Subject: I wonder also whether Teacup might not have realized how strongly negative the reactions to her story might be... (going inside)

In German there's a saying called 'business blind' (loose translation) - meaning when you do something yourself, there is a tendency to lose an understanding of the great picture, and/or all the details involved etc. For a writer, this can happen f.ex. with regards to typos very easily (i.e. you read your own stuff 10 times and still don't catch some of them). So maybe, in a way, this is an extension of that? I'll try to be clearer:

I think Teacup tried to write a very sensitive and understanding story, with no other intention than to follow the processes people might have gone through when dealing with this tragedy - at least that's how I understood it. Maybe she thought she had covered all the angles and, through her writing, avoided offending? Maybe she believed that, since it is obvious from early on what the story is about (I agree with Theresa here and found I knew the subject matter within the first paragraph), that this was enough 'of a warning' for people to turn around if they didn't want to read a story with that subject matter?

I've read lots of stories where I found nothing offensive, and was surprised at what aspects readers/reviewers would take offense in; aspects that I would not have found offensive and where I thought the writer probably didn't think so either. One small example comes to mind: For the Xmas ficathon, Theresa's story started with a line 'in moments like these, I'm sure God must be a woman' (I don't remember the exact wording). And one reviewer answered he/she would have found it a good story if the writer hadn't insulted his/her God. It surprised me. And I don't think it was in any way Theresa's intention to insult or offend anybody with this statement of a fictional character's thought process.

I'm in no way trying to belittle people's feelings here, and I realize this example is on quite a different scale than what has happened here. But I'm just wondering whether Teacup just might not have been expecting to unleash quite such a furor with her story; didn't know the fic might have such strong effects on readers?
