Subject: Senses **JAG**

Disclaimer: I don't own JAG, its characters, blah, blah, blah....

Mac woke up to a strange sensation. Her nose picked up the smell of the rain through the slightly open window. Her eyes caught a flash of lightning as it added a momentary brightness to the room. Her ears perceived the thunderclap that quickly followed. It was none of these senses that had woken her up.

She sat up and swung her legs over the side of the bed. She stood up and padded barefoot out to the living room, grabbing a blanket without really knowing why. She continued to the front door and undid the locks.

There wasn't a moment's pause between her opening the door, and kneeling down in front of the man who sat dripping wet on the floor next to her apartment entrance.

"Harm, do you wanna come inside?" she asked gently, not really giving him another option as she tugged his elbow to coax him up. She wrapped the blanket around his rain-drenched shoulders and pushed him gently into her apartment.

Harm stood looking lost when he felt the contact broken as Mac shut and locked the door. She walked around to stand in front of him, and surveyed his appearance, chewing on her lower lip.

"You'd better get out of those wet clothes. I think you have a duffle bag full of clean, dry clothes somewhere in my closet."

Harm nodded and opened his mouth to say "Okay," but all that came out was a weak croak characteristic of someone who'd been living on a diet of coffee and no sleep.

Mac knew it was a consent anyway, and she pushed him towards the bathroom. Once he had closed the door, she headed towards her bedroom closet. She found what she was looking for, and she walked back to the bathroom, knocked on the door, then opened it, her face turned away from the opening to give him privacy.

Harm took the handle of the duffle, then with his other hand, grabbed Mac's hand, not forcefully, just as a sign of acknowledgement. She squeezed his hand in turn, then pulled it back as he let go. A couple minutes later, Harm came out of the bathroom holding a the bundle of dripping clothes and a towel he'd borrowed from her bathroom cupboard. Mac took the clothes and threw them into the washing machine.

"Do you want coffee or anything to eat?" she asked him.

Harm made a face, then said, "I think I have more caffeine than blood running through my veins right now. And I ate before I came here."

Mac smiled sympathetically, then said, "Well, you're dry; you've eaten; now you just need a good night's rest." She gestured back towards her room, and Harm didn't even have the energy to argue.

When Harm had slipped beneath the covers, Mac turned off the light and climbed in beside him. They were both lying on their backs side-by-side, a mere two inches of space between them that may as well have been a galaxy. Finally, Harm spoke up.

"Aren't you going to ask why I'm here?"

"No. I trust you'll let me know when you're ready," was her reply, and she turned on her side to face him, head propped up by her hand.

Harm twisted his head around to stare at her. He reached his hand up to fiddle with her academy ring. After a moment of this, Mac let her head rest on the pillows as she laced her fingers with his.

Harm tugged at her hand playfully, pulling her over to him. She went willingly, wrapping one arm under his shoulder while the other rested on Harm's chest, her fingers tangled up with his. He stroked her back, revelling in the feel of her warmth through the fabric of her shirt.

Mac lay there with a strange sensation. Her nose picked up the scent that was uniquely Harm. Her eyes followed the steady rise and fall of his chest as his breathing slowed. Her ears perceived his strong heartbeat beneath her head. It was all of these senses that lulled her to sleep.
