Subject: It's been a while since we've had a new topic to discuss here, so let's try this one ...

I've been a part of the JAG fandom for a while, though not as long as many here. I started lurking on the boards sometime around Lifeline (s6) and was prodded out of hiding by the Paraguay arc, which pushed me into that JAG author's rite of passage - a "fix-the-Paraguay-arc" fic. It was the first fic I'd ever written, and its warm reception spurred me to keep writing.

I look back at that fic now and shake my head. So many mistakes. And yet, writing opened up a new world for me, and I've never looked back. I'm still learning, and sometimes I think I'll never really get it right, but it sure is fun trying.

I was lucky enough to be invited to write for both of the last two virtual seasons, and I went on from there to write in other fandoms and explore other venues of fannish activity. But the JAG fandom will always be my first home, and like the student who comes home from college to do the laundry and enjoy a home-cooked meal, I like to come back here to connect with my fannish roots. That's one reason why I enjoy running the ficathons. They bring me home twice a year.

So, you might ask, where is the question in all of this? I'm getting there. I promise. :-)

Having been around for a while now, I've seen authors come and go. Many who wrote while the show was still on the air have moved on to other things now, and new people have come in to share their talents. New people bring new viewpoints, new takes on old issues, and its always interesting to see their approach to writing.

That said, here, finally are my questions.

Do you perceive a difference between the way new authors approach fic writing for JAG, and the way old-timers approach it? I feel like there is a difference, a fundamental one, but I'm having trouble putting a name to it.

Do you think that knowing how the series ended affects the way authors write? If so, why or why not?
