You're right about that relatively new (2001) program. But, they remain in the Medical Corps (if a dr) or in the Medical Service Corps (if a psychologist for example) but spend their career with the Aviation community. Excerpt from the applicable regulation inside. -- Fic Recon

"8. Career Pattern
a.
Upon completion of appropriate training, officers designated as AMOD shall remain members of the Navy Medical CorpslMedical Services Corps. Once designated as AMODs, officers shall be assigned duty maximizing their dual designator qualifications and where appropriate, follow-on dual designator tours shall be directed. This assignment strategy will sustain the highest measure of flight skill currency and safety, and assure a broadly based and current cadre of dual designation experience from which to draw for senior management assignments requiring such background and qualification."

OKAY! So they would have a 210X designation but hang with the 13XX (aviators) crowd! I know one other oddity about them: They are the only designator allowed to wear 2 insignia above their ribbons.
