Subject: Thanks HPW thats kind of what I thought too but if I was wrong I didnt want to offend any pilots or spouses of pilots when I use it.

My guess is that it's similar to addressing a college professor who's earned a PhD--professors with such credentials are usually addressed "Dr." only in conjunction with their area of expertise. In all other regards, it's "Mr.", "Mrs.", "Ms.", or "Miss", depending on the professor's personal preference.
