.
  
  How big is he? "Really big," quips Elliott, adding, "someone said to that Welsh singer Tom Jones, once: 'They say that you're really, really well-endowed.' And he said, 'Just really.'" Ba-dum-bum.
  
  Elliott has joined the CBS legal drama that's been re-tooled "to be more of an ensemble feel" as the new District Attorney. "He's from Manhattan and takes the job in Indiana, but he's highly motivated, highly political. You're either part of the plan, or part of the problem. He's the kind of guy who comes from wealth, so I'm wearing nice clothes and I'm not cutting my hair anymore. I get to be a new guy.
  
  "When they described the character to me at the first meeting, my mind just started going with all the things I could do with this character, so I'm excited to sink my teeth into it."

  • Can I tell you that the comments made in that interview make me dislike the man even more than I already do? And it's not just because he's "popular" or the "star" or any of the other excuses people have lumped on my dislike for him. It's plain and simple...I've met him on more than one occasion and was less than impressed. Each subsequent meeting made that impression deeper. Now seeing this comment ... I can only say, "lovely, just lovely." What a peach of a guy to make such, um, personal, comments about his "character." Shows where his brains are really located, if you ask me.     • Well, you've met him, I haven't. Perhaps that's why when I read it, I thought this is how his attempt at making a joke gets printed in the paper. I mean, someone asks, "How big are you?" in the middle of who knows what part of a conversation, or how it was lead into, and his response is to be funny, and he gives the source he's taking it from .... and you end up with this. Certainly he's not the first to make a comment like that. And depending on who it's from, I'd think, "You're an idiot, grow up." or I'd laugh and shake my head. ..... But since I've never met him, my first reaction wasn't bad, it was only thinking how botched up these conversations are in print. Just my two cents. But then sometimes it augments my enjoyment because the people are warm and wonderful (like with SVU ... LMAO! I wish him well, hope the role turns into a good, long running gig for him, but I won't be watching, the show holds no appeal for me.   So my California Bud of course knows what kind of day I've had, so she calls me on her way home to check on me.....I start my little rant this big ole speech and I'm thinking to myself "Gee what a good friend Kat is she's just listening and not saying a word..."
  
  I get to the end of my rant, and then I hear it....

  She didn't really hang up on me...but I have to pick on her because I truly believe that Kat's cellphone has this built in "Jennifer Sensor" that whenever I start on something really important, or a diatribe, or a rant, or a big long spiel, it hangs up....yeah under the premise of a lost signal sure....I mean seriously how many times can I believe this excuse??? Isn't this kinda like telling the teacher that your dog ate your homework?
  
  Well if it is a built in sensor, Kat really should market the thing because she'd make a fortune.....Just ask my secretary how often she'd like to tune me out LMAO!!!!

  • It's really not my fault. Blame it on the several million people who live in L.A. and who insist on using the cell phones at the exact same time as I do in the exact same area ... which causes black holes to form. The problem is that these black holes travel. They're not in the same spot every day, so there's no way of being able to give Jen any kind of warning of "I'll be right back, black hole again." No. Instead, I just blink out. No warning. No noise. Just silence. Then I call Jen back and she's still on the line because she, not surprisingly, thinks I'm still on the original call with her. Then I wait for her to call me back and I get the "YOU DID IT AGAIN!!" which, *I* didn't. It's my phone. I swear. Really.   "This is Lansdowne Village calling," the voice said. That's the nursing home where my husband's elderly mother lives in south St. Louis, and he is her responsible party. I just knew something awful had happened, and of course we both were in that cross-eyed, "am I really awake?" stage when he took the phone.
  
  They were calling to tell us they were moving all the residents and would call us back to let us know where she ended up. That call came about 4 a.m. Therefore I am a zombie today, being jarred out of sleep twice in a night by a ringing phone.
  
  It turned out that a terrible storm had moved across the city and blown out the electric power, and they were having to move the nursing home residents to other places. The storm happened right after 7 p.m., and when the power company told Lansdowne that they weren't optimistic about power being restored soon, the nursing home people had to take the drastic action of moving everybody. The temp yesterday both here and in St. Louis (130 miles east of us) was 101º, and higher expected today, so I guess they were forced into action.
  
  I think moving people in a hospital or a nursing home would be just a nightmare scenario, much less in the middle of the night. First finding the places for all of them to go, then getting them there. There are about 150 people in this particular facility with all types of health, mobiity, or dementia problems.
  
  We had been watching the start of the Cardinals-Braves game on tv, and literally a minute or so before the first pitch, the sky went gray-black with tinges of green according to the announcers (we couldn't see the green). The wind started whipping, blowing debris and dust all over the stadium, and then the rain started coming in sheets. The fans scrambled to get somewhere safe as signs and loose items blew down and the rain poured. The storm seemed to have formed very quickly and unexpectedly, coming from the southeast across the Mississippi out of Illinois, a very unusual weather pattern for the area. The brand new Busch Stadium's much-touted highly engineered drainage system got its first test; downtown's power stayed on, so believe it or not, that game was played after a 2 1/2 hour delay.
  
  This morning I heard on the news that 450,000 customers across the city are still without power, a couple of very old downtown buildings were badly damaged or blown down, and there is damage at the airport to the northwest of downtown. I am very glad my MIL is safe and has a responsible and caring place to live with administrators who took action.

And if they had waited, and for some unknown reason you tried calling them, they could've had someone manning the phones to say your mother-in-law wasn't available quite yet, she was being moved with everybody else due to power outages. Yes, for sure it was nice that it wasn't "the" call, and at least they identified themselves early, allowing us to rule out other reasons for the call. We have one son living on his own, albeit in the same town, but the other is in Week 1 of 3, volunteering at a Christian camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville, NC. In MO, nursing homes must notify the designated person of any unusual occurrences with the resident. There are some occasions they ask for permission, if it's a medical thing, and most times it's just to let you know what they're doing. I think Lansdowne is more careful about this than many places. AmyLynn, you think like I do about timing of notification! In fact, in the past there have been times they called around 8 a.m. about things that happened overnight.       • The second call in particular could have been delayed, in my opinion, but I didn't realize the extent of this storm until this morning when hearing the news. Families of most residents live in St. Louis also, and I imagine the nursing home was trying to get ahead of the game to assure all these folks that their loved ones were safe. This whole thing began in early evening, about 7:00, so the locals would have had plenty of time to get worked up about what was going to happen with their loved ones. They may have been affected, too, and from what I'm hearing on the news, it may be days before some people get their power back on. I would love to get a little nap this afternoon and may do just that after my annual chore of cleaning out the upright freezer in the garage. It's an awful job at best, and freezes your hands no matter what, but at least it goes a lot faster when the air temperature is helping you out and you don't freeze in the process! I hate cold hands.           • From what we can gather, this storm caught the whole city completely offguard, and it took a while to sort out the situation. I imagine they were running on generators early on, but this is a big place, and their power demand normally is tremendous and worse with the weather as it is.   • Well, on the advice of the woman I spoke to on Friday, I got down there at 7:30 to be first in line when they opened at 8. I got to the window and explained that I believed I should only have one tax code (professional, not retail) and after a little bit of convincing, I got that part fixed. Then she adjusted the tax owed and I paid all but the penalties. She said when I get the bill for that portion to write a letter explaining that I filed for a license as soon as I was notified I needed to have one and ask for the penalties to be waived.         • It sounds like most of the "fun" on fun day revolves around the free liquor! I always hated the holiday party for the same reason; it's amazing how drinks on someone else's dime can change even the best personalities. It's been my experience that they sort of start ganging up as the event goes on, and they can become almost adversarial with the non-drinkers like myself (until they need a ride home). And if getting a buzz isn't your main goal, the day isn't much fun. It's more of an endurance test. The best fun days I've heard of are full of activity, such as an amusement park, where it's not so group oriented and there's not a lot of room for alcohol or complaining or sitting around. Certainly not doing shots. It sounds like you work among a bunch of people who may be a little (or a lot) self-absorbed. It speaks to your credit if you don't feel like you fit in. However, if they had a LIMIT, which Kat said they did - two drinks - then I think if it were enforced then the company wouldn't be responsible. And by enforced, it means that the company does not pay for more drinks than two. At least, that's what a company attorney could argue as long as the company wasn't the one paying for the extra drinks. I think this area is a point of debate & good for attorneys: they argue between personal responsibility and company responsibility. Cost of the event, divided by the number that ATTENDED (cuz you know someone escaped, even if it wasn't you), so you get cost per person. Then divide it by the number of employees this was supposed to be for, then tell the boss, that he could SAVE money by catering a really nice lunch at the workplace & then giving each employee a reward in the form of a gift card. DH worked at a place that as a reward, they all received a gift card to the local grocer at Christmas time to go towards the purchase of their Christmas meal. Before that, they actually shipped in & gave out frozen turkeys, but found the gift card thing to be better. Ask him if he's every thought about the liability the company would have if one of the drunks got into an accident, while drinking & driving ON company time. Sure, you will like some people a lot, and others you can't stand, but it seems strange that we are now supposed to grasp this family thing and run with it as a requirement of the job.   You know the kind where you want a new life, a new day, or a major vacation. The kind where if it could go wrong, it most certainly did, and you were the lucky one it dumped on.
  
  Ordinary day til I got the note from the water company. Yep, one that told me I had used 23,000 gallons this month. Did you hear me scream???? No, let me do it again..................AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
  
  Call hubby who takes the afternoon off to help. He & the neighbor find the leak. Course today is THE absolute hottest, muggiest day of the year, wringing wet doesn't even begin to describe it. Hubby asked if I could have found a hotter day to do this, I said at least it wasn't in the dead of winter when it was 30 degrees outside.
  
  Anyway, it's our problem, although the water dept is going to check their meter connection also. It's probably been leaking for a while, just not enough to notice with kids playing in sprinklers & watering the garden.
  
  Right now, hubby is off getting parts to fix it, but I'm sweaty & yucky. I WANT a bath, with lots & lots of bubbles, both champagne & bath bubbles.
  
  The bright side of the whole thing is that since the bill for this month was $40 for 10,000 gallons, then next month will probably, hopefully be less than $100. Better than the guy hubby works with that had the $400 one from a leak. Yeah, I realize, NOW, that the 10,000 gallons used last month should have been a clue, but I had relatives in for about a month, plus kids playing slip-n-slide, and I was watering the garden heavily, I expected it to be more than normal.
  
  That's about the gest of how my Friday has been. So, how are yours going?????

  • Mine has gone pretty well....can't say the same for my neighbor however....they decided to put a new roof on today, & we got hit with a MAJOR downpour about an hour ago....& yep there was nothing on my neighbors roof, so the water got inside, collapsed the drywall, insulation, & all of her living room stuff is ruined. So TB it could be worse LOL! But I feel your pain, I had a leak a few months ago, & thankfully it was the city's problem & not mine, I think I'd be shocked at a 100 dollar water bill!   • I attended a funeral. My former boss from CBS lost her father last Friday ... the day that her sister was getting married! Today was the services and the reception. All things considered, it was good, I just don't particularly like funerals (not that I imagine anyone does). Then I got home and found a bill from the City of L.A. saying that I owed them $613.41 in overdue city taxes. Why you ask? Because I have a retail business and am a professional who works outside an employer/employee system. i.e. my photographs have been sold and I do event production. Maybe your hubby used power equipment to dig, but the idea of shoveling, not firing up a backhoe, to reach the line is unheard of around here. So how far in the ground do you Alabama folks bury lines? Around here it's about 24-30" deep for freeze protection, but maybe you don't have to worry so much about freezes.   I would like to learn of places you enjoy and why, and even if it's out of my geographic range for a trip this year (central US), it can go in the "future" file and might be in somebody else's range. Some of the best trips I remember have come from tips like this.

  • Where do I begin... LOL... I live in Central FL, and hubby and I just returned from a weekend in St. Petersburg. Spent the weekend downtown, they have a wonderful arts district, tons of museums, restaurants, marina, a great pier with restaurants, shopping and boat tours. The west coast beaches are my favorite (on the Gulf of Mexico). The city of Tarpon Springs has a huge Greek influence, and it's known for its natural sponges. I favor more of the "Old Florida" rather than places like Orlando. Although Kennedy Space Center on the east coast is a great place to visit. (NT) -- Ryne's Mom, Monday, July 10, 8:10:21
  • How about Mackinac Island in Northern Michigan? With the Grand Hotel, its a really neat place to visit....I'm not sure if there is anything to do per say specifically for kids however.....Kat just got back from Colorado, & I've been out there several times visiting my Uncle. I've been to several of the places that she recently photographed (the Great Sand Dunes was one of my biggest ahem miscalculation of driving distance on my part), Garden of the Gods, etc....its a really neat state to visit as well.....Seattle is a neat city, as in Banff up in British Columbia....Just about any state has attractions!         • What appears to have happened is that the casinos promised that they'd leave the historical buildings intact (i.e. the falsefronts from the heydays), but when they started tearing down and remodeling no one in the city council stopped or penalized them. There are some buildings that retain their fronts, but the insides have been completely gutted to accommodate the gambling equipment. It was really sad to see. One of the things I remember most from my younger years visiting was the ability to pick up chunks of turquoise from the dirt roads and wandering around old buildings with original scroll work and architecture.
