Date Posted: 13:39:22 03/18/05 Fri

Fil-American tennis professional Cecil Mamiit has given his word that he will play for the Philippine national team in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games.

The 29-year-old Mamiit reportedly gave his commitment to Philippine Tennis Association president Col. Salvador Andrada when he flew into town last Saturday.

“He is going to play for the Philippines. Sigurado na ito, and for free,” said Andrada following their conversation before Mamiit went to practice at the Manila Polo Club in Makati City.

Mamiit, the highest-ranked Fil-Am professional at no. 229 in the Association of Tennis Professionals, came to town last weekend to prepare for an upcoming $75,000 tournament in Vietnam with Fil-Am partner Eric Taino.

His addition to the national squad would enable the Filipinos to repulse the Paradorn Srichapan-backed Thailand team.

Srichapan is the biggest threat to the Philippines’ tennis campaign with his ATP rank of no. 29.

The 5-foot- 8 Mamiit is one of two Filipinos doing well in the tennis pro circuit since 1996. His career took a big turnaround in 1999 when he upset seventh-seed Andre Agassi in an international event in San Jose, California with a score of 7-6, 7-6 in the Round-of-16.

Michael Chang was his next victim in the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, triumph.

He eventually lost the crown to Mark Philippousis, 3-6, 2-6, in the finals, which offered a $27,000 top purse.

Because of the three memorable encounters, his ranking rose to a high of 72 afterwards.

Andrada said his presence will give the national squad a chance of claiming four to five golds.

Mamiit’s career high-lights: 1996 — Won USTA no. 5 Satellite (59 points) and runner-up at USTA no. 6 Satellite (40 points)... Reached Challenger SF at Binghamton and Daytona... 1997 — Won first Tour match in Auckland (d. Steven)... Reached final at Urbana Challenger (l. to Richardson) and QF at three other Challengers... Advanced to first career Challenger doubles final in Dresden (w/Szymanski)... 1998 — Won back-to-back Futures titles at USTA no. 4 and no. 5 segments then followed with first Challenger title in Aptos (d. Suzuki) in July... Went on torrid Challenger run in November, reaching three consecutive finals, winning in Las Vegas (d. Ruah) and Burbank (d. Nainkin) sandwiched around a final in Rancho Mirage (l. to Ruud)... Moved from no. 239 to 132 after the effort... 1999 — Qualified for Australian Open and reached second round (l. to Kiefer)... Made big breakthrough three weeks later, reaching first career ATP final in San Jose (as a qualifier)... Defeated Carlsen, Agassi (default), Woodforde and then idol Chang before losing to Philippoussis... Advanced to QF in Delray Beach (l. to Grosjean)... In July, earned silver medal at Pan-American Games in Winnipeg, losing to friend and longtime rival Goldstein in final... Earned a career-high $171,000... 2000 — Advanced to Challenger finals at Granby (l. to Suzuki) and Rancho Mirage (l. to J. Blake)... 2001 — Finished in Top 100 in ATP Champions Race for first time... Equaled ATP-best by qualifying for six tournaments... Reached quarterfinals in Copenhagen and advanced to second rounds at the Australian Open and Roland Garros.

In an unprecedented development, Mandaue City will stage a world-class volleyball event with its hosting of the 2005 Asian Youth Girls Volleyball Tournament.

Mandaue City’s official hosting rights of the event, a competition for players aged 17 and under, which runs from May 24-31, was finalized yesterday after a meeting among Mandaue Sports Development executive director Cheryl Ouano, Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) developmental committee officer Ramon “Tats” Suzara, Asian Beach Volleyball Chairman Anthony Liao, Cebu Volleyball Associaition president Glenn Soco and Cebu Visitors and Convention Bureau (CVCB) president Patrick Gregorio.

“We are very happy to host the event,” said Ouano after a lengthy and detailed discussion with the FIVB on the event’s logistic and technical requirements. “This should be a big boost to Mandaue City’s sports and business departments.”

An extensive – and expensive – renovation program is already planned for the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex, which will be the venue of the blockbuster event. It will be subjected to an inspection by the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) on April 3.

Nine teams, including the Philippines and Asian powerhouses China, Japan, and Korea, are slated to take part in the event. Other teams are from India, Vietnam, Chinese-Taipei, Thailand and a non-Asian entry from Australia.

Subject: New quarters for RP athletes at Philsports

Date Posted: 03:58:25 03/18/05 Fri

THE FILIPINO athlete finally has a new home.

At least 30 rooms with air-conditioning units and new beds are being prepared inside an unused area in the Philsports in Pasig that will accommodate some 300 athletes living in the cramped Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

Philippine Sports Commission officer-in-charge Butch Ramirez yesterday announced that the athletes will transfer to their new quarters within two months following instructions by no less than President Macapagal-Arroyo.

Ramirez said the national athletes' new home will also have a first-class cafeteria being built to the tune of P1 million and that will serve food specified by the agency's nutritionists and dieticians.

"Finally, our athletes can move out of the 70-year-old Rizal Memorial which was not really intended to house the athletes," said Ramirez, who had earlier restored the monthly allowance of members of the national pool or the Class C athletes.

Ramirez had also raised the meal allowance of the 800-plus athletes from P250 to P350 a day.

"This is in line with the President's foremost instruction which is to 'love the athletes' because if they feel they are special they love you back and deliver," said Ramirez.

The PSC chief said the new athletes' quarters, which will be called the "Olympic Village of RP Athletes," used to be vacant office spaces near Brent School inside the PSC-controlled Philsports, now manned by PSC consultant Willy Roldan.

Some 300 members of the national pool now billeted in the dugout of the Rizal Stadium and its peripheral structures will relocate to the Philsports where there is less traffic congestion and pollution compared with the RMSC.

KENNIEVIC Asuncion and sister Kenny, who gave the Philippines a bronze medal in the mixed doubles two years ago, predictably headed the national badminton team chosen yesterday to compete in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games.

With Kennievic in the men's team are veterans Lloyd Escoses, Rodel Bartolome, Ian Piencenaves, Bogs Amahit, Jaime Junio, Melvin Llanes, Owen Lopez and Wally Fernandez.

Kenny will be joining hands with Irene Chiu, Karyn Velez, Alma Ledesma, Paula Obañana, Racquel Guerrero and Vanessa Tanco in the women's squad.

The team was formed following the recent national qualifying conducted by new head coach Martin Araneta, a former national player who carved a niche coaching private teams like the Ateneo Alumni and the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Araneta replaced Butch Oreta, who resigned due to differences with the Philippine Badminton Association.

Araneta refused to make any prediction although he expressed confidence in the mixed doubles team-up of the Asuncion siblings, who bagged the bronze during the Vietnam SEA Games two years ago.

The lineups of players seeing action in the other events will be known later according to Araneta, who said he's staying with the national team only for the duration of the SEA Games.

"I have no politics in me, and neither should the players," said Araneta during the team's initial practice session in ClubSixFifty in Libis area, Quezon City, where the Nationals played against six world-ranking Indonesian players.

Araneta, 34, also announced that he's inviting other Southeast Asian players to take a shot at the national players so they can get that "mini-SEA Games feeling."

The national mentor also dismissed speculations the country might field Indonesian players who have taken up residency here.

THE PHILIPPINE basketball team better be ready. The Koreans are coming. And not just them, but the Kuwaitis as well, and the Jordanians, the Qataris, the Syrians, the Japanese, the Iranians, and the Lebanese, who are defending champions in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup set May 29-June 5 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Graham Lim, secretary general of the Basketball Association of the Philippines, confirmed the arrival of the teams from these eight countries, adding Chinese-Taipei could be a 10th participant.

"Imports are allowed so we have to find two good ones we could use," said Lim, who met with PBA Commissioner Noli Eala two nights ago to hammer out details of the first international tournament scheduled for coach Chot Reyes’ national squad.

Twenty-one PBA players are in the current training pool and Reyes had said earlier that he will form the team before the first of two pocket tournaments set late this March and in early April.

A team from Russia, reinforced by four Americans, including a former PBA import, Stephen Smith, who played for Swift, is reportedly awaiting the green light for their departure for the Philippines next week.

"If we succeed in getting another foreign team for the pocket tournament, then it will be a go two weeks from now," said Eala two nights ago when he met with San Miguel Corporation president and chief operating officer Ramon S. Ang, who accepted an appointment to become RP team manager.

"If not, we may have to schedule back-to-back weekend pocket tournaments next month," said Eala.

Lebanon defeated Syria in last year’s Champions Cup final in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

Lim and Eala met with FIBA Asia marketing chief Hagop Khajirian, a Lebanese national, and discussed, among others, preparations for the Champions Cup, the sponsors, and the TV coverage.

LOS ANGELES —Every Manny Pacquiao fan and supporter has chipped in every little help they could give to ensure their hero’s success when he goes up against Mexican superstar Erik Morales on March 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV.

The Pacquiao bandwagon has never been this strong as Pacquiao’s superstar status has awakened nationalistic fervor among fellow Filipinos even as mainstream America has caught "Pacman fever."

Last Sunday, Pacquiao was blessed by the whole congregation of Christ the King church as Italian parish priest Rev. Fr. Antonio Cacciapuoti called him in front of the pulpit to lay hands on him in prayer.

The Catholic priest even gave Pacquiao a black rosary that was blessed by Pope John Paul II which the General Santos native promised to wear on fight night along with another one given by a Recollect priest from New York.

Last year, lawyer Richard Wilner promised to handle Pacquiao’s application for a green card, pro bono. Wilner also helped Pacquiao’s friends and other family members to get tourist visas even as hundreds of Filipinos led by the First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo will be coming from the Philippines just to watch him fight.

Dentist Ed De La Vega has volunteered his services, as he made the special made-to-fit mouthpiece Pacquiao will be using on fight night, something Pacquiao has never had in the past.

Well-meaning friends and volunteers including Joseph Jose, Pia Quejada, Joseph Ramos, Edward Lura and Greg Asuncion help in the day-to-day activities of Pacquiao, who is now tapering off from heavy training.

On Wednesday, Pacquiao visited the HBO offices in Irwindale, CA and signed autographs for employees who will be taking pay-per-view orders.

"It was so nice of you to come to our office. For sure, you will get our full support so that your fight with Erik Morales will be a box-office success," said one member of the telemarketing team.

Ordinary fans who have nothing much to offer have promised to pray for the victory of Pacquiao, the first Filipino athlete to perform under the pay-perview system.

Meanwhile, ticket sales to the Pacquiao-Morales encounter continued to dwindle even as all rooms at the MGM have reportedly been booked on March 19.

HBO pay-per-view officials also project that the fight dubbed "Coming With Everything" will surpass other pay-per-view fight gate receipts including the third of the Morales-Marco Antonio Barrera trilogy.

ATHENS OLYMPICS veteran Jackie Pangilinan, the country’s brightest hope to end an agonizing 14-year wait for a women’s swimming gold in the Southeast Asian Games, will represent Harvard University in the US NCAA swimming competitions in Indiana on March 17-19.

The 18-year-old Fil-Am will face potential gold rival Nicolette Teo of Singapore in the 100m and 200m breaststroke events.

Teo, the undisputed breaststroke queen of last SEAG, will carry the banner of the University of California-Los Angeles.

Pangilinan and Teo first met in the Olympics last year where the Filipino bet broke the RP 200m breaststroke mark and submitted a better time than the Singaporean bet.

Pangilinan and fellow Fil-Am JB Walsh are "shoo-ins’ in the national team set to compete in the Manila SEA Games late this year. —Noli CRUZ

A young blackbelter from Pinili, Ilocos Norte named Julius Cinco made waves in the US Open taekwondo championships recently by winning the Philippines’ lone gold medal at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

Fighting in the finweight class (up to 99 pounds), the 16-year-old Cinco crushed American Jensen Ishida with a reliable back leg 45 attack and a bullet roundhouse combination to win 6-2 in the finals.

RP team head coach Ricky Santiago Jr. described Cinco’s showing in his first ever international stint as "fantastic." "He was focused in all his bouts," said Santiago.

Cinco, who was sponsored by Ilocos Norte sports consultant Michael Keon, was introduced to taekwondo by his late teacher, Lilia Bautista, at Pinili National High four years ago and got his blackbelt under the tutelage of Roger Valdez.

A gold medalist in the recent Carlos Palanca Jr. all-blackbelt tournament, Cinco swept past two other Americans in the quarters and semifinals. He toppled Asher Greene, 4-2, in the semis.

Three other Filipinos — Czarina Cabuco of Laguna, John Ferdinand Bahoy of Las Piñas and Kimberly Mae Menchavez — won a medal each.

Cabuco took a silver in the junior women flyweight class, Bahoy earned a bronze in the junior men bantamweight tilt and Menchavez copped a bronze in the blackbelt poomse competition.

The other RP jins who competed in the US Open were Abegail Punzal of Burgos, Ilocos Norte; Zhara Jammie Velasco and Joseph Justin Pacquing of Las Piñas and Angelimark Barro of Dao, Pampanga.

Around P1.8 million is needed for the 40-strong Team Cebu City’s participation in the Arafura Games in Darwin City, Australia on May 14-21.

Jonathan Guardo, Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) chairman said yesterday.

Guardo was been selected by Philippine Sports Commission officer-in-charge William “Butch” Ramirez to head the Philippine delegation, which will include athletes and coaches from the National Capital Region, the cities of Mandaue, Dumaguete and Davao.

Guardo said each delegate needs to come up with P45,000 for the event expected to gather around 3,000 participants from around the world.

He said that the athletes must pay for the trip themselves since the City Government is on a very tight budget.

“Don’t expect financial assistance from the City because it’s financially in a tough situation. The CCSC’s budget has been appropriated for the pre-Southeast Asian Games tournaments, which could cost around P500,000 per sport,” Guardo said.

Team Cebu City will compete in six disciplines, including athletics, table tennis, lawn tennis, gymnastics, swimming and triathlon. The PSC, however, promised to sponsor three slots for boxing.

The team’s tentative line-up include Christy Sevilleno, Sandy Cahutay, Precilliano Capangpangan and Fe Banzon for athletics, Emmanuel Motel Jr., Jay Eribert Impuesto, Jude Ryan Gantuangko, Glendo Nayre, Sherry Lynn Gantuangko, Syvil Joren and Jessica Jawad-Honoridez for table tennis.

Also on the list are Dormilona Be, Jinky Yndig, Wilan Bacalla and Naomi Soco for gymnastics, Bohol’s Raul Zamar, Lorhiz Echavez, Mary Venice Aseniro, Dumaguete’s Zoe Emilea A. Mingueto and Karina Kamyl Villanueva, and Cebu City’s Rolando Alvarez for swimming.

The others are Jin Querubin, Reza Alesna, Joy Querubin, Carmelita Bala and Fritz Tabura for lawn tennis, and Dec Rowan Fernandez for triathlon.

Aside from Guardo, city officials will also accompany TCC, including Councilor Jack Jakosalem, Allan Torrevillas, and Danilo Villadolid, who will head the TCC delegation.

The coaches and trainers include Darlene dela Pisa and Aldrin Castañeda for gymnastics and Tito Bonillla and Manuel Fernandez for swimming.

AN OVERWEIGHT man signed up for a weight loss program complete with a personal trainer. It included a run each morning at 6.So when the doorbell rings the next morning, he’s ready. As he opens the door, he sees the most beautiful blonde he’s ever seen. Tall, well-endowed above a slim waist and long legs, she’s dressed in a pair of shorts that can barely contain her.

She smiles and says, “If you can catch me, you can kiss me” and starts off at a fast run.

This continues each morning. After three frustrating weeks, the man gets in shape and can almost keep up with her. One day he’s barely able to touch her shorts but can’t hang on. Tomorrow will be the big day. He barely sleeps that night.

The next morning, the bell rings. He runs to the door and throws it open.

There stands a huge burly woman, six-foot-five and 250 pounds. She’s muscled up like an ox and has a large wart amid her facial hair. She smiles and says, “I’m your new trainer. If I can catch you, I can kiss you!”

It's not only in pro basketball where Filipino-Foreigners are recruited to play for the Philippines.

With a huge task of winning the overall championship in the upcoming 23rd South East Asian Games which the country will host later this year, different sports governing bodies have started recruiting Filipino-Foreigners to beef up their respective national teams.

Volleyball is reportedly bringing in sisters Heidi and Hedder Ilustre who both played for the University of Hawaii to don the country's colors in the beach volleyball event. Two Fil-Am male players are also being eyed to reinforce the men's team.

Football, a sport where the country is not known for, is likely to field in back Fil-Brits Chad Gould and Chris Greatwrich who both played for the Philippines in the last Tiger Cup. Two other Fil-Foreigners are expected to suit up come SEAG. The women's team has also Fil-Foreigners in their line-up.

The women's basketball team is eyeing a 6 ft. 1 cager from California to reinforce the squad.

The women's tennis team is led by Fil-German teener Anja Vanessa Peter along with two other overseas-based Filipinas.

A number of Fil-Am athletes who saw action in last year's National Open are invited to be part of the National Athletics team.

Fil-Am swimmers Jackie Pangilinan and JB Walsh donned the country's colors at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Both are expected to swim for the Philippines in the upcoming SEAG.

An Indonesian national is reportedly suiting up for the Philippines in badminton but I think the plan has been disapproved.

There were also reports of Fil-Foreigners playing for the country in Lawn Bowls, Gymnastics, Triathlon and Wrestling.

Some Filipino-Foreign (Foreign-based) athletes who represented the Philippines in previous SEA Games were Akiko Thomson (Swimming), Edward Lasquete (Athletics), Dorothy Delasin (Golf), David Bunevacz (Athletics) and a male gymnast who won a gold in the rings event two years ago in Vietnam.

FOUR MEMBERS of the 2003 RP women’s basketball team that won the bronze medal in the Vietnam SEA Games plus a pair of comebacking campaigners will form the nucleus of this year’s RP squad in the coming 23rd edition of the biennial meet the country is hosting late this year.

Head coach Raymond Celis yesterday revealed that Shella Esteban, Ely Lizondra, Matilde Carreon and Marsha Faustino, all members of the RP five that wound up third in Vietnam Games, and veterans Charmaine Salalila and Enriquez of the 2001 selection are cinch to make it to this year’s squad.

The RP team, according to Celis, is hoping to duplicate the bronze medal finish by the RP team two years ago.

"What the team needs now are two centers, which we hope will be provided by Fil-Americans we are trying to recruit from southern California," Celis said during the SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session.

Celis added that tryouts are being conducted under the auspices of the Filipino community in Los Angeles for the purpose of beefing up his team.

"We still don’t know who will survive the tryouts but we already informed members of the Filipino community in the area what kind of players we need," said Celis adding that Chiqui dela Rosa, a players’ agent based in California, has assured him that at least two players, who stand 6-feet and above, are eager to play for the RP team.

Celis hopes to complete the final line up by the end of the month after which the team will undergo an extensive training, including playing in an international tournament under the sponsorship of San Miguel Corp.

"The team is scheduled to participate in a pre-SEA Games tournament this April. San Miguel, through the BAP, has also lined up several international tournaments, including one in Korea in June," Celis said.

Meanwhile, Samboy Lim, the newly appointed team manager of San Miguel Beer in the PBA, has joined former teammates Allan Caidic and Hector Calma and Alvin Patrimonio in offering his services to the team.

Lim, one of local basketball’s finest fast break receivers, said he can help by teaching Celis’ wards his expertise in transition game.

Earlier Caidic offered to teach the members of the team the proper way of shooting from three-point area, Calma on how to play the point guard position and Patrimonio on the post up play.

Celis said that tryouts for local talents are still going on daily at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum to fill in the vacuum left by nine former members of the 2003 squad who withdrew from the lineup.

Filomeno "Boy" Codinera, who accompanied Celis at the session along with assistant coach Shellalyn Gabagat, Esteban and Salalila, disclosed that many more players, including members of the UAAP champion Adamson University and those from the provinces will be joining the tryouts soon.

Celis said players from Ateneo and La Salle have signified their intention to join the tryouts but conflict of the schedules of practices of the nationals and their respective mother teams prevented them from doing so.

Asked whether it is true that Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco has directed the BAP to accept back the nine rebellious players, Codiñera said the BAP has yet to receive such order.

"If they are really hell bent on come backing, kailangan mag-tryout sila gaya ng iba. This is what the coaching staff has decided and we in the BAP will not stand on the way," Codiñera assured.

Esteban and Gabagat, for their parts, said that unlike those who boycotted the team, they are satisfied with the way Celis is handling their training regimen.

"Natural lang naman kasi na kapag nagbago ang coach, may babaguhing sistema. At saka bakit nila sasabihin inferior ang training system ni coach, eh nasa tryout phase pa lang kami at hindi pa talaga nagtre-training," Esteban exclaimed.

"Yung mga umalis, takot sa pagbabago. Eh kami hindi kami takot sa pagbabago, basta sa ikabubuti ng laro namin," Gabagat butted in.

PRESIDENT GLORIA Macapagal-Arroyo came to the rescue of the Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee (PHILSOC) yesterday as she pledged R300 million as the government’s contribution to the country’s hosting of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games this coming Nov. 27 to Dec. 5.

The president’s pledge was relayed by Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima during a meeting with Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco Jr., Bacolod City Rep. Monico Puentevella and Philippine Sports Commission officer-in-charge Butch Ramirez at the Dusit Hotel.

With this development, it is now believed that half of the R1 billion financial requirements for the Games has been met, counting the R100 million Philsoc chair Roberto "Obet" Pagdanganan was able to obtain from Globe Telecom and another R100 million counterpart promised by rival Smart Communications.

The pledge, somehow, brought smiles on the faces of sports officials, who have been looking for financial help the past few weeks to jumpstart preparations for the Games.

"It is now up to Philsoc to acquire the remaining amount from an ambitious marketing thrust it will soon launch," Puentevella said in a telephone interview before enplaning for Bacolod where he intended to rest for the weekend.

"Certainly, the amount pledged by the president somewhat made it easier for Philsoc to raise the needed funding. That is why I am personally thanking her for doing everything possible to save the Games," the Bacolod solon said.

Yesterday’s meeting with Purisima, arranged by Puentevella himself, was actually intended to seek clarification from the finance chief on the tax incentives the government is willing to dangle to all prospective sponsors.

"That is why we were all very happy hearing from the secretary the good news," Puentevella said, adding that among those present in the meeting included officials of the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

Cojuangco, who is also the Philsoc chair and ways and means committee chair, meanwhile, belied earlier reports that Smart has reneged from its sponsorship commitment.

"Manny Pangilinan is a very proud man and is really sincerely and honestly interested in helping sports . It is very unthinkable for him to withdraw from his commitment because of some problems that can easily be ironed out," he said during Friday’s Philsoc meeting.

"Of course, the reports were not true. Whoever is the source of the reports are only trying to destroy all the efforts we have so far been undertaken to ensure the success of the Games," he said.

Pagdanganan, for his part, also denied another report that the Malaysia–based Intersports Marketing group has, likewise, withdrawn as Philsoc’s marketing arm for international sponsorship.

"It’s just that the Feb. 28 deadline for ISM to come up with positive results had lapsed. But this doesn’t mean that it had withdrawn nor their contract had been nullified," Pagdanganan clarified.

"Ang naging epekto lamang nito ay kung anuman ang makuha nilang sponsorship, kailangan ipaalam muna sa Philsoc for proper studies and subsequent approval. Kung sa tingin namin ay hindi advantageous to us as host, we can look for another options," he explained.

LEE VAN Corteza escaped with two close victories to lead the cast in the winner’s bracket of the Asian 9-Ball qualifying tournament yesterday at Coronado Lanes in Makati City.

Corteza edged Troy Danao in the opener, 7-6, before submitting similar result against Romeo "Salamin" Del Rosario.

The top two finishers in the event, organized by Puyat Sports boss Aristeo Puyat and sanctioned by Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP), headed by Ernesto "Ernie" Fajardo, will join seeded players Efren "Bata" Reyes, Francisco "Django" Bustamante and Gandy Valle in the second leg of the Tour slated next month in Jakarta, Indonesia.

"Pipilitin ko na mag–qualify sa Jakarta para mabawi ko ‘yung masamang performance ko sa first leg," said Corteza, who lost to eventual champion Valle in the quarterfinals of the Singapore leg.

The other undefeated players in the two-day event, managed by Ish Caparas, were Russian Petiza and Roberto Gomez.

Petiza trounced Jerome Pena, 7-4, and nipped Eric Sandoval, 7-6, while Gomez made short work of Luis Saberdo, 7-3, and Johnson Vita, 7-2.

Meanwhile, Marian Basas stunned top seed Irish Rañola, 9-6, to rule the second leg of the women’s national try-out Sunday at the Coronado Lanes in Makati City.

With the win, Basas raced past first leg winner Rubilen Amit in the overall classification with 120 points.

Amit, who dropped a 5-9 decision to Rañola in the third round, has a 100–point total after two legs.

Basas, the losing finalist in the first leg, earlier beat Yvette Torres, 9-0, Glady Idioma, 9-6, Grace Donceras, 9-2, and Magda Say, 9-6.

The two-day event organized by billiards godfather Aristeo Puyat of Puyat Sports and sanctioned by BSCP, headed by Ernesto "Ernie" Fajardo, will determine the line-up of the national women’s billiards team to this year’s Southeast Asian Games.

Rounding up the top six were Say (80 points) Rañola (70 points) Jhoanna Dee (60 points) and Toni Anne Nobleza (60 points).

LOS ANGELES, California, United States of America -- Trainer Freddie Roach said Manny Pacquiao's newly minted right hook, labeled as Manila Ice, will knock out Erik Morales but Pacquiao's sparmates yesterday disagreed and swore the blazing left hand will do the job.

"If Manny hits him with that big left, it's gonna be over," testified Jose Sta. Cruz, a rangy, undefeated (18-0) lightweight who got banged by Pacquiao for three furious rounds before a second sparmate was called in yesterday.

Sta. Cruz, who had tagged Pacquiao with jarring head shots in a previous sparring, said the RP boxing hero has a tremendous chance of winning.

"He's in great shape really, he has great power, speed, everything," Sta. Cruz said after Pacquiao flashed his full worth yesterday.

Sta. Cruz, as tall as Morales, fights at 135 pounds but weighed 142 pounds for yesterday's sparring against Pacquiao who checked in at 129.

"He just keeps getting stronger, he keeps on improving," said Sugar Ray Beltran, the second Pacquiao sparmate.

man, he's a stronger puncher, a terrific left, better than ever, I'm gonna put my money on him," Beltran added.

Yesterday's speed and power demonstration by Pacquiao was a big leap from his sluggish session before the Mexican media on Tuesday when he obviously pulled his punches.

After the well-applauded sparring, Roach said Pacquiao is ready to go for a knockout.

Roach said he would appreciate it if Morales comes in at over 140 pounds for the fight, because that would make the Mexican easier to catch.

Pacquiao said he would win but refused to state whether it would be by points or stoppage.

"I have to do my very best for my countrymen who are all praying for me," Pacquiao told a television reporter.

General Santos City mayor Pedro Acharon witnessed yesterday's workout and expressed confidence that Pacquiao would win by knockout.

Many other Pacquiao backers, led by First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, are expected at ringside in Las Vegas for the March 19 showdown.

Pacquiao's wife, Jinkee, is expected to join the world boxing celebrity Sunday at his new quarters at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street.

Pacquiao drives to Las Vegas in a convoy on Monday, the same day Morales is expected in the gambling capital.

THE FIRST Filipino Olympic triathlete could roll out of the assembly plant in Subic nine weeks from now.

Accepted as an Olympic sport during the 2000 Sydney Games (with taekwondo) after a 13-year campaign, triathlon, divided into three events — the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run — could be the ticket to the 2008 Beijing Olympiad for at least one of four young talents in the stable of the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP).

Lea Coline Langit, 18, Mimi Lucas, 15, Alexandra Ganzon, 18, and Miki Quilala, 16, are competing in the Asian Olympic Development trials from May 9-19 in Subic, hoping to whip up a worthy performance and land a spot in the AOD squad which would undergo extensive training in preparation for Beijing.

"Six to ten triathletes will be chosen," says TRAP president Tom Carrasco.

Designed to "increase the number of Asian participants in triathlon, and to ensure the continuous growth and development of the sport as part of the Olympic program," the Subic competition is expected to bring in triathletes from 10-12 Asian countries, all members of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).

Australian Brett Mace, India’s national triathlon coach from 2003-2005, will oversee the event in his capacity as sports development official for Asia of the International Triathlon Union.

Half of the cost of sponsoring a member of the development squad, the total of which could come up to $50,000 a year, says Carrasco, will be shouldered by the ITU and the other half by the athlete’s mother federation.

"Just to be able to send one Filipino triathlete to the Olympics would be an achievement," Carrasco adds. "And all four have strong potentials to make it to the development squad."

Of the 44 member countries of the OCA, four — Japan, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, and China, all of which had bets in last year’s Olympic Games in Athens, need not send nominees to the development camp.

FROM all indications, the next Olympic gold medal might come from a world-class Filipino gymnast .

Roel Ramirez, a Physical Education student from the University of the East, won a silver medal in the recent American Cup, a World Cup Category A tournament participated by top gymnasts from all over the world, which was held on Feb. 21-25 at the Nassau Veterans Coliseum in Long Island, New York.

The 21-year-old Ramirez, a gold medalist in the Vietnam SEA Games two years ago, posted a score of 9.312 in the vault event of men’s artistic gymnastics (MAG), or a mere 0.144 points behind the eventual gold winner Jeffrey Wammes of The Netherlands.

The 20-year-old Wammes, who also won the gold in the floor exercise, scored 9.456 to take the gold, while Luis Rivera of Puerto Rico took the bronze after accumulating 9.200 points.

"Sayang. Akala ko bandera na natin ang maitataas sa event ni Roel. Pero masaya na rin ako dahil we were able to prove na kayang makipagsabayan ng mga Filipino gymnasts sa iba pang world-class athletes," said coach Sonny Ty, who accompanied the five-man strong delegation, together with his assistant, Robin Padiz and head of delegation and US-based team manager Johnny Valdez.

Ramirez’s feat was doubly significant since practically all the world’s top gymnasts from powerhouse countries such as China, Albania, Canada, Mexico, USA, Japan, Latvia, Venezuela, Czechoslovakia, Australia, Croatia, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands, Spain, France, Hungary, Finland and Venezuela took part in the event.

Also in the lean RP team were Al and Ronnie Ramirez, Brydon Sy and Tammy de Guzman, the lone lady participant from the country. They, however, failed to advance past the preliminary round

Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) president Noel Buenaventura said with this development, Ramirez looms to be the country’s top gold medal prospect in his events in the 2005 SEA Games slated late this year.

"Kung kaya niyang talunin ang mga kalaban niyang world-class athletes sa American Cup, there’s no reason why he can’t win the gold in the SEAG. I think he’ll be unbeatable in his events come November," Buenaventura said.

Cebuano artists to do work for Hollywood
By Jessica Banzon-Natad
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

The world will soon witness the ingenuity of Cebuanos in future cinema standees, DVD tower casings and website content for movies of Hollywood movie production companies.

According to Versagrafx Designs Philippines Inc. president Larry Collins, Cebuano artists will be behind the upcoming products of his company in the Versagraphic Design group.

“Our office will be at the forefront of our company. The conceptual designs for the promotion collaterals of movies in Hollywood will be made by artists here in Cebu. Their works will be exported to our company in the US (United States) for execution,” he said on the sidelines of the opening of Versagrafx at the Asiatown Information Technology (IT) Park last Monday.

Collins said Versa-graphic Design Group initially invested $350,000 to set up the office at Asiatown and acquire the needed equipment, such as computers and servers.

He said the Cebu office is the group’s first branch outside of the US.

If business is good, the company plans to buy a lot in Asiatown and construct its own building after a year or two.

During the opening, Cebu Investment Promotions Center (CIPC) managing director Joel Mari Yu brought up the complaint by local software developers about the pirating of their Cebuano artists by foreign companies.

“They told me to stop promoting Cebu because large companies are pirating their talents. But that is life. There is no stopping development,” he said.

Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza) Director General Lilia de Lima urged the officers of Versagrafx to tell their friends and business associates in their respective countries about the “many good things found in the Philippines.”

Collins discovered the capability of Cebuano talents during one of his visits as a tourist in Cebu.

“My love for scuba diving brought me to Cebu. When I came here, I was surprised to see the talents of the people and the very warm culture of the Cebuanos,” he said.

Collins said the ability of the Cebuanos to speak English and the good pool of designers in the area are two of the factors that made him decide to expand to Cebu.

The other factors include the low cost of doing business in the country and the time difference between the US and the Philippines.

“The time difference between our countries will enable the company to operate 24 hours. By the time our office in the US closes, our office in the Philippines also opens,” he said.

Collins said the company’s designing process will involve a review of cinematographic materials and on-location shoots and still photographs to be used in the conceptualization and design.

The finished products will be the visual and construction designs of the cinema standees, DVD tower casings in electronic files and the movie Web-page designs.

These will be used for the manufacture of cinema standees, which are the promotional materials for movies placed at cinema entrances and DVD retailers.

The target market of the project will be Hollywood movie production companies, such as MGM, Universal Studios, Warner Bros. and Columbia Tristar.

“The company’s strength lies in the long and satisfying working relationship between its American investors and Hollywood movie producers,” Collins said.

Subject: GANDY VALLE of PHILIPPINES Wins Singapore Leg

Singapore, 6 March... In the end, the new one outplayed the young one.

Gandy Valle of the Philippines defeated 16-year old Wu Chia Ching of Chinese Taipei, 11 – 9, late Sunday evening to capture the inaugural leg of the 2005 San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour at the Suntec Exhibition Hall 404.

Valle, who made his maiden appearance in Asia’s premier 9-Ball tournament, rallied from a 6 – 4 deficit and won seven of the last nine racks en route to topping the competition and claiming the US $10,000 top prize.

"I was so nervous. I didn’t feel I had the victory in my hands until the 9 ball finally dropped," revealed Valle, a gold medalist in the 9-Ball doubles competition during the 1998 Asian Games.

A native of Davao City in the Philippines, the 31-year old Valle also said that he dedicated his victory to God, his wife and 2-year son Ralph and the Filipinos who enthusiastically supported him at the venue.

Wu, whose previous best finish was a quarter-final appearance in last year’s Manila leg, paid dearly when his break on 17th rack failed to drop any balls. Valle then capitalized as he took two straight racks to seize the upper hand, 10 – 8.

The Taiwanese teenager managed to close the gap as he made it 10 – 9, but Valle didn’t let his foe get any closer as he finished the job in the 20th rack. Wu settled for the runner-up prize of US $5,000.

Despite his victory, Valle had high praises for his opponent. "He’s very young, but he’s so talented. He has a bright future ahead of him," expressed Valle.

Valle reached the finals after disposing Taiwanese Yang Ching Shun, 11 – 8, in the semi-finals, while Wu edged Filipino Antonio Gabica, 12 – 10.

After Singapore, the next stops of the 9-ball tour will be Jakarta, Kaohsiung and Manila. The top 10 players on the Tour Order of Merit qualify into the World Professional Pool Championships.

The San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour is sanctioned by the Asian Pocket Billiard Union and organized by ESPN STAR Sports’ Event Management Group (EMG). San Miguel Beer is the title sponsor for the Tour. Iwan Simonis and Aramith supply the official tablecloth and official balls respectively. Brunswick Metro is the official pool table and the Marina Mandarin is the official hotel, Suntec Singapore is the official venue. STAR Sports is the official broadcaster. The 2005 Tour will go to Singapore, Jakarta, Kaohsiung and Manila. Besides the total prize money of US$200,000, the top 10 players on the Tour Order of Merit every year will directly qualify into the World Professional Pool Championships.

Sa volleyball, nilampaso ng Indonesia ang Philippines in three straight sets. So wala ng chance ang Philippines to advance to the Asian round in Bangkok.

Sa tennis, natalo ang pair ng Philippines against Korea. So ang standing ngayon ay Philippines 1 and Korea 2. Philippines has to win all singles game tomorrow (2 games) to advance to the second round in Davis Cup. Or they will end up playing with another country for the loosers group. then pag natalo ulit sa loosers group, relegated na ang Philippines to Group 3 Next year.

Sa 9-ball billiards naman, natalo si Efren Bata at saka si Bustamante. Natalo si Bata sa fellow Filipino na si Gabica, pero si Gabica natalo sa semifinals. Si Gandy Valle naman na isang pinoy ay nag advance sa semifinals, he is still playing as of press time. Sya na lang pag-asa ng pinoy sa 9ball tournament sa Singapore.

Winning in Asia's premiere 9-ball tour is fast becoming a habit for Efren "Bata" Reyes.

In contrast, Francisco "Django" Bustamante is on a slump since the event's inception two years ago.

Bustamante, fresh off his victory in the P1-million Hope All-Filipino Open, sets out to end his string of setbacks while Reyes, who won five of the tournament's last eight legs, tries to sustain his momentum when the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour 2005 starts today at the Suntec Exhibition Hall here.

The top seed in the 32-player field from 12 Asian countries, Reyes takes on Thailand's Wanshana Poomjaeng in the preliminary round of the event which offers a $10,000 champion's purse.

"Everybody has equal chances of winning this leg," said Reyes, who rated the Taiwanese and his fellow Filipinos as his toughest opponents.

Aside from capturing one of the legs in this island-state last year, Reyes went on to win three of the five stops of the tour which serves as the qualifier for the World 9-Ball Championships.

Reyes also topped the Ho Chi Minh and Taipei legs of the event, where the tour's top 10 finishers advance to the World Championships slated in Taiwan in July.

The second-ranked Bustamante faces little-known Lin Didi of China in the first round. Fellow Filipinos Lee Vann Corteza and Gandy Valle are paired with lesser-known rivals -- Muhamad Junarto of Indonesia and Au Siu-Wai of Hong Kong, respectively, while Antonio Gabica meets Japan's Kunihiko Takahashi.

"Winning a leg has been quite elusive for me in the past," said Bustamante, who lost in last year's Manila stop to Corteza. "I guess it's about time I change the outcome."

Now on its third year, the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour offers a total prize of $50,000 for each leg. Jakarta will host the next stop on April 1-3 followed by Kaohsiung on April 29-May 1 and Manila on June 3-5.

Aside from Reyes and Bustamante, other cue masters expected to challenge for the crown are 2000 world champion Chao Fong-pang of Chinese-Taipei, 2004 Taipei leg first runner-up Jeong Young-hwa of South Korea and 16-year-old Taiwanese sensation Wu Chia-ching.

ALL EYES will be on Patrick John Tierro when he tries to give the Philippines a head start against tough South Korea today in the Asia-Oceania Zone Group II Davis Cup tie at the Philippine Columbian Association courts at Plaza Dilao in Paco, Manila.

The 19-year-old six-footer gets his biggest assignment in his third Davis Cup stint against Suk Hyun-joon in the opening singles at 10 a.m.

"I'm excited and a little nervous, but ready to play my game,'' said Tierro, son of a retired US Navyman from Olongapo City.

Johnny Arcilla, the country's No. 1, clashes with Jun Woong-sun, ranked 713 in the world, in the second singles.

International Tennis Federation representative and Davis Cup referee Denis Overberg of Australia presided over the draw yesterday at the PCA.

Also present were Philippine Sports Commission officer-in-charge Butch Ramirez, International Olympic Committee representative Frank Elizalde, Philta president Buddy Andrada, Davis Cup administrator Ajay Pathak, Philta executive vice-president Manuel Misa, South Korean coach Yoon Yong-il and non-playing captain Ro Gap-taik.

Tierro, a product of the Subic Bay Tennis Academy, finally got to play in his second Davis Cup last year, beating Hong Kong's No. 1 player in a reverse singles as the Philippines won the tie, 5-0.

But Korea is a different story altogether.

The Philippines, according to Pathak, hasn't beaten Korea in the Davis Cup since the '80s.

A team led by Ody Gabriel bowed to the Koreans at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts in 1984. The result was also the same in 1988 and 1990.

The status of Korea's Chuk Hee-seok, winner of the last two PCA Opens, remains uncertain due to a shoulder injury.

Chuk, who drubbed Arcilla in the 2003 and 2004 PCA Open finals, is slated to play in the doubles with Kim Dong-hyun tomorrow against Rolando Ruel and Johnny Victorino.

Surprisingly, the Korean hasn't included Kim Sun-yong in their initial list. Kim, who is with the team here, is the world's No. 2 junior player and the other member of last year's Australian Open juniors doubles champion team.

Subject: South Korea pulls out top player in Davis Cup match

THE PHILIPPINES got an unexpected Davis Cup bonus yesterday when the visiting South Korean squad pulled out world No. 574 Hee-Seok Chung and Australian Open juniors runner-up Sun Yong Kim from the singles competitions in their Asia-Oceania Zone Group II first round tie.

This development, however, puzzled the Philippine squad no end as South Korean non-playing captain Gap-Taik Ro nominated Woong-Sun Jun and Hyun-Joon Suk as their singles players.

The opening singles matches will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Philippine Columbian Association in Plaza Dilao, Paco, Manila.

"The action by the Koreans puzzled us more than being relieved with the pulling out Chung and Kim from the singles," offered Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) president and Asian Tennis Federation head Buddy Andrada after yesterday’s draw.

"Our boys have not played against Jun and Suk in the past and they are now wondering how they will play against them," added Andrada after top RP netter Patrick John Tierro and Johnny Arcilla were drawn to battle Suk and Jun, respectively, in today’s matches.

Andrada’s assessment was echoed by RP manager Jean Henri Lhuillier, non-playing captain Johnny Jose and coach Martin Misa, who said that the development was both good and bad for the Filipinos.

"We had a good draw with Chung and Kim out of the picture. The odds against us were somewhat lessened with their absence," Misa said. "But we’d like to assume that Suk and Jun will have big surprises for us. South Korean players are always dangerous and we have to treat our rivals as very dangerous."

And while the Filipinos were left wondering after the draw, Ro bared that Chung is very tired and stopped short of saying that the 28-year-old Chung, the reigning PCA Open champion who mangled Arcilla, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, in the finals last October, is injured.

About his singles players, Ro said that all of them will be playing their first Davis Cup matches and that the 18-year-old Jun is ranked No. 713 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and Suk is No. 1100.

Ro added that Chung, who was nominated to play in tomorrow’s doubles with Dong-Hyung Kim against Rolando Ruel Jr. and Joseph Victorino will also be replaced before the match.

The reverse singles of the tie will be played on Sunday with Tierro, now the country’s No. 1 campaigner with his 4 ATP points and world 1133 ranking, facing Jun and Arcilla battling Suk.

The Philippines and South Korea have met seven times in the past when the two nations were still in Group I. The Koreans hold a 4-3 edge in their-head-to-head duel.

The winner of this tie will face the winner between Lebanon and Pacific Oceania which will also be played starting today in Pacific Oceania. The loser, on the other hand, will face the loser of the Lebanon-Oceania tie for the right to stay in group II next year.

TWO FILIPINO-American players are being asked to reinforce the Philippine women’s basketball team being formed for the Southeast Asian Games this year.

National coach Raymund Celis did not name the players – both standing above six feet – pending the completion of negotiations between the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) and Los Angeles-based agent Chiqui dela Rosa.

Both players are fixtures in the Southern California collegiate league and have expressed keen interest to play for the Philippines.

"Should we succeed in getting the two, our team will definitely be stronger and our chance of winning a medal will be brighter," said Celis who has sought the help of San Miguel sports director Robert Non and Hector Calma, project director for men’s and women’s basketball.

Acquiring the services of Fil-Ams campaigners was one of several concessions Celis was able to get from San Miguel in the hope of filling in the vacuum left by 10 veteran internationalists who pulled out of the team.

SMC president Ramon Ang, through the intercession of First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, has agreed to send the nationals to Xiamen, China to train for one month.

Former PBA stars Allan Caidic, Alvin Patrimonio and Calma have also offered their assistance in the team’s preparations.

"Malaki ang maitutulong nilang tatlo para sa aming preparasyon at ngayon pa lang ay nagpapasalamat ako sa kanila, kay Mr. Ang at sa San Miguel sa kanilang tulong," Celis said.

Celis has been scouring the countryside in search for talents. At least two – one from University of Mindanao in Davao City and the other from University of San Agustin in Iloilo, would be sent to Manila to join the daily try-outs.

Twenty-one players based in Metro Manila are currently attending the tryouts at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum. While Celis is away, his assistants – Shiela Gabagat and Bernie David – are overseeing the tryouts.

Taiwanese halt Pinoy spikers; Indons win
By Joey Villar
The Philippine Star 03/04/2005

CEBU CITY — Host Philippines got a taste of Chinese Taipei’s awesome firepower as it dropped a 21-25, 14-25, 20-25 result last night but still remained in the thick of things in the FIVB World Championship qualifier at the packed University of San Carlos Gym here.

A day after smashing Macau in straight sets, the Nationals ran into a taller and more athletic Taiwanese bunch tipped to rule this five-day meet staking two berths in the next round.

At first though, Chinese Taipei, ranked 36th in the world and a semifinalist in last year’s East Asian Games, appeared sluggish as RP showed enough grit and resolve but the former still managed to take the first set, 25-21.

Six times the Filipinos, who are using this tournament as a build-up for the 23rd Southeast Asian Games in the country late this year, led by two points — the last at 8-6 — but the Taiwanese unleashed their power game anew to dominate the second set.

Egged on by some 4,000 fans, the Vip Isada-mentored RP side managed to check Taiwan’s attacking game with a rock solid net defense as it seized a 16-4 lead in the third set.

It turned out to be the Filipinos’ last show of resistance as Lin Hsien Chen and Lien Chien Chih, who combined for 30 hits including 26 on spikes, delivered the telling blows and sealed the Taiwanese’s first win that lasted a little over an hour.

In the other game, Indonesia also sent warning signals to regional rival Philippines as it slammed newcomer Tonga, 25-15, 25-19, 25-14.

Bannered by veterans of the gold medal winning team in the 2003 Hanoi Southeast Asian Games, the Indonesians overpowered the Tongans up front with 43 kills that enhanced their bid of clinching one of the two berths in the next round.

Rizqon Aris Achmad, I Nyoman Rudi Tirtani and Joni Sugiyanto, who are all expected to return here late this year to defend their SEAG title, provided the ammunition by combining for 35 hits including 30 on kills in a win that impressed their coach.

"We worked on our attacking game well even though we don’t have an idea how Tonga plays. I think we played a good game," said Indonesia’s Chinese coach Li Quijiang.

Meanwhile, Macau dealt Tonga its second loss in as many outings while posting its first win via a 29-27, 25020, 25-21 win yesterday.

The Indonesians were so dominating that it took them only 55 minutes to dispose of Tonga, Paul Asi Taulava’s native country, that should give the host team something to think about.

WITH OVER two weeks to go before their much-awaited head-on collision in Las Vegas, tickets for their fight are selling as if they are on sale, promoter Bob Arum disclosed yesterday.

"The fight is on fire," Arum said, referring to the March 19 super-featherweight brawl between Mexican Erik Morales and Filipino Manny Pacquiao at the 15,000-seat MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Arum said all 2,800 tickets priced at $75 have already been sold and the number of available tickets pegged at $400, $300, $200 and $125 are beginning to dwindle as interest in the megabuck bout intensifies going into the final two weeks.

As of yesterday, 10,000 seats have already been taken and it is expected that by fight week, there won’t be a single ticket left to buy.

When Pacquiao fought there last year against Juan Manuel Marquez, over 10,000 fans carrying banners and streamers jammed the arena. This fight, however, was not on HBO Pay-Per-View.

Pacquiao said political bigwigs like Sen. Lito Lapid, Davao mayor Rodrigo Duterte, General Santos City mayor Pedro Acharon, North Cotabato Gov. Manny Piñol as well as actor and boxing enthusiast Robin Padilla are heading for Las Vegas as their way of showing their support to the Filipino boxing icon.

HBO PPV is beaming the fight to US households for a price of $44.95.

Arum, whose promotional firm Top Rank is staging the show alongside Murad Muhammad’s M&M Sports, said there is a strong possibility that a record will be set for PPV buys for a fight in the lower-weight categories.

Meanwhile, Manila–based members of Pacquiao’s entourage — Lito Mondejar, Ramon Lainez and Gerry Garcia — are heading to Los Angeles on March 10, while th power–punching lefty’s wife, Jinkee, will follow on March 13.

Team Pacquiao leaves for Las Vegas by land on March 14 from Los Angeles, the same day Morales’s party is arriving in the gambling haven straight from Mexico City where he currently trains.

Las Vegas oddsmakers have installed Pacquiao as the slight favorite although he will be fighting for the first time in the 130-lb category, having previously fought as a flyweight, super-bantam and then as featherweight.— Nick GIONGCO

Date Posted: 03:50:31 03/03/05 Thu

THE LOGISTICAL work for the Manila 2005 Southeast Asian Games is now falling into place.

The Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Philsoc) announced yesterday that the venues for the 395 events in 41 sports "have all been roughly decided."

The opening ceremonies, scheduled on Nov. 27, will be held at the Rizal Park while venues for five other sports have been moved.

"We have no more time to build a stadium that has a seating capacity of at least 4,000 for the opening ceremonies," explained Philsoc chair Roberto “Obet” Pagdanganan. "But it's also a chance for the audience to enjoy the Manila sunset."

The elimination, semifinals and finals of men's basketball will now be held at the Makati Coliseum. Canoeing and kayaking have been moved to the La Mesa Dam in Quezon City.

Gymnastics will be held at the jai-alai fronton in front of the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, wushu will be played at the Emilio Aguinaldo College and the criterium event has been moved to the Luneta Park.

"We had two main criteria for the venues," said Pagdanganan. "These venues should meet the international-quality standard. And second, the venues won't be needing a lot of money for renovations."

Bacolod, one of two provincial hosts in the Visayas region, has also finalized the venues of four sports.

Boxing will be held at the La Salle-Bacolod gymnasium, weightlifting at the Bacolod Convention Plaza, men's football at the Panaad Stadium, beach volleyball at the La Salle Community Center, and indoor volleyball at the Negros Occidental Activity Center.

Several Luzon provinces have also been tapped as host. Swimming and diving will be in Los Baños, Laguna; equestrian in Lipa City; water sports in Subic; and petanque and lawn bowling in Clark Field, Pampanga.

"It's a great opportunity to showcase our country," said Pagdanganan.

Philippine Sports Commission officer-in-charge Butch Ramirez has also been overseeing the renovations at the Rizal Memorial Complex in Manila, including the track and field oval and the baseball field.

No games will be held in Mindanao, but Pagdanganan clarified that Philsoc did not intentionally leave out the region.

The security issues in Mindanao, notwithstanding, Pagdanganan revealed that Philsoc checked out several provinces including Davao and Lanao del Norte. But none met the Philsoc's requirements.

THE GOVERNMENT'S three television networks -- channels 4, 9 and 13 -- have been tapped to bring the drama, action and highlights of the Southeast Asian Games to viewers across the country from Nov. 27 to Dec. 5.

"If we had the budget, of course, we'll go to the highest-rating station," said Peter Cura, marketing committee chair of the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Philsoc). "But we're hoping that with the combined audience of these channels, we'll also reach a lot of viewers."

While GMA-7 and ABS-CBN will not be covering the Games as extensively as the three government stations, the two broadcast giants are expected to carry major highlights of the Philippine campaign in its third hosting of the Games.

Cura also announced that Asian corporate giants Nestlé, Samsung and Yonex are being tapped in Philsoc's bid to meet the Games' budget of between P850 and P900 million.

"We're adopting a less-is-more strategy," said Cura, who's also the chief executive officer of advertising agency Corplan Inc. "We're talking to less people but asking for more money."

Several deals with private sponsors are also being worked out by Philsoc chair Roberto Pagdanganan and vice chair and Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco.

"Don't be surprised to see erstwhile marketing competitors joining together," said Pagdanganan. "Major sponsors have been highly supportive of the appeal made by Philsoc that this should be a national undertaking."

Philsoc will formally present the event sponsors on March 15 and launch the event's logo, mascot and theme song, which is being worked on by singer Jose Mari Chan and lyricist Rene Nieva.

On Tuesday, San Miguel Corp., which already pledged P100 million, hosted a pep rally for the national athletes in 14 sports at the SMC head office complex in Mandaluyong. Jasmine W. Payo

THE PHILIPPINE Basketball Association’s first official out–of–the country game is making a lot of noise at the Indonesian capital with organizers hoping to score a box office hit.

"Just about every basketball fan in the city is going gaga about the coming weekend match," said Agus Mauro, Indonesia Basketball League commissioner and organizer of the event.

"This early tickets for the games are already sold-out. In fact, the fans can’t wait any longer for the game to begin," said Mauro.

The game in Jakarta marks the first time in the league’s 30-year history that an official game will be held outside of the Philippine soil and the honor went to the Shell Turbo Chargers and the Talk ’N Text Phone Pals, two teams that made strong statements in the Philippine Cup.

The lone encounter, serving as the two teams’ debut in the league’s Fiesta Conference, is scheduled on Sunday at the modernized Britama Sports Mall at 6:45 p.m. (7:45 p.m. Manila Time).

PBA commissioner Noli Eala expressed elation on the warm reception the PBA delegation is getting this early and promised PBA fans in Jakarta, mostly Filipino contract workers, they will be treated to a big Sunday thriller.

For one, the Turbo Chargers and the Phone Pals have recruited reinforcements with the most impressive credentials among the 10 imports that will see action in the Fiesta Cup.

After finishing fourth in the Philippine Cup, Shell coach Leo Austria hopes to do even better in this conference with the help of Eric Chinowith, a former member of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Easily the tallest reinforcement in the conference that showcases imports of unlimited height, Chinowith, who stands 7-foot1, is expected to provide the needed muscle the team badly needs.

But whether Chinowith is the type that Shell really needs will be determined when he faces off with Earl Ike, the Phone Pals import .

Ike, a veteran of the Korean and Cyprus leagues , stands just 6-foot–9 but is good shooter from the perimeter and a strong rebounder.

The PBA commissioner said that type of reception only indicates that the PBA "truly enjoys a global following, particularly from our OFWs."

CEBU CITY — Host Philippines bared its fangs as it smashed Macau, 25-13, 25-17, 25-19, yesterday to jumpstart its campaign in the FIVB World Men’s Championship qualifier at the University of San Carlos Gym here.

Cheered by some 4,000 enthusiastic Cebuanos, Dante Alinsunurin and Herminio Gallo, Jr. spearheaded the Nationals by combining for 29 hits, including 21 on attacks as RP picked up its first win in this five-day quadrennial meet staking two berths to the next round.

"Mataas pa ang kumpiyansa ng mga bata, magandang simula ito," said RP team coach Vip Isada, whose wards’ participation in this event serves as part of the national squad’s build-up for the 23rd Southeast Asian Games the country is hosting late this year.

"Pero marami pa ang dapat baguhin at kailangan pa naming mag-jell pa nang kaunti," added the motor racing enthusiast.

RP’s true mettle, however, will be tested when it collides with heavy favorite Chinese Taipei at 7 p.m. today. The taller Taiwanese, ranked 36th in the world, drew a first round bye.

Power interruption halted play for 15 minutes when RP led by just a point, 4-3, early in the opening set but when the lights returned, the local bets peppered the Chinese with an array of crisp kills to easily take the first set.

The second set was no different as Gallo and Alinsunurin, both enlisted military personnel, teamed up with Cesael delos Santos, Gino Macailan and Edcer Penetrante in unabashedly piercing through Macau’s net defense.

A set away from a win, the Filipinos, who are eyeing a bronze medal in the SEAG, wavered and almost paid for it when the Chinese seized a 10-9 edge in the third set on constant poundings by Leong Ka Ho and Lai Sai Tik.

But Gallo and Alinsunurin recovered their form and struck back hard as the Filipinos seized 16 of the next 25 points to seal the win.

Earlier, Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Margot Osmeña, wife of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, ushered in the tournament in simple opening rites. Other guests were PSC commissioner Leon Montemayor and FIVB representative Tatz Suzara.

FILIPINO-AMERICAN Jackie Pangilinan has her work cut out for her if she wants to bring home a gold medal in the coming Southeast Asian Games that the country is hosting.

Despite a collection of record times, Pangilinan's father, the Ilocos Sur-born Florante, is keeping his daughter's confidence in check because of equally impressive results by her potential SEA Games rivals.

"Jackie, Nicolette Teo and Siow Sy are posting close times in the 100- and 200-m breaststroke short course yard here in the US," said the elder Pangilinan.

Teo will represent Singapore in the biennial meet to be held here in December.

"It could be a tight race for gold going to the SEA games in November."

The New Jersey-based Pangilinan is working her way to top form, though.

Just recently, she broke Harvard's 11-year-old mark in the 100-m breaststroke of the Ivy League Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.

The 18-year-old tanker, who broke the Philippine records in the 100- and 200-m breaststroke at the 2004 Athens Olympics, finished in 1:03.65, a fraction better than the old school record set by Deborah Kory in 1992 (1:03.68).

In the Olympics last August, Pangilinan shattered the Philippine record in the 200-m breaststroke when she timed in at 2:33.38, almost two seconds better than the national mark of 2:35.01.

She also broke the local 100-m breaststroke record of 1:12.82 by clocking in at 1:12.47.

BANGKOK – Filipino archers capped their spectacular showing in the 2005 1st Asian Grand Prix last Sunday by taking the women’s team gold medal and the men’s team bronze in the compound division at the Huamark field here.

Led by triple gold winner Amaya Paz, the Filipinos crushed India, 247 to 234, to cop their fifth gold medal in the tourney. The other RP archers were Jennifer Chan and Joann Tabanag.

The mean’s team of Raul Arambulo, Adam Jimenez III, Christian Guiller Obmerga and Rizal Ledesma whipped Hong Kong, 240-219, to settle for the bronze.

The RP squad, which was sponsored by San Miguel Corp., PSC and the FG Foundation, finished second to overall with five golds, one silver and two bronzes. Japan ruled the four-day competition with 10 medals, including six golds and two silvers.

Philippine archery association president Leonora Fe S. Brawner and secretary-treasurer Ligaya P. Manalang praised their wards "for their impressive showing in the tourney’’ which lured entries from 17 countries.

"It’s a good sign,’’ noted Ms. Brawner, obviously referring to the team’s preparations for the Southeast Asian Games set in Manila this November.

Head coach Manuel Martinez added that "our archers still have plenty of room to improve.’’

Amaya, 19-year old UP psychology scholar who had previously snatched the individual Olympic Round gold and the qualifying round, also set records in the FITA 70 meters (675), 12 arrows final match (116), and 36 arrows final match (337). Paz, Chan and Tabanag also set marks of 1968 in the team qualifying round and 247 in the team match.

Records set by the RP men’s team were 334 arrows final match by Arambulo), 1866 (qualification round by Arambulo, Jimenez, Obmerga and Ledesma) and 240 (team match for third by Arambulo, Jimenez, Obmerga and Ledesma).

THE WORLD Chess Federation (FIDE) has deferred the awarding of grandmaster titles to six applicants who obtained their norms in last year’s tournaments in Alushta, Ukraine, including that of Filipino International Master Mark Paragua.

The decision was reached by the FIDE Presidential Board at its first quarter meeting in Tbilisi, Georgia, based on the findings submitted by FIDE Qualification Chairman Mikko Markkula of Finland on Feb. 24.

Besides Paragua, the others whose titles were "put on hold’’ were Russian IMs Alexander Obukhov and Roman Ovetchkin and Ukrainian IMs Roman Ovetchkin, Evgeny Tamashevsky, Yury Kuzubov and Vladimir Ragovski.

In his findings submitted to the FIDE Presidential Board, headed by FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumshinov, Markkula noted that Obukhov, Ovetchkin (correct spelling) were "on hold’’ because they were unable to furnish FIDE with norm certificates with their applications.

He also said that his commission failed to receive the Alushta result "and an alleged Spanish norm’’ from Paragua, referring to the first norm that the Filipino chesser claimed to have obtained in Mondariz, Spain in 2001.

The handlers of the Filipino player have insisted that he had secured his first GM norm at the Spanish tournament.

When he competed in that event, the field did not reach average of 2400 required for Paragua to apply for a GM norm.

In Markkula’s remarks to FIDE Presidential Board regarding the Russian applications, he said: "The conditions is most often the details (are) missing. There seem to be incorrect handling of the unrated players in several norm certificates, that is why the norms have to be included.’’

Markkula did not say when the application of the six IMs will be considered again.

Yesterday, twenty-one PBA stars with quickness, athleticism and hopefully the will to fight and die for flag and country made it to the Philippine national training pool embarking on a mission to reclaim the country’s old glory in Asian basketball.

The list include:

Ginebra’s Eric Menk, Romel Adducul, Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand and Talk n Text’s Jimmy Alapag, Willie Miller and Yancy de Ocampo banner the cast that includes one amateur player in Anthony Washington.

Others who made the list are guards Mike Cortez, Dondon Hontiveros, Renren Ritualo, James Yap, wingmen Danny Seigle, Nic Belasco, Tony dela Cruz, Kerby Raymundo, Rafi Reavis and frontliners Dorian Peña, Sonny Thoss, Enrico Villanueva and Dennis Espino.

RP team coach Chot Reyes said Asi Taulava would be added to the pool should the PBA later decide the 6-foot-8 behemoth is eligible to play in the league.

Seven main characters in the recent PBA All-Filipino Finals lead the roster with a young average age of 26, a decent average height of 6-foot-3 and the potential to fit in a system envisioned to work for the country’s return stint in the Olympics in 2008.

Curiously, Menk, Espino and Hontiveros are the only holdovers from the RP team to the 2002 Busan Asian Games.

“The team was formed last January, but I’ve seen the eagerness and the willingness of the players, I want them to play seriously against Macau,” RP head coach Vip Isada said.

The Philippines’ starting six, all seasoned players who are also members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines team, are Herminio Gallo Jr., Cesael de los Santos, Gino Macailan, Avelino Tongco, Edcer Penetrante and Benianmor Lingat, Ariel de la Cruz, Janley Patrona, Dante Alinsumurin,

“It’s important to start our campaign with a big win. So, we can’t take Macau lightly. We have to play a strong game,” said Isada, who will be assisted by Letran coach Ernesto Pamillar.

The Philippines will next face world No.36 Chinese-Taipe tomorrow then six-time Southeast Asian Champion Indonesia on Friday before closing out its campaign against Tonga on Sunday.

CEBU had been the site of a number of international tournaments featuring mostly basketball from such nations as Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, and even Japan in the last two or three years. We even had international boxers coming over to defend or challenge for Oriental-Pacific titles either at the Cebu Coliseum, Mandaue Cultural and Sports Complex or the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.

The Asian Invitational Track and Field Championships were also held in Cebu City before martial law, long before the Cebu City Sports Center underwent a facelift in 1994. Then POC chairman Jose Sering had a political problem thrown on his lap because both the Republic of China and the People’s Republic of China were also entered. A political crisis of international proportions was averted diplomatically, however.

PRE-ATLANTA. Arnis or stickfighting on an international scale was also held here, courtesy of the World Eskrima Arnis Federation (Wekaf) in many years back held at the USC gym and the UV Gullas gym when Cacoy Cañete and nephew Dionisio Cañete were not yet feuding. Who can also forget that Cebu hosted the Asian qualifying tournament in boxing in January 1996 for the Atlanta Olympic Games that year? It was then known as the 9th Mayor’s Cup International Boxing Championships.

Do you still remember that the best amateur boxers from Asia and the former Soviet states came over, such as Indonesia, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, India, China, Chinese-Taipei, Pakistan, Philippines, Iran, Kazakhstan, Krygistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan participated in that weeklong competition? They even swung the Cebu Coliseum doors open for free on the last day so that the Cebuanos could see future boxing Olympians.

MEN’S VOLLEY. That boxing moment will never come in our lifetime in Cebu.

For this, any international sports event happening in Cebu is always an anticipated occasion, such as some of those which may be seen here in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games between November and December, including dance sports, pencak silat, judo, karatedo, mountainbiking and road race.

The host for sepak takraw is still a toss-up between Cebu and Palawan.

One of the anticipated events in Cebu is the first round of the First World Men’s World Volleyball Championships slated March 2-6 at the University of San Carlos. It is the first of its magnitude to be held in the Philippines since 1973, and the biggest for Cebu to host. Five countries, including world No.6 Taiwan and perennial SEA Games titlist Indonesia, will compete for slots in Pool “C” in preparation for the World Volleyball Championship next year in Japan.

TALLEST. The top two finishers will represent Asia in the tournament, including host Japan. Besides the host and Indonesia, other nations entered are Macao and Tonga. If one speaks of Tonga these days, it is because Asi Taulava of the Talk ‘N Text Phone Pals has claimed that he is Fil-Tongan. There is not much we can say of the RP national volleyball team.

However, to hear it from Ramon “Tats” Suzara, the Filpinos have a 50-50 chance of making it to the second round, a first if ever. He claims that the members possess skill, speed and height, averaging six feet and are the tallest ever formed for an international competition.

Suzara is also the Development Commission officer of the International Volleyball Federation. The tournament will also serve as a tune-up for the men’s team to this year’s Seag. See you at the USC gym.

KAHUKU, Hawaii (AFP) - Jennifer Rosales held off amateur Michelle Wie to capture the one million dollar SBS Open by two strokes for her second career LPGA Tour victory.

The 26-year-old Filipino fired a one-over 73 on Saturday to finish at eight-under-par 208.

"I was excited to start the year and it turned out to be a pretty good week to start," said Rosales, who collected 150,000 dollars for the win.

"I am pretty happy. I got my second win and it is just a good start for me this year."

Wie carded her third consecutive 70 but still came up two shots shy of Rosales at Turtle Bay Resort Golf Club.

Rosales entered Saturday's final round with a two-stroke advantage and finished two shots clear of Korean-American Wie and Cristie Kerr.

She left the door slightly open with two bogeys and seven pars on the back nine but battled hard down the stretch.

"It feels good. It feels really good because at the end of the year I was really close, the Open, the Tour Championship, it just kills me every time I give it away," Rosales said.

"I wanted to take it one shot at a time, don't panic and that is what I did today."

Playing in the first of her six sponsor's exemption events on the LPGA Tour this year, the 15-year-old Wie was undone by her worst start of the tournament.

She shot a one-over 37 on the front - her worst effort by three shots - but she climbed back into contention with three birdies and a 33 on her final nine.

Kerr fired an even-par 72 to tie Wie for second. Reilley Rankin shot a 75 and finished fourth at four-under.

Only 13 golfers finished the tournament under par and Wie's 70 tied five other golfers for the low round of the day Saturday.

Wie was the only player to shoot under par in all three rounds as she posted her best finish in 18 LPGA starts.

"This is the best finish I have had and it feels great to have it in my home state," Wie said. "I think my game got a lot more consistent. I shot what I wanted to, consistently under par.

"I just have to work on eliminating those stupid mistakes and making a lot more birdies."

RP archers bag 4 golds

BANGKOK, Thailand – Filipino archers struck hard on the second day of the 2005 1st Asian Grand Prix Saturday, winning six medals, including four golds, in the compound division at Huamark field here.

Amaya Paz, a 19-yearold UP psychology scholar, led the Filipinos’ charge together with veteran Raul Arambulo.

Paz nipped Sydney Olympian Jennifer Chan, 111-110, to bag the individual gold. She also took a gold in the qualifying round, shared the women’s team gold with Chan and many-time Southeast Asian Games winner Joann Tabanag and reset her own record in the FITA 70-meter distance.

Paz tallied 675 points to improve by one point the mark she set in the third leg of the Asian GP in Hanoi, Vietnam in November 2003, when the RP women’s archers also sparkled with four golds, two silvers and one bronze.

Arambulo captured the men’s individual gold medal by beating Myanmar’s Myo Aun San, 113109.

In addition to her runner-up finish in the individual Olympic Round, Chan also snatched a bronze in the qualifying round.

Paz and company’s winning score in the team event was 1968 points.

The other RP men’s entries – Adam Jimenez, Christian Guillver Obmerga and Rizal Ledesma – finished 22nd, 24th and 26th, respectively, in the individual event.

Delegation head Nestor de Castro and coach Manuel Martinez were happy with the archers’ showing. "They all performed well and proved they’d be strong contenders (in the compound competition) in the SEA Games here," said De Castro, noting that the best archers from 17 countries saw action.

San Miguel Corporation, RP archery’s godfather, supported the Filipinos’ partici-pation together with the Philippine Sports Commission and the FG Foundation.

THE PHILIPPINES is up against another struggle this weekend when the National Team battles South Korea in the first round of the Asia-Oceania Zone Group II Davis Cup competitions at the Philippine Columbian Association indoor courts.

The Filipinos, composed of players Johnny Arcilla, Joseph Victorino, Rolando Ruel Jr. and Patrick John Tierro with Martin Misa as coach and Johnny Jose as non-playing captain, will face a raw but talented South Korean squad which includes the reigning PCA Open champion on March 4 to 6 in a best-of-five matches tie.

And if the 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 rout absorbed by Johnny Arcilla from the hands of Hee-Seok Chung in the 2004 PCA Open finals should be an indication, the Filipinos need something short of a miracle to gain the second round.

Aside from Chung, the South Koreans are reinforced by Dong-Hyun Kim, Woong Sun Jun, Sun-Yong Kim and Hyun-Joon Suk. The team is coached by Yong-Il Yoon with veteran Cupper Gap-Taik Ro as non-playing captain.

"It will really be a hard climb against the South Koreans. They are a young team but plenty of experience. What is only going for our netters is their experience in Davis Cup competitions," Misa assessed.

The draw for the event will be held on Thursday at the PCA Reyes Room with the neutral referee, Denis Overberg of Australia officiating.

The winner in this tie will advance to the second round against the winner between the Pacific Oceania-Lebanon tie while the loser will slide down to a relegation tie against the loser of the same Oceania-Lebanon set to with the loser being demoted to Group III next year

JENNIFER Rosales did it, showing the world just what the Filipino athlete is capable of doing.

Now, Manny Pacquiao wants to do just the same.

The reigning Ring Magazine featherweight King said Rosales' recent victory at the SBS Open in the LPGA Tour in Hawaii inspired him to work doubly hard in going after Erik "El Terible" Morales' scalp in their March 19 face-off.

"Gagawin ko lahat para manalo at ipakita (I'll do everything to win and show) how great the Filipino can be," said Pacquiao via text message yesterday.

The flamboyant 26-year-old Rosales, the Filipino golfing wunderkind, put away amateur Michelle Wie's challenge and finished at 8-under-par 208 to capture the $1-million SBS Open by two strokes for her second career LPGA Tour victory in Kahuku, Hawaii.

Coincidentally, Pacquiao and Rosales were named Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year by the Philippine Sportswriters' Association last January.

As if to prove he is really inspired, Pacquiao stepped up his training last Saturday, sparred his first 12-rounder against different fighters at the Wild Card Gym.

The people's champ sparred with Jose Sta. Cruz, an unbeaten prospect from Oxnard, California, then traded leathers with Raymund Beltran and Justin Juuko.

"He is in superman form," according to trainer Buboy Fernandez.

This week, trainer Freddie Roach expects former Pacquiao foe Nedal Hussein and Mexican Orlando Salido to arrive and add variety to Pacquiao's sparmates.

The odds continue to favor Pacquiao, but they are expected to even up at fight night.

Subject: PEOPLE OF THE LIE PART 1

Author:

Date Posted: 11:27:47 03/01/05 Tue

Less than a month ago, a young athlete hanged himself. Friends and fellow athletes believed there were two reasons for his despondency: one was the decision of his partner to finally leave him, the other was serious financial difficulties. In April of this year, he had stopped receiving his sports allowance, half of which he even had to share with another athlete.

I would have written this commentary seven months ago. I made a solemn promise to my daughter and all her athlete friends that I would soon find time to write what I learned, saw, heard, felt, loved and hated about Philippine sports by just being there for the first time at the Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam, last December.

It took this tragic, utterly senseless death of a promising young man and the over-dramatized “rescue” of overseas worker Angelo dela Cruz to fire up my anger once again. We were being made to swallow a daily, heavy dose of hypocrisy and duplicity from our politicians and their hangers-on. We have become, as psychiatrist and author Scott Peck put it, “people of the lie.”

In December 2003 my daughter, Kaye, was about to run her second race in the SEA Games. She was the top seed among the under 23 female triathletes in South East Asia until middle of last year when she decided to concentrate on cycling. The five-member ladies cycling team was barely five months old. Only two, Marita and Tes, were original cyclists. All the rest were top triathletes (Ani de Leon, Bing Alto) like my daughter Kaye. They were persuaded to shift to cycling since triathlon was not included in the Games that year.

The team had no illusion of winning any medal. They only wanted the experience and perhaps, a decent finish. In the end, they got both. All finished with the pack except Bing who unfortunately got caught in a spill started by a Thai competitor. In spite of this and coming in last, she was given an overwhelming ovation from the crowd lining the streets. She had, after all, finished the race undaunted by wounds, abrasions and a bruised ego.

I was in tears and in disbelief when I met each and every one of them at the finish line. The disbelief was for the fact that their few months of grueling training enabled them to perform far beyond everyone’s expectations. The tears were for pure and simple relief that my daughter was unhurt.

(Part II will be posted tomorrow)
