Yes, for me there’s a difference between publishable and favorite, though there may be overlap as well. I agree that the publishable stories need to have balance. They need to be well written, well crafted, have believable characterization and dialogue, if there’s a plot, it needs to be thought out and presented clearly. The best of the best could be appreciated by someone not in the fandom, because of the quality of the story. Some of my favorite stories may not be quite up to snuff in one (or more) of these areas, but either they pack an emotional punch and/or they strike a resonant chord with me that I can’t ignore.

In more general reading, I have read works of great literature that I recognized as great, but that didn’t become favorites, and I have some favorites that are clearly not great literature. Some books and stories are both.
