Subject: Happy Easter, everybody

I have been in several conversations lately as to why Easter is so early this year; we blamed it somehow on Leap Year, even though we couldn't figure out why. My birthday is Mar. 25; once in a great while Easter is the next day, so I always thought Mar. 26 was as early as Easter could get. My dad's birthday was Nov. 21, sometimes the day before Thanksgiving but never on it - same kind of deal. I wasn't around the last time Easter was this early and for sure won't make it to the next.

Here is the e-mail I received that explained it:

The date of this coming Easter is quite early. Here's why:

Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st full moon after the Spring Equinox (March 20). This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify Passover, which is why it moves around on our Roman calendar.

This year is the earliest Easter any of us will ever see the rest of our lives. Only the most elderly of our population have ever seen it this early (95 years old or above). And none of us have ever, or will ever, see it a day earlier.

1) The last time it was this early was 1913 (so if you're 95 or older, you are the only ones that were around for that). The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the year 2228 (220 years from now).

2) The next time it will be a day earlier, March 22, will be in the year 2285 (277 years from now). The last time it was on March 22 was 1818. So, no one alive today has or will ever see it any earlier than this year.

[> thanks for an informative post. I had no clue that's how they figured out the daying of Easter. I alwasy figured it was just six weeks after Mardi Gras. :-) -- KatRose, Sunday, March 23, 16:48:33 [1]

[> [> You're right too, Kat. Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) and Ash Wednesday (the start of Lent) are determined by Easter. They are about 40 days prior to Easter, and were set up by the Catholic Church. Okay, here's your trivia for the day -- Does anybody know what the Passover is? -- Texasbrat, Monday, March 24, 4:42:48 [1]

[> [> [> If any of you are Jewish, please feel free to state this better - Passover is a Jewish commemoration of the sparing of the Hebrews' firstborns during the final plague sent by God upon the Egyptians to set the Hebrews free from bondage. They marked their houses with the blood of a lamb and were passed over during this plague. -- Ninja_Girl, Monday, March 24, 7:08:55 [1]

[> [> [> [> I picked up the most interesting booket at the grocery store a few days ago, a Passover Haggadah from the Maxwell House coffee people. A haggadah seems to be the guide for doing a seder, the traditional meal to celebrate the passover. It shows and tells how to set the seder table and the foods involved, then in both Hebrew and English it gives the script to be said during the seder meal. The English print doesn't read right to left as in Hebrew, but the booklet does start from what English readers would consider the back. I will keep this for reference and really appreciate its being made available by Maxwell House. -- Ninja_Girl, Monday, March 24, 7:29:20 [1]

[> Hope everyone had a good Easter. I didn't realize it had been that long since Easter had fallen this early. I do remember some March Easters, but they usually fell around the 28th or so. -- Texasbrat, Monday, March 24, 4:44:43 [1]
