Subject: Fanlib. Ugh. Talk about a debacle. But . . .
In reply to: lska 's message, "I've been following the progress of OTW with interest. (Just a teeny correction: I think it actually initially sprung from the FanLib debacle and not only from the journal deletions that happened for another reason.) I have some reservations about the way things have progressed; I know some groups feel excluded and that OTW is overstepping when it claims to represent all of fandom. But there are going to be missteps when setting up something this ambitious." on 20:05:41 12/12/07 Wed

I don't know that I agree that it was truly the start of OTW, not that it matters. There was an uproar over Fanlib (understandably), but I didn't really start to see people talking about major change until strikethrough happened. Though, I honestly don't have a lot of time to watch things terribly closely, so it's entirely possible I missed the earliest rumblings.

I think, as with any new venture, there are pluses and minuses to this whole thing, and I'm frankly curious to see how it plays out. They're starting to get an aura of elitism about them, and that's going to hurt things, and yet imho, fandom could benefit from a resource like OTW that might be able to help clear the thoroughly muddy waters. There's also the possibility that OTW can help fandom (in the global sense)present a more united and professional face to the world. This seems to me a very good thing.
