I was startled at the vehemence of the people who objected to it--it was almost a personal attack, in one case

I wasn't startled, actually. People in pain tend to lash out - intentionally or not - against anything that brushes too close to an open wound. It's a natural human response. It's possible that the person who posted that comment is like that in everyday life. It's equally possible that they simply gave voice to a guttural, and soul-deep response to a very painful experience.

As to the story itself, as long as it didn't become a political football from any angle (as someone already mentioned, in the responses under the story), I wasn't put off by it.

The story itself was quite well written, and I agree that it was a sensitive treatment of a difficult subject. I wasn't put off by the story itself - only by its timing and the fact that it didn't contain any warnings in the header, so that by the time I realized what I was reading, my emotions were already deeply engaged. I didn't have the same strong negative reaction that some readers did, but it did make me distinctly uncomfortable, and I can understand why some people were upset by it.

I was also puzzled why the people who objected didn't give their names. Why not?

I have a theory about this, but I'm afraid it isn't very pretty. Our fandom, friendly as we try to be, can be remarkably intolerant of people whose opinions don't agree with our own. And, as a group, we have a very long memory. I suspect that the people who posted negative comments did so anonymously out of a sense of self-preservation. And honestly? I'm not sure that I blame them.
