I am not sure if this is true, but I understand that the name of our village - comes from the crossing of keys that opened and closed the rail points between two coal truck railway lines. Between the Sirhowy Valley and Ebbw Valley the coal truck drivers walked through crosskeys carrying the keys that operated the rail points on each respective line serving each separate valley crossing at the same time to avoid two trucks running along the same track at the same time causing an accident. Hence the crossing of keys. Has anyone else heard of this?
