Date Posted: 23:39:49 08/29/06 Tue I'm an avid fan of tennis. I cant contribute finnacially for the development of the sport here in our country but i always see to it to support the our players by watching almost all of their games. I travel all the way from Bulacan to watched all the tennis games last year at the SEAgames and the Davis Cup games at Manila Polo Club. I never missed out any of the games. Its so sad that i cant find any website of our phil. players. I am very much willing to share some of the pictures i took during the events except those that will be included in the SEAgames coffee table book. It already the property of the Office of the First Gentleman. I hope philta can have a fan zone for players. to cecil and eric thanks for giving life again to phil. tennis. to johnny and pj lets keep supporting them. to my friend denise dy, hope to see you by october. | Subject: Three Pinoy Cuppers Among Asia's Top 50
Author: Subic Bay Tennis [Edit] |
Date Posted: 10:20:58 08/24/06 Thu THREE FILIPINO DAVIS CUPPERS AMONG TOP 50 TENNIS PLAYERS IN ASIA New Pinoy Musketeers: Mamiit, Taino and Tierro August 23, 2006: Subic Bay Tennis Media Center Source: atptennis.com In the latest Association of Tennis Professionals entry ranking released last Monday, August 21, Thailand's Paradorn Schrichapan still keeps Asia's No.1 ranking (World ATP No.43) with Korea's Hung-Taik Lee following closely at No.2 (World ATP No.70). For the first time in modern tennis "Open Era" history, the Philippines have now three players ranked in the Top 50 Men's Asian rankings led by 2005 Southeast Asian Singles Gold Medalist Cecil Mamiit at No.8 and Double Gold-Medalist Eric Taino at No.20. The third Filipino is newcomer Patrick John Tierro arriving this week at No.48 after a decent series of quarter-final results in Thailand and Indonesia Futures. With several tour points still officially unregistered, the Subic Bayer Tierro is due to move up further to a World ATP ranking of no.790s increasing his Asian ranking higher next week. Thanks to sportsman Jean Henri Lhuillier of PJ LHUILLIER Group of Companies who committed to funding Tierro's tours. The three Pinoy musketeers who, together with Johnny Arcilla, led the Philippines back to the Davis Cup Group II for 2007 next year after winning the Group III Asian-Oceana competition, with-out losing a rubber match, involving eight countries held at the Manila Polo Club last May. Thanks to organizers PHILTA, sponsors "MVP of PLDT" and Oscar Hilado of PHINMA, a long-time supporter of RP Tennis whose HOLCIM Company sponsors the ITF Women's Futures and International Junior events. Appreciated are the efforts and leadership of "new" and soon to be "out-going" Philippine Tennis Association President Manuel D. Misa as well as support from Luis "Boy" Mendoza, they were able to bring back home solid world-class players with great characters in Mamiit and Taino for last year's successful Southeast Asian Championships held in Manila where Lhuillier was named team manager. As Ronnie Nathanielz of Manila Standard Today put it, "it's the Renaissance of Tennis in the Philippines", after Cecil Mamiit beat Asia's no.3 player Danai Udomchoke in the Singles finals thriller for the Gold. Eric Taino followed by hauling Golds in Mixed Doubles and teaming with Mamiit, Tierro and Arcilla capping the 3rd Gold in Team event. The same team will be competing at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha. "My heart goes to Cecil and Eric for their sacrifices in taking-off from their tour duties to play for their homeland", says former ATP tour and Davis Cup player Beeyong Sison who experienced the the ATP tour's expensive and volatile ranking system where a few points can make or break the difference between earning either three- or five-figure pay-checks in prize money. "What people don't realize is that both these guys (Eric & Cecil) have to play week-in and week-out with their rankings where a few weeks out means a sudden drop in their position. I believe, like our Asian counterparts, they should be financially supported while they are on tour now that Tierro may be able to join them once PJ gets his ranking up to at least the 500s. Eric and Cecil can play great tennis for the next ten years and can lead us to a slot in the Davis Cup World Group soon", added Sison whose feats included a 1981 French Open quarter-final finish in Doubles in Paris and now managing the International Tennis Center in Subic Bay, Philippines. Date Posted: 05:47:50 11/16/05 Wed With the reinforcement of fil-foreigners, looks like we have a shot at the gold. I believe that the Younghusband brothers, Phil and James, have already arrived last week and are now training with Chad Gould, Phil Greatwich, Felipo Bradio, Andy Prochnow, and the rest of the Philippine team. We just hope and pray that few weeks of familiarizing each others skills, our very own AZKALS will finally rise up to the occassion and finally win a medal for our country. Not just a bronze or a silver medal, but a gold medal. Good luck AZKALS! Make us all proud! [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Subject: Young RP triathletes post strong finish
Author: Mark Stefen [Edit] |
Date Posted: 04:48:48 03/31/05 Thu YOUNG Philippine triathletes Lea Coline Langit and Mimi Lucas finished second and third respectively in the Uni-President Triathlon Championship in Tainan, Chinese-Taipei, recently. Langit, an 18-year-old freshman at De La Salle University, wound up second to Hong Kong's Christine Bailey in the women's event despite leading the field after the 1.5-K swim leg. Bailey took the lead in the 40-K bike leg and poured it on in the final 10-K run to finish with a time of 2 hours and 14 minutes, 1:35 minutes ahead of Langit who was competing in her first international race. The 15-year-old Lucas recorded a personal-best like Langit as she ended up third in 2:26. A third RP team member, 17-year-old Mikki Quilala, finished 11th overall against older and more experienced triathletes from Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau and Chinese-Taipei. The men's event was won by Hong Kong bet Andrew Wright in 1:58:19, with Japanese veteran Endo Kenta coming in second in 1:58:33 and Hong Kong's KC Lao third in 2:02.26. "All three (Langit, Lucas and Quilala) performed well and improved their times," reported national head coach Abet Alonalon. Triathlon Association of the Philippines president Tom Carrasco said the strong showing of the teenage triathletes, whose training was backed by Diner's Club, augurs well for the country's chances in the Southeast Asian Games in November. Subject: Lifter claims favoritism in team selection
Author: Mark Stefen [Edit] |
Date Posted: 04:25:52 03/31/05 Thu By jean malanum VETERAN LIFTER Alfonsito Aldanete yesterday questioned the lineup submitted by the Philippine Weightlifting Association (PWA) to the Philippine Sports Commission. Aldanete, a bronze medalist in the 1997 Jakarta SEA Games and one of 23 national lifters recently removed from the payroll of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), said the PWA can’t possibly form a national team without even staging one selection tournament. "How can the PWA come up with a lineup without a selection tournament," said Aldanete, the country’s No. 1 bet in the 85 kg. event in the coming SEA Games which the country is hosting late this year. The lineup was presumably forwarded to the PSC so that the members of both the men’s and women’s teams can get their allowances from the government sports agency. Named to the men’s team were Alvin delos Santos, bronze medalist in the 2003 Vietnam Games, Renante Briones, Christopher Borreros and Daniel Catingub while the women’s team is composed of Elma Bacaros, Cecilia Atillano and Ester Cabusura. Although he shattered two national records set by Roberto Colonia in the 85 kg. category in last year’s National Open in Cebu City, Aldanete was still removed from the team along with Richard Agusto, who established new marks in the 105 kg. division. The PWA is set to hold a performance test on April 8 while the yearly National Open is set in May in Danao City. Aldanete was even more disappointed when he learned that Catingub was included in the list of the men’s team although Catingub’s event — the 77kg — is not calendared in the coming sports conclave. "Wala naman akong problema kay Alvin dahil sa medalist siya. Paano naman napili yung iba?" said Aldanete. Catingub, Aldanete said, is the son of national coach Danilo Catingub. The weight divisions approved by the SEAG Federation are men’s +105 kg, 105 kg, 85 kg and 69 kg. and women’s 75 kg, 69 kg, 58 kg and 48 kg. "Kung meron ng bagong line up, bakit hindi man lang kami na-inform? Kung performance ang pag-uusapan, napatunayan na namin yan sa National Open," said Aldanete, a bronze medalist in the 1997 Asia Cup in Chinese Taipei. Aldanete, however, was assured by the elder Catingub, who is also the secretary-general, that they are still part of the team even though they are not in the lineup. "Paano kami magiging member ng national team kung wala kami sa lineup. Una nawala yung allowance, then yung pagkain. Baka isang umaga, palayasin na rin kami sa quarters," said Aldanete. Aldanete said he was warned by Catingub not to talk about the issue to anyone. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 16:59:41 03/29/05 Tue Filipinos Roland Claro and Brent Velasco stood their ground against their respective rivals and came away with silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the recent Amateur Muaythai World Championships of the World Muaythai Federation at Gymnasium of Thammasat University Rangsit Campus in Patumthanee, Thailand. Claro, the 25-year-old bet from Zamboanga City, bowed to a superior rival in Blizneu Alyaxey of Belarus in their three-round final in the 48-kg category but gained a lot of experience which he hoped to boost his bid for a SEA Games stint late this year. "The experience I got from this championship will help me prepare for the Muay National Selections in June and hopefully for the SEA Games in November 2005," said Claro. The Russian and Moroccan bets took third place honors in the lightfly division of the eight-day tournament which drew 36 countries. The 23-year-old Velasco, on the other hand, beat a bigger Huseyin Dundar of Turkey to share third place with Thai fighter Rachain Pliensribua in the 54-kg class ruled by Turkey with Belarus copping the silver medal. The Pinoy bets’ stint were sponsored by the Muay Association of the Philippines (MAP), the Philippine Sports Commission and San Miguel Corp. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
Subject: Mendoza 3rd in Asian duathlon
Author: Simon [Edit] |
Date Posted: 16:55:10 03/29/05 Tue Ryan Mendoza finished third in the recently-concluded Asian Duathlon Championship held in Nakhom Phanom, Thailand in the elite Open division behind a pair of Uzbekistan duathletes. Finishing 7th after the initial 10K road run, Mendoza was supposed to be paced by teammate Jefferson Valdez who was right behind at the Transition 1 finish in the 40K bike leg to reserve Mendoza’s strength for the final 5K run but Valdez experienced technical difficulties forcing him to slow down. Mendoza, the country’s back to back national duathlon champion, was unfazed and worked his way into the front. At the 13K mark, he was already in third behind Uzbeks Ivan Morozov and Artem Milheev, maintaining his position until the finish of the bike leg. However, Morozov and Milheev were able to maintain their lead over the Mizuno-supported Mendoza in the remaining 5K run and finished in that order, clocking 1:54.08 and 1:55.15 respectively while Menoza, who collapsed after reaching the finish line, finished 3rd in 1:57.08. Valdez settled for 6th place overall. In the women’s division, local bet Kaye Lopez finished 4th behind champion Japanese Magum Shigaki and runners-up Radka Vodickovr of the Czech Republic, and Claire Murray of Hong Kong. Subject: GM Antonio wary of Vietnamese in coming SEAG
Author: Simon [Edit] |
Date Posted: 01:56:00 03/28/05 Mon FOR GRANDMASTER Rogelio “Joey” Antonio, this year’s preparation for the Southeast Asian Games is far better than what the team did two years back. Antonio said that losing the overall chess crown before the hometown crowd would not just be disastrous but humiliating as well. "Ngayon pa lang naghahanda na kami para sa SEA Games. Maganda talaga ngayon kasi plantsado na ang mga tournaments na sasalihan namin. Mas maayos ngayon ang NCFP (National Chess Federation of the Philippines)," Antonio told the Bulletin. The Philippines did well when chess debuted in the 2003 Vietnam SEA Games, winning four golds, one silver and one bronze behind the impressive performances of Mark Paragua, GM Eugene Torre and Antonio. Paragua, a GM candidate, was a tower of strength for the national squad as he collared three gold medals to emerge as the most bemedalled Filipino athlete. Vietnam, according to Antonio, poses a serious threat for the country’s title bid. "Given na diyan ang Vietnam sa paglaban sa overall. Nandiyan kasi si Dao Thien Hai at Nguyen Anh Dung. Marami na rin silang mga nasalihan tournaments abroad na malalakas kaya sila ang mahigpit na makakalaban natin," added Antonio, who is set to play in several tournaments next month to boost his title bid. "Actually, naniniwala akong kaya pa nating masurpass ang four gold medals natin sa (2003 SEAG in) Vietnam. Mas malalim ngayon ang bench natin kumbaga. Sa Vietnam, the way I see it, nasa top 2 boards lang sila. Sa atin, nandiyan si Mark, si Eugene then meron pa tayong mga IMs (International Masters) na kayang makipagsabayan," noted the battle-scarred Olympiad veteran. With chess getting the support it badly needs from the First Gentleman’s Foundation Medalyang Ginto program, Antonio believes the country is capable of producing more grandmasters in the future. Antonio is set to join the Filway chess tournament in Davao City this April 23 before flying to Bangladesh on April 4 to 14 for the 7th United Insurance and United Leasing Grand master tournament. FIDE Masters Emmanuel Senador and Oliver Dimakiling would also be joining him in the Bangladesh tournament where they hope to sharpen themselves in time for the SEA Games this year. Antonio currently ranks second among Filipino woodpushers with an ELO rating of 2539. Paragua has 2581 [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Subject: Miñoza 4th in EPGA leg, earns P2.4M
Author: Mark Stefen [Edit] |
Date Posted: 01:48:11 03/28/05 Mon Frankie Minoza hit pay dirt in the rich European PGA Tour for the first time in a long while yesterday, earning euro 34,708 (about P2.4 million) after finishing joint fourth with Colin Montgomerie at the conclusion of the Indonesian Open. Earlier in the day, Minoza matched par in the last four holes of his rain-delayed third round for a stirring closing card of eight-under 66. Then he sustained the momentum of his third-round charge with a four-under-par 66 in the final round for a remarkable 18-under total of 262 in the tournament he has ruled twice in the past. Minoza was eight under through 14 holes Saturday in the rain-suspended third round, leaving the 45-year-old Filipino star just a stroke out of the lead and in position to take a run at a 59. Minoza, the 1986 and 1990 winner, needed to play the final four holes in three under yesterday morning to become the first player to break 60 on the PGA European Tour and Asian Tour. The revered Filipino player, however, settled for 62 and, with his final-round 66, came in fourth behind eventual champion Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand, second placer Raphael Jacquelin of France and Australian Adam Fraser. But it could already be a morale-boosting finish for Minoza, who lost his Japan Tour card. Wiratchant won his first European Tour title with a seven-under-par 63 for 25-under 255. Wiratchant closed in style with a birdie on the 18th hole to finish five shots ahead of F Jacquelin with Fraser a shot further back in third after a hole-in-one on the 17th. Montgomerie came agonizingly close to the first ever sub-60 round on the European Tour in the final round Montgomerie had a 10-foot putt on his final hole that would have given him a stunning 59, but left it several inches short of the cup. For results from round 1 to round 4, see above table. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
Subject: Buenavista exceeds Asian mark in 20K
Author: Mark Stefen [Edit] |
Date Posted: 01:45:35 03/28/05 Mon Ranged against world-class competition, Filipino long distance ace Eduardo Buenavista surpassed the Asian record for the half-marathon in South Korea. Reports reaching Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association President Go Teng Kok indicated that Buenavista’s clocking of one hour, 3 minutes, 42 seconds for the 20-kilometer distance was 15 seconds shy of the time established by a Japanese runner who claimed silver. Go said organizers reported the premier race drew roughly 12,000 runners from different countries. The sterling performance placed Buenavista highest among Southeast Asian runners and elevated him alongside regional giants Japan and Korea, which each had two entries who gave the Asian standard a beating as they occupied fourth to sixth. The entry from Kenya, guru of long distance races, dominated the contest with a time of 1:02:41. The scintillating effort also earned Buenavista $4,000. "This is a superb response to the sponsors of athletics. It is clear now that our athletes do not concern themselves with the incentives but with the trust of people and institutions who show the willingness to provide them with sound opportunities," said Go. Buenavista’s participation in the high-caliber race was the second major international exposure for the athletics association, courtesy of San Miguel Corporation and PAGCOR, which both extended valuable support to the Gintong Medalya Foundation, a brainchild of First Gentleman Miguel Arroyo, that revived the godfather system in Philippine Sports. Last week, two Filipino tracksters — steeplechaser Rene Herrera and 5,000 artist Mercedita Manipol — competed against European and American counterparts in the short race cross court event in France as part of their preparation for the Southeast Asian Games in November. The two were the only Southeast Asian entries invited to join. www.philstar.com [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Subject: Gymnasts eye 9 golds
Author: Mark Stefen [Edit] |
Date Posted: 18:00:13 03/25/05 Fri GIVEN THE right equipment and proper training, the Philippine gymnastics team can win at least 9 of the 18 gold medals at stake in the coming SEA Games which the country is hosting late this year. This was the assessment of long-time national coach Sonny Ty as he expressed confidence his young but gutsy squad can deliver in the country’s gold medal machine having the built-in home advantage. Their goal is quite high but it’s realistic. "We are aiming for a record nine-gold haul in the SEA Games because we believe that our athletes can deliver, if the equipment is available and the training is right," stressed Ty, who is also technical committee chairman of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) "The maximum target is to win half of the total number of golds at stake. Realistic naman yung nine golds, but we would be happy if we get six," said Ty. A total of 18 gold medals are up for grabs in gymnastics — eight in the men’s artistic, six in the women’s artistic, two in the rhythmic event and two in aerobics. The most number of gold medals won by the RP squad in the biennial event were five during the 1979 Jakarta SEA Games, two of them coming from Ty, who triumphed in the vault and floor exercises. Two years ago in Vietnam, the nationals went home with only two golds, four silvers and five bronzes. In the 1991 Manila SEA Games, the Filipino gymnasts won four gold medals. The GAP has assembled a formidable lineup led by American Cup silver medalist Roel Ramirez, who is expected to win at least two gold medals. Joining Ramirez in the team are Fil-Am Noel Faustino and Bonnie Brydon Sy in the men’s artistic gymnastics (MAG); Caissa Saguisag, Patricia Paraso and Emille Krista Santos in the women’s artistic gymnastics (WAG) and Angelita Basco, Nica Calapatan and 1997 Jakarta SEAG medalist Tammy de Guzman in the rhythmic events. Ramirez’s feat in the prestigious American Cup held last February at the Nassau Veterans Coliseum in Long Island, New York made him a world-class athlete as he bested participants from traditional powers like China, Albania, Canada, Mexico, USA, Japan, Latvia, Venezuela, Czechoslovakia, Australia, Croatia, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands, Spain, France, Hungary, Finland and Venezuela. "Roel’s feat is something to be proud of because the American Cup is a World Cup Category A gymnastics event participated by top gymnasts from all over the world," said Ty. Twenty-one-year-old Ramirez, a gold medalist in the Vietnam SEA Games two years ago, scored 9.312 in the vault. He missed the gold by just 0.145 point. Subject: Angping bares softball teams, predicts 2 golds
Author: Mark Stefen [Edit] |
Date Posted: 17:59:10 03/25/05 Fri Count two gold medals for softball in the 23rd Philippine Southeast Asian Games. This was the bold prediction made by Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines president Harry Angping after announcing the final roster of the men’s and women’s teams competing in the biennial meet slated Nov. 27-Dec. 5. "Based on our past performances in international events, we have a strong chance of winning the gold medal in both the men’s and women’s softball in the SEA Games," said Angping. Making up the Blu Girls are members of the team that finished fifth in the 2004 Asian Softball Championship in Manila, headed by veteran Corazon Soberre and collegiate standouts Dione Macasu, Esmeralda Tayag, Heidilyn Arca and Syrel Ramos. Other members of the squad are Nimpa Baral, Gina Salvador, Nelia Lara, Hayde Bongas, Janet Vallite, Reylam Ardio, Elaine Caladiao, Joy Lanting, Joan Locsin, and newcomers Lyn Batiling, Claire Laurilla and Kimster Liwas. The men’s side, on the other hand, is made up mostly of the same team that qualified in the 2004 ISF World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand. It includes Romeo Bumagat, Mark Rae Ramirez, Isidro Abello, Apolonio Rosales, Manuel Bacarisas, Manolito Binarao, Fidel Moncera, Rogelio Rojas, Orlando Binarao, Jasper Cabrera and Melvin Villegas. Luis dela Cruz, Victor Mariquina, Roswald Palacol, Florante Acuna and Anthony Santos complete the SEAG-bound line-up. The Blu Boys will be handled by Asaphil secretary-general Eufracio dela Cruz and assistants Nilo Barajan and Ely dela Cerna with Rolly Malaguit calling the shots for the Blu Girls with Roberto Ituralde and Isaac Bacarisas as assistants. Asaphil is planning to hold tune-up games in Chinese Taipei in October for the women’s squad and in Japan the same month for the men’s side, and a SEAG level competition in Jakarta, Indonesia in November. Subject: HORWOOD SPOILS AGUILAR’S BACK-TO-BACK TITLE BID IN MOTOCROSS MASTERS OF ASIA
Author: Mark Stefen [Edit] |
Date Posted: 14:52:10 03/24/05 Thu
PUERTO PRINCESA CITY – Australia’s Christian Horwood spoiled the country’s hopes for a back-to-back crown as he unveiled an imposing performance in the final moto to rule the 2nd Motocross Masters of Asia 2005 FIM-Puerto Princesa International Motocross Championship at the four-hectare rolling track near the City Hall here. It was reminiscent of what actually happened in the kickoff leg in Guam last month. The stage was set for the back-to-back crown bid of Team Philippines Caltex Revtex-Oakley rider Glenn Aguilar who ruled the first race of this event sponsored by the City of Puerto Princesa, the Philippine Olympic Committee, the Philippine Sports Commission, the Department of Tourism, Cebu Pacific, Negros Navigation, Dickies, 2Go Aboitiz, HJC Helmets, Oakley, Highland Products, Yehey.com, Motorcyclephilippines.com, Inside Racing, Broadband Philippines, Dusit Hotel, Hotel Asturias, Sports Plus, Caltex Revtex, Asian Spirit and GCG Pipes. But Horwood’s strategy, the same formula he used in Guam, worked out equally fine and spoiled the hopes of more than 30,000 townfolks who witnessed the event. After finishing second to Aguilar in the first moto, he refined his moves in the final race – calculating his speed as he negotiated every curve with near-precision style.
Horwood and Aguilar came side-by-side entering the start/finish line during the first three laps. However, the Australian champion was much faster at the final stretch and his patience paid off in the seventh lap where he controlled the holeshot for good. Both earned similar 47 points for this leg but Horwood, showing no signs of the leg injury that haunted him last year, claimed the round pennant with the bigger weight on the final moto. But Aguilar remains on track in his bid to reclaim the Asian Motocross crown he bagged two years back as he and the Australian champ still share the top spot with 94 points. Chaiyan Romphan of Thailand, who wound up fourth and third in the day, claimed third place with 38 points. Two other title favorites – James Robinson of New Zealand and Aep Dadang of Indonesia – ended fourth and fifth with 35 and 34 points respectively. Newcomer Arnon Theblib of Thailand showed big promise as he took sixth place with 31 points while multi-titled former national champion Jovie Saulog proved ageless as he finished seventh overall in the tough 28-man field.
Completing the top 10 finishers are Denny Orlando of Indonesia, Motokazu Otsuka of Japan and Caltex Revtex rider Gabriel “Bebet” de la Cruz. Former national junior champion Kenneth San Andres gave an impressive fight against the more experienced foreign and local riders as he wrapped up 11th overall. Contrastingly, defending champion Tadakazu Otsuka of Japan had a bad day as engine problems forced him out of the first race while finishing only ninth in the final moto. Aguilar likewise ruled the Pro Open class over Caltex Revtex teammate Bebet de la Cruz and third placer Jovie Saulog while San Andres prevailed over PJ Alabanza and Carlo Rodriguez in the Expert 125 division. Aldi Lazaroni ruled the Junior 80-85 division over Cebuano Jon Eleazar Adlawan and Jan Carlo Rellosa while Emmanuel John Flores topped the Junior 65 class over Patrick Orbe and Jerick Mitra. Winning the other classes are Jimboy Marcelo (Enduro King), Weng Yapparcon (Novice Open and Beginner Open Production), Joseph Ian Reyes (Novice 125), Jun Jun San Andres (Veterans), Ronaldo Mangosong (Executive), Jed Luna (Enduro Novice), McLean Aguilar (Peewee Beginners), Rap Rap Enriquez (Peewee Advanced), Reynante Santos (Scooters) and Mandy Masculino (Pantra class). There were more than 500 applicants to this four member team, and it is so fortunate that one of the four is a Filipino. The rest of the team are India’s Roy Rupesh (154) and Indonesians Dewantoro Agung-Bagun (161) and Christopher Rungkat (248). This opportunity is provided to under 16 years old netters only. Good luck to Kyle! Sa mga matatanda naman, Cecil Mamiit and Eric Taino have been finally listed in our team of netters who will be representing Philippiens comes SEA Games. Cecil Mamiit is currently ranked 230 in the ATP Ranking, while Eric Taino is ranked 404. I hope both players who are currently playing at ATP as USA as their country, will deliver the goods. And I surely hope na sana palitan na nila ang country they represent sa ATP as they continue their campain because this time, Philippines is paying for their ATP campain in Wimbledon and USA. On the side note, both players partnered this month at the Heineken Challenger in Vietnam where they won the Doubles Trophy. In the singles event, Cecil Mamit was defeated by Yen Hsun Lu of Taipei. Eric Taino did not play the singles match; he seems to be a Doubles Specialist. In Taekwando, our jins who will see action in SEA Games include Olympians Thsomlee Go and Mary Antoinette Rivero; Dax Morfe, Carlos Padilla, JR Rivero, Ernesto Mendoza, Alex Briones, Eunice Alora, Aphrodite Brillantes and Lorraine Catalan. Bothe Thsomlee and Mary Antoinette will fly to Spain for the World Championships middle of this year. Our jins promise to surpass their gold medal haul of 8 gold medals when we last hosted the SEA Games. Good luck to them. IN SWIMMING: Miguell Molina will start his campaing at the US NCAA Swimming Championship today where he is one of the seeded players in both 200 and 400 yards Individual Medley. He will also be playing in the 200 yards Breaststroke event. Good luck to Miguel. IN GOLF : Both are women and men campaigners will be seeing action today. Subject: Lawn bowlers vow to pull big surprise
Author: Simon [Edit] |
Date Posted: 03:19:06 03/23/05 Wed BOLSTERED BY the support of San Miguel Corp. (SMC), the national lawn bowls men’s and women’s teams are confident of contributing in the gold medal production when the country hosts the 23rd Southeast Asian Games late this year. Unknown to many, the national lawn bowl players have chipped in two silver and three bronze medals in the 2001 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. SMC, which is the sport’s godfather, is pledging R1 million for the training and preparation of the national players for this year’s biennial meet. A series of competitions are lined up for the Filipinos as they are set to compete in the Tiger Bowls in Hong Kong late this month and the World Indoor Championships this April, followed by the Asian Championships in Malaysia in June and the Asia-Pacific Championships in Australia this November. Philippine Lawn Bowls Association (PLBA) president Ronalyn Greenlees believes the present crop of national players are now capable of making a big push towards snaring the country’s first gold medal in the event. Veteran internationalists Christopher Dagpin and Angelo Morales, both members of the national squad that placed a respectable seventh in the triples event in the 2004 World Championship in Scotland, are expected to spearhead the country’s charge. Also in the men’s team are Hermenio Dagpin and Ronald Lising, a silver medalist (fours) in the 2003 Asian Championships, Leoncio Carreon, Jr. and Reynaldo Samia. Carmen Bestel Anderson, a four-time gold medalist in the Asia-Pacific Championships, banners the country’s national women’s squad. Other members are Rosita Bradborn, Vilma Redima Greenlees and Milagros Witheridge. —Richard DY [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 04:20:32 03/22/05 Tue EFREN "Bata" Reyes beat compatriot Rodolfo "Boy Samson" Luat, 9-5, Sunday to win the 18th Japan Open and the top purse of 1,500,000 yen (about P773,000) at the New Pier Hall Kaigan in Tokyo, Japan. The 50-year-old Reyes trounced Japan's Masaki Tanaka while Luat downed another Japanese, Hidenobu Takanami, in the semifinals to arrange the all-Filipino title clash. In so doing, Luat avenged another Filipino, former world No. 1 Francisco "Django" Bustamante, who was beaten by Takanami in the last 64. Tanaka, on the other hand, ousted ex-world champion Chao Fong-pang of Chinese-Taipei in the last 128. The win boosted Reyes' hold of the No. 1 spot in the 2005 Player Money List with total earnings of $46,919.00. At second place is former US Open winner Corey Deuel who has won $23,482.00. Reigning world pool champion Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan is in third place ($23,324.00), while Bustamante is in fourth ($22,272.00). According to Ish Caparas of Puyat Sports, other notable participants in the Japan Open were Mika Immonen of Finland and Ralf Souquet of Germany. The Filipino brigade included Antono Gabica, Ramil Gallego, Antonio Lining, Warren Kiamco, Dennis Orcollo, Roel Esquillo and Dondon Razalan. Billiard and Snooker Congress of the Philippines president Ernesto Fajardo said the Reyes-Luat finals proved once again that Filipinos stand a good chance of sweeping the gold medals in billiards in the 2005 Manila Southeast Asian Games. Subject: Jins begin SEAG buildup
Author: Simon [Edit] |
Date Posted: 04:19:21 03/22/05 Tue By jean malanum With the overall championship in the Southeast Asian Games as its objective, the Philippine Taekwondo Association will send an 11-member Philippine team to the 17th Men’s and 10th Women’s World Championships in Spain next month as part of its ongoing buildup. Mary Antoinette Rivero and Tshomlee Go, both veterans of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and gold medalists in the 2003 Brunei SEA Games, will banner the team leaving on April 9 to join the 97-nation event to be held at the Palacio de Deportes in Madrid. Other members of the team are Dax Alberto Morfe, Alexander Briones, Ernesto Juan Mendoza III, Manuel Rivero Jr., Carlos Jose Padilla V, Kathleen Eunice Alora, Maria Criselda Roxas, Aphrodite Brillantes and Loraine Lorelie Catalan. Except for Padilla, the rest of the men’s team are veterans of the Brunei SEA Games and have won at least a medal each. Padilla, gold medalist in the US Open Invitationals three years ago, was a last-minute replacement for John Paul Lizardo, who fractured his foot during training. All members of the women’s team have also won a medal each in the Asian Taekwondo Federation (ATF) held last December in Jakarta with Brillantes and Roxas winning gold medals while Catalan a silver. Alora and Rivero settled for the bronze in their respective events. "We have a very competitive line-up. I believe that these athletes have the skills and are all deserving to represent the country in a tournament like the World Championships," said Barcelona Olympics bronze medalist and coach Stephen Fernandez. Other members of the coaching staff are Jesus Morales III and Victor Emmanuel Veneracion. "Having played in Athens, both Rivero and Go can be our strong bets. Even Morfe can be considered, too, because he won the bronze in the 2001 World Cup in Vietnam. We just have to be optimistic that our athletes will deliver," said the 37-year-old Fernandez, who played for the national team from 1984-92. Aside from the World Championships, the national jins are also scheduled to attend a two-week training at the Korea National University of Physical Education in May and will compete in the Korea Open in June. "We want the best training for our national athletes. Two international exposures and a two-week training in Korea will definitely prepare our athletes for the SEA Games," said Fernandez. The Philippines failed to dethrone host Vietnam for the overall title two years ago, winning only five golds, three silvers and six bronzes as against Vietnam’s five golds, four silvers and four bronzes. The Filipino jins have ruled the sport since the 1991 Manila SEA Games until Vietnam wrested the title in the 1999 Brunei Games. The Vietnamese defended the title in the 2001 Kuala Lumpur Games. Meanwhile, PTA vice president Sung Chon Hong and national coach Manolo Gabriel are joining the Philippine team in Madrid as head of delegation and team manager, respectively. Sung will attend the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Executive Council meeting on April 11 at Sofitel Hotel and the 17th General Assembly on April 12 at the Hotel Convencion in Madrid. Subject: There were ‘manny’ problems from the start
Author: Mark Stefen [Edit] |
Date Posted: 19:41:08 03/21/05 Mon I don't mind if this gets merged, but please do here me out. Thanks, nerdox, for the encouragement. “It doesn’t matter whether you win by an inch or a mile. Winning is winning.” - Quote from The Fast and the Furious. Before you put the blame on Manny’s gloves or his reluctance to deliver his killer blows, have you ever considered that this is the “noisiest” campaign Manny Pacquiao embarked? What do I mean by that? This is the first time in Pacquiao’s career that we had a daily update of how his training was going on. It’s good to know what he is up to or how he is doing, but has it ever dawned on you that we probably gave away too much? Articles regarding the Filipino southpaw’s training were on local broadsheets everyday. Some of them were even posted on boxing websites and reportedly, videos of Manny training could be downloaded on the net for free. I don’t think Erik Morales’ handlers are dumb enough not to surf the net to scout the opposition, especially if his opponent is getting all this unwanted attention weeks before the fight. At the same time, what did we hear from Morales? Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Do you know what happened to the vaunted “Manila Ice”? It was supposedly a right hook to the body that would set up Manny’s powerful left. Morales’ stance countered it. How could Pacquiao deliver the punch when the Mexican’s torso was positioned away from the trajectory of the punch? Notice that whenever Manny released his right to Erik’s body it usually caught nothing but air. With Pacquiao’s guard down, Morales would hit him solid on the face that would stun our bet and would send our man retreating. Either that or Morales would crouch so low to hide his abdomen while at the same time sidestepping to evade Pacquiao’s flurry of punches. What’s the point of this rant? Simple. Why didn’t we leave Manny alone with Freddie Roach in the Wild Card Gym to prepare for the bout? Did we really need to trace his every step? It is so unusual for Roach to allow these many people watch Pacquiao punch the mitts. And it seems that he tolerated this by entertaining the media. Either that or the reporters lounging around the ring were so persistent in having their bylines printed that Roach broke down and started telling everything to everyone. It’s a chicken or egg scenario, but this could have been prevented if the bespectacled former boxer barred them from the start. I hold Roach in high regard because he made champions out of the boxers he handled, but I think this is the first and biggest mistake he has committed as a professional trainer. This is the time I feel that media overdid its purpose. Didn’t you find it uncanny that sports headlines were about Manny’s preparation instead of the preparation we are supposed to be doing for the SEA Games? It came to the point that one legislator even pointed this out (pun unintended). While Roach was predicting a knockout, didn’t you find it weird Pacquiao was all coy and humble in the last pre-fight article printed in the Philippine Daily Inquirer? He didn’t predict on what round the main card would end, rather he just mentioned that he would do his best for his countrymen. Coming from Pacquiao, or from any other boxer, humility is the last thing we would want to hear. Where was the confidence, the spunk, the aura that said, “I would send him to sleep in three rounds.” Unarguably, Manny’s a modern day hero, a living legend even. But should we be treating him as a commodity? I mean weeks before the Fahsan 3K Battery bout in Manila, he was playing in an invitational billiards tournament and was shooting commercials and a reality program. All the while I thought that training in Wild Card was a good thing for the “Pacman” because he would be isolated away from prying and curious eyes. Apparently, what happened was the exact opposite. During his time in California, a documentary, snippets of interviews, and daily written updates were made to chronicle his every move. Just shows that we are suckers for “blah” news. Was this a sign of arrogance coming from Team Pacquiao that they let his workout be a public spectacle? Was Philippine media ignorant not to realize that every article they release or every interview they broadcast could reach Morales’ brittle hands? We basically gave away our fight plan. Now you know why the bemustached left-hander couldn’t land his so-called “Manila Ice.” And let’s not even get into the gloves, please. And whether the gloves mattered to the outcome or not, it was, in the first place, an oversight on the part of Pacquiao’s higher management. Finally, what’s this rumor I heard that Pacquiao had his medical exam the day before the match? What gives? So who am I putting the blame on? Go figure. As much as I don’t want to sound sourgraping because looking at the bright side, what we witnessed that Sunday afternoon was a resilient warrior not willing to give up. Bloodied up and still raring to go, that’s the Filipino race personified in one individual. But obviously, there was something wrong right from the opening bell, and by that, I just didn’t mean the bout but from the very start. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Subject: Bloodied Pacquiao loses in 12
Author: Mark Stefen [Edit] |
Date Posted: 02:56:00 03/21/05 Mon Bloodied Pacquiao loses in 12 Morales beats Pinoy idol by unanimous decision By nick giongco LAS VEGAS—Erik Morales and Manny Pacquiao treated a crowd of 14,623 to an evening of fistic fireworks Saturday, but it was the Mexican’s superior style that made the big difference during their 12-round bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. When it was all over, Morales appeared very much like the winner of the scheduled 12-rounder with only minor welts to show off. Pacquiao, in contrast, had the look of one whose face had been ran over by a lawnmower. It was almost disfigured from the incessant blows of Morales who skillfully targeted a cut above the Filipino’s right eyebrow. All three judges, Paul Smith, Dave Morreti and Chuck Giampa, scored it 115-113. The Bulletin also had the same score. The loss was Pacquiao’s first since September 1999 when he was stopped by Medgoen 3K Battery in Thailand. Morales’ triumph also broke Pacquiao’s 15-fight win streak. He had two draws against Agapito Sanchez in 2001 and Juan Manuel Marquez last year. Pacquiao was clearly hampered by a nasty gash above the right eyebrow which he suffered in the fifth round. It was ruled a legitimate blow by referee Joe Cortez, but television replays showed that the wound was opened by an accidental clash of heads. Morales had his finest moments in rounds two, four, five, six, eight, ten and eleven as he peppered Pacquiao with jarring right straights, overhands and uppercuts, but it was the fifth frame that proved pivotal although credit must go to cutman Lenny de Jesus, who made it possible for the ring doctor to let the Filipino continue fighting. Pacquiao took the first round thanks to a spirited finish that had the crowd on its feet at the sound of the bell. But Morales found his range beginning the fourth round as he befuddled the Filipino southpaw with his excellent lateral movement. Pacquiao’s biggest round was the 12th when he came on the verge of knocking down his underdog rival following Morales’s decision to shift to lefty. As the final bell sounded, the huge crowd, made up of flag-waving Filipinos and Mexicans, were on their feet. According to Compubox stats, Morales threw a total of 714 punches and 265 landed for 37 percent, while Pacquiao loaded up with 894 and only 217 that landed for a measly 24 percent. Morales unloaded with 411 power punches and 159 connected for 41 percent, while Pacquiao fired 545 and only 183 made its target for 34 percent. There were 303 jabs thrown by Morales and 96 landed, while Pacquiao drilled in 349 and 34 only landed. At the post-fight news conference held at the media center, Morales admitted that Pacquiao was indeed tough, gutsy and hard-hitting. Morales said he was never in trouble despite absorbing some of Pacquiao’s best punches. Pacquiao blamed the gloves he was forced to use as contributing to his loss. They were softer and bigger, the kind he refused at first to wear but had to after his manager Murad Muhammad had agreed to to its use. "You can see it’s like cotton," said his trainer Freddie Roach during a post-fight interview, displaying the gloves. Morales said he felt he was in full control of the fight. "He was a tough guy. I hit him with everything,’’ Morales said. "I knew the guy was quick. I knew boxing would be the key because he was so fast.’’ It was the first fight at 58 kilograms (130 pounds) for Pacquiao, and Morales appeared to be both the bigger fighter and the bigger puncher. Pacquiao fought inside with flurries, but it was the right hand of Morales (48-2) that was the big punch in the fight. Still, Pacquiao landed effectively with both hands himself and he kept punching and coming forward and in the 12th round seemed to be landing the bigger punches. "It was a close fight with a lot of close rounds,’’ Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach said. ``Morales landed the bigger punches but Manny landed more combinations.’’ Neither fighter went down, but it wasn’t because of a lack of effort. They brawled at a relentless pace that brought back memories of Morales’ three fights with Marco Antonio Barrera. "I tried my best,’’ Pacquiao said. Morales kept his left jab on the cut over Pacquiao’s eye, but said he didn’t think the fight would be stopped. "I wasn’t focused on them stopping the fight,’’ he said. ``I wanted to punish him.’’ Pacquiao, wearing a dark pair of glasses, did not put the blame on anyone in his team when asked about his thoughts, but expressed his desire to make a comeback. "I will be back probably to fight in this division again," said Pacquiao, whose loss disappointed thousands of Fil-Americans and several countrymen who had flown here to give him support. This group was led by First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, several congressmen and governors plus a slew of other celebrities. –With reports from AP [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
Subject: Lessons not learned
Author: Mark Stefen [Edit] |
Date Posted: 02:54:58 03/21/05 Mon THE GAME OF MY LIFE By Bill Velasco The Philippine Star 03/21/2005 Manny Pacquiao’s loss may seem a big emotional blow for a people starving for heroes, but it also illustrates a point about how we prepare for major sporting competitions and similar events. It is a tribute to Pacquiao’s management team that he has ascended to the top echelons of his sport and profession. But there are stil some tricks that we haven’t learned. It is an unspoken understanding that professional boxing is probably the dirtiest sport in modern times, yet we still enter the fray in the hope that, with pure hearts and textbook procedures, we will prevail. Playing by the rules in foreign territory doesn’t work, especially in a sport that leaks loopholes like a sieve. What we need is a little black book of our own, and then some. Let’s give credit where credit is due first, though. Manny Pacquiao stood up to it all: public humiliation, bending the rules, ill-timed blood tests, head-butting, and much more, and came out with his dignity intact. However, the fact of the matter is that, in the WBC, Pacquiao is of the wrong ethnicity, and needed something extra to get him past Erik Morales. It is a sad fact that, when private sports associations are concerned, the odds will always be stacked against you. On the last day of the basketball competition of the Hiroshima Asian Games, our basketball team met an unpleasant surprise. Their bus driver, who spoke excellent English and knew the directions to the venue well, was replaced with a newcomer who spoke not one shred of English, and insisted on taking circuitous routes, passing by the site of the battle for third at least twice. By the time our team had approached the venue, it was almost game time. Imagine all these huge players trying to do their stretching in the confined aisle of a tourist bus. Team physician Dr. Jose Raul Canlas had to rush in and represent them in the team briefing. Needless to say, the tournament officials found in unusual that a normal-sized person was presenting himself as the team captain of a contending basketball nation. At the end of the day, because of the stress and lack of a proper warm-up (it was quite cold, as well), we came out flat, and lost. In the 1989 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, tennis officials were dictating the draw, insisting that the Philippines field a player who was sick. Other countries also walked out of the karate and table tennis competition. Our basketball team faced the unusual predicament of having the power turned off at the practice facility, and being told there was a brownout. Yet, when they went outside, all the lights were on. In the 1997 SEA Games in Changmai, Thailand, our women’s team was leading Malaysia (whom we had never beaten). An electrical surge caused the electronic scoreboard to shut off. When the power was restored, our score was missing one point. No matter how our officials argued the matter, the point had been lost. Fortunately, we prevailed in overtime. What to do? The best defense is isolation. Whenever we send athletes abroad, we sure have our own black book of dirty tricks that have been perpetrated against us in the past. To paraphrase the old cliche, those who do not know their history are condemned to being cheated. Buy your own water, cook your own food, hire your own driver. Take the phone off the hook at night, get your own security. Live in a bubble until the game or fight is over. * * * Incidentally, I don’t envy NBN in covering the SEA Games in November. They are treading where no other Philippine network has gone before. Not only with it stretch their resources to the limit, the coordination of schedules of events along will be a logistical nightmare. With the venues spread all over the Philippines, the big question will be how much is the government network going to spend in renting equipment to fully cover all the events for two weeks? Unlike in 1991, when all the events were concentrated in Metro Manila, this time, the games have been tossed far and wide, from all over Luzon to the Visayas. The first problem will be the cameras. If, for example, you need at least three cameras each for boxing, tennis, bowling, golf, billiards, and each of the martial arts (which are all in different places), where will all that equipment come from? Secondly, each production unit will require its own contingent of producers, writers, technical personnel, announcers, and so on. That probably represents the entire sports broadcasting industry of the Philippines. Lastly, how are all the events going to be funneled into one channel? [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 06:18:18 03/20/05 Sun Yes mga kapatid!!!! Jackie Pangilinan is ranked 16th in the 200 yards preliminary breastroke. She will be in action again in the evening for the Group B Finals. There were 40 swimmers who joined the preliminary, unfortunately Nicolette Teo of Singapore was not one of the preliminary swimmers. She probably did not qualify in this event. Nicollete may be a gold medal hopeful in the 100 meter breastroke comes SEA Games, but Jackie is already a sure gold medal winner for the 200 meter breastroke. With 8 months more to go, Jackie can possibly beat Nicolette at the 100 meter breastroke event if she focuses now her training at the 100 meter event. Congratulations Jackie!!!! In both men and woman golf event, two Filipinos made it to the draw list, but only 2 of them made the cut. At the TLC Classic in China, Angelo Que did not make the cut; while Frankie Minoza currently 7 holes away from the leaders Chawalit Plaphol of Thailand, Paul Casey of England, and Colin Montgomerie of Scotland. In Safeway International LPGA Tournament, Dorothy Delasin did not make the cut after firing +6 in the second round. Jennifer Rosales on the other hand, made the cut and is currently teeing for the third round of the tournament. In Football, Philippines was beaten by Indonesia in their last match yesterday at the Hassanal Bolkiah Cup ASEAN Under 21 Football Championship. Philippines never won a match after four games, but draw with Thailand. Philippines is now ranked last in the Group A Division, with Thailand and Malaysia in position of advancing to the semifinal round. Date Posted: 11:22:56 03/19/05 Sat Philippines' gold medal hope in 100 and 200 meter breastroke, Jackie Pangilinan, may have registered an impressive 1:04.00 time, but her 8 seconds improvement from her national record of 1:12.82 is not enough for Philippines to feel secure in getting this year's 100 meter breastroke medal since her SEA Games rival, Nicolette Teo of Singapore registered an impressive 1:02.73 record in the same event. Both ladies have just competed at the US NCAA Swimming Championship 100 meter breastroke yesterday in Indiana USA. Of the 52 Breastsrtoke swimmers, Jackie ranked 37th while Nicolette ranked 22nd. In the first 50 meters, Jackie registered :30.21 to Nicolettes :29.40. And she finished the remaining 50 meters in :33.71 seconds, to Nicolettes :33.19. Jackie's best time in the 100 meter breastroke is 1:03.65; still seconds away from Nicollete's registered best time. Tomorrow, both ladies will meet again at the 200 meter breastroke event. Let's see who will register the best time in this event. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Subject: Fifa chief Blatter eyes football renaissance in RP
Author: Belat ni Kumare [Edit] |
Date Posted: 03:53:25 03/19/05 Sat ZURICH, Switzerland--The president of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (Fifa) said they would try everything to revive the sport of soccer football in the Philippines. In a recent briefing here, Joseph S. Blatter, the Fifa president, said that 51 years ago the Philippines was one of the founding members of the Asian Football confederation and was prominent in the Asian football scene. "But because of the American influence, it became basketball [that is now the No. 1 sport in the country]," he said. Blatter said soccer football could still be revived in the Philippines. He cited the example of Panama which was a virtual non-entity in the football world. He said Panama recently defeated Mexico and qualified for a spot in the Youth Football Cup. Blatter said that now, "there is no sport so universal as football." For instance, he said, India has one billion people and "[almost] everybody there is kicking." "The game of soccer is the easiest to play and the easiest to understand," Blatter said. It is also the most important single sport in the world, he said. Blatter said that there are now six confederations and 205 football associations with more than 250 million players, of whom 40 million are women and girls. Exactly 99.8 percent are amateurs and only 0.2 percent are professional players. Eighty percent of the players, he said, are young people. Blatter said football "is now a good product. It has an audience of four billion people on TV." To bring football to the masses, the price of general admission to the World Cup in Barcelona has been brought down to 10 euros (702.34 pesos). "We are not making money on admission, we'll make money on TV," he said. He said that the Brazilian team, one of the strongest in the world, would play in Hong Kong to further promote the sport in Asia. The Brazilian team has won the World Cup five times; Italy and Germany, three times each; Argentina and Uruguay, twice each, and England and France, once each. Subject: Healthy Rosales matches par, trails leader by seven
Author: Mark Stefen [Edit] |
Date Posted: 03:51:27 03/19/05 Sat Getting a clean bill of health, Jenny Rosales changed her mind and suited up for the Safeway International, matching par 72 only to find herself down in 42nd place as the fancied names on the LPGA Tour, led by Lorena Ochoa of Mexico and Swede ace Annika Sorenstam, came through with under-par cards at the start of the $1.4 million event at the Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club course in Arizona Friday (Saturday in Manila). Rosales, who won the inaugural tournament for this year’s circuit in Mexico last month, played well and hit the ball solidly. But the 26-year-old shotmaker struggled on the sleek putting surface of the par-72 layout and settled for 72. "She felt good when she woke up that’s why she decided to play," said Bong Lopez, Rosales’ swing coach and adviser. "She played and hit the ball well, kaso wala lang talaga pumasok na birdie-putts. Ang dami nyang chances pero ayaw talaga." "Pero bukas sa tingin ko 5-under kami," added Lopez, who earlier said his ward was down with flu and was a doubtful starter in the event serving as a prelude to the tour’s first major — the Kraft Nabisco Championship — set next week at Rancho Mirage in California. "Sobrang bilis ng green kaya pag na-wrong side ka sa hole kahit malapit hindi mo ma-charge, laging padikit lang kasi nakakatakot pag lumagpas." Ochoa gained more of them, seven, in fact as she shared the first round lead with Siew-Ai Lim with a 65, one stroke ahead of the most fancied player in the fold — Sorenstam who had a 66 for joint third with veteran campaigner Juli Inkster Dante Navarro Philippine Star [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
Subject: Athletics gets P12-M more from San Mig

Date Posted: 03:50:01 03/19/05 Sat Athletics won’t have any reason to fail when the country hosts the 23rd Southeast Asian Games late this year. This after San Miguel Corp. gave track and field an additional P12 million that brought its training budget total to P18 million–the biggest among the 41 National Sports Associations competing in the biennial meet slated Nov. 27-Dec. 5 in key sites in Metro Manila, Luzon, Cebu and Bacolod. National training director Michael Keon yesterday made the announcement during the weekly "SCOOP sa Kamayan" in Padre Faura where he also announced the budget allotments of all 41 NSAs from the more than P160 million fund First Gentleman Mike Arroyo generated in a pledging session last January. Initially, athletics was alloted P6 million courtesy of the Philippine Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) expected to be utilized in funding the training of the athletes in either the United States or China where the country has a sports accord. The additional P6 million is just a chunk of what the food and beverage giant pledged to track and field, which amounts to P100 million. Thirteen other NSAs are also benefiting from San Miguel. Athletics chief Go Teng Kok, who also heads the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, said they’re using the additional amount not only for training but to purchase new equipment and for the coaches. "Hindi lang ata kami ang tumaas, pati ‘yung ibang NSAs din," said Go, who predicted to surpass its eight-gold medal haul in the 2003 Hanoi SEAG. "Siyempre masaya kami at malaking tulong ito sa amin." Date Posted: 01:40:24 03/09/05 Wed TALK about working fast. Just three hours after the press conference announcing Cebu’s bid to have the 23rd Southeast Asian Games (Seag) volleyball event staged here, the City got the nod from Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella. And we have Cebu Rep. Gwen Garcia to thank for it. Garcia was having dinner with Mandaue City Mayor Teddy Ouano and Mandaue City Sports Commission head Cheryl Ouano when she decided to call Philippine Sports Commission (POC) officer-in-charge Butch Ramirez about Cebu’s plan. Coincidentally, Puentevella was with Ramirez, so Garcia decided to talk to the congressman and personally ask him of Cebu’s bid. Luckily, she got a positive response. “I cannot say no,” Puentevella told Garcia. “In principle, we have it already because Monico has already said so, and we have to thank the political clout of the governor for it,” said Cebu City Sports Commission chief Jonathan Guardo, who was also at the dinner. Yesterday morning, Guardo, along with Cebu Volleyball Association (Ceva) president Glen Soco, Cebu Visitors and Convention Bureau (CVCB) chair Patrick Gregorio, said that they have written a letter to Philippine Seag Organizing Committee (Philsoc) Roberto Pagdanganan to have volleyball transferred to Cebu from Bacolod. However, with the initial nod by Puentevella, the letter is now moot. “What we have to do now is iron out the deal, whether they want something in return or we could give them sepak takraw,” Guardo said. “If we can have this, we will now have eight events in the SEA Games.” Guardo said that this would also address Bacolod’s problem with accommodation as they are reportedly having a tough time addressing the room requirements for the Seag. “We don’t have any problem because we have more than 3,000 rooms here,” Guardo said. Cebu will also host taekwondo, judo, dancesport, chess, karatedo, pencak silat, and sepak takraw. The plan to have the Seag volleyball transferred here started when officials of the Federacion Internacional Volleyball (Fivb) prodded local officials for it after a successful staging of the Men’s World Volleyball Championships First Round at the University of San Carlos Gym last week.
