] Date Posted: 30/09/06 3:40 Mother Earth has provided us with an abundance of plants with an array of properties... if there's a ailment there's most likely a plant close at hand to help you... BUT if you were limited to only 5 herbs.... which herbs would you choose? and why? [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |

Date Posted: 30/09/06 12:48 No that's the point Ash lol - if you were restricted to just having 5 herbs for the rest of existence, which herbs would you choose to have the option of using? (think of it as your 'herbal first-aid' kit if you like) [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 30/09/06 14:02 Oh, hmmm. I'd say i'd have wolfsbane, deadly nightshade, hemlock, henbane, rue. Just because they are my fav herbs. If i was that ill...i'd use conventional medicine. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Goldenseal, very healing herb.Capsaicum, blood purifier and can be sprinkled into gloves and socks to keep warm. Echinacea, boosts the imune system. hard to decide on just five though. Date Posted: 30/09/06 18:24 Erm....can I just mention something here seeing Black Cohosh mentioned. I read an article in the Telegraph not that long ago written by a doctor that is saying this herb can be very dangerous for some women. It has now been shown that for some it can cause total liver failure. There is no way to tell who will be affected until it happens and by then it's too late. So please exercise caution taking this, liver failure it not funny! Wolfsdream. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 1/10/06 19:23 Hello Wildflower, lovely to see you in the Garden! :) How are you? Black Cohosh - the main problem with Black Cohosh is that there have not been enough long-term safety research undertaken, but there are reports that it may cause liver problems, including, as Wolfsdream points out, complete liver failure. There are many signs and symptoms of liver disease. These include jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes), dark urine, nausea, vomiting, unusual tiredness, weakness, stomach or abdominal pain, and /or loss of appetite. If you think you are experiencing any of these symptoms you should stop taking black cohosh immediately and seek medical advice. For those using Black Cohosh to remedy hot-flushes... have you tried Sage (as a tea)? Some good choices of herbs so far! :) (perhaps Ash has...erm... the erm...least 'useful' choices lol - remind me not to accept a herbal cuppa around your place Ash! LOL) I think I'd choose : [Rosemary : burn the herb if there are colds around; use an infusion to clean kitchen surfaces etc... a strong infusion added to bath water is a wonderful way to soothe aching muscles; infuse in ollive oil for a conditioning hair oil (great for remeddyingdandruff too); the infused oil also makes an excellent muscle rub... rosemary is also a good mosquito repellent; great tea for perking up the brain... I'll stop there - it's a great herb! I like to run my hands through the rosemary bush when I'm in the garden, definately revives a flagging mind and just makes me feel good! :) Stinging Nettle : another fantastic herb with so many uses - especially useful for remedying rashes and skin complaints; excellent for allergies (such as hay-fever and dust allergies etc..). Nettle tea is cleansing and beneficial to the respiratory system, liver, kidney, circulatory system... great for remedying arthritis and rheumatism, useful for anaemics... makes a good hair rinse... oh the list goes on and on again lol. hmmm... I have to ponder a bit longer on my other herbs! So far on the shortlist : Garlic, Lavender, Sage, Ginger, Lemon Balm... oh and Catnip (my felines would never forgive me if I left this off lol - also makes a tasty bedtime tea for humans! also an antioxidant)... So many wonderful herbs! [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
