Subject: Actually, by the time I post a story, I’m usually done with it. I’m the sort that works on each paragraph until I’m happy with it. Sometime a story will just flow, & I’ll finish it in a few hours. Other times, it’s hard work…I might work on the same paragraph for 2 for 3 hours, or 3 days. I work to get the wording & imagery just right to describe a scene. Mom is my beta, although I’ve posted the last several stories without her input. She tends to mostly find the grammar or spelling errors, but…

Have you ever posted something just written, no editing? Just looking for ways to improve my writing, thought you all might have some suggestions." on 15:25:26 12/27/07 Thu

…occasionally, she’ll point out a scene or paragraph that doesn’t make sense or is just plain confusing. She’s an excellent beta, but I occasionally find an error or 2 even after she’s done. Inevitably, I’ll find another spelling error or 2 after I post. The worst is when I’ve struggled to find ‘the’ perfect word, before finally settled for ‘close enough’. As soon as I post & re-read one more time, the word will magically appear…too late!

The only story I would have changed portions of was ‘Joy Cometh in the Morning’, but that’s because it was my first work. I think my skills have improved since then. Funny thing is, it’s still my mother’s very favorite story of mine. So you knows, what may bother us, might be just perfect for someone else.

  • I am a pantser, that is, I write by the seat of my pants. I don't really know where I'm going, and make it up as I go along. The characters lead me, not with the overall theme, but with how I get them there. I do my own editing and proofing. I tend to try to get it right as I type, and can't let an error go. But I'm trying to change. I'm trying to get it all written, then go back and fill in. I don't agonize over each paragraph, but I will often write and just discard the whole thing. If it's not just about there first off, it is never going to make it. I always read my stories out loud. That way, I catch the clunkers.
