In reply to: lska 's message, "Inspired by a post on the HB, I'm curious -- is it the role of fanfic writers to be socially responsible, set good examples, or address hot-button social issues in their stories? This question was raised in the context of a discussion about safe sex practices, but could encompass other issues as well. Do you think a fanfic could influence you to change your thinking or behavior?" on 01:39:51 05/11/07 Fri

I've personally discovered I can't write anything--unless I have something to say!! The trick then becomes how to "say" it--whatever the message may be!!

I thought the first time JAG tackled the issue of homosexuality in the military, ("Heros"--remember, that's the ep where Harm fires the gun in the courtroom!! giggle, giggle!), was done in a thoughtful, mature, AND entertaining manner! Again, same approach in "People v. Gunny" years later. Which goes to prove the point a "message" can be delivered without being "preachy".

It's my contension the best/most memorable stories ALWAYS have something to say--even if one doesn't necessarily like the message. Personally, the book I remember most from high school days many, many years ago was a book called "Desiree" about Napoloen's first love. Desiree Cleary ended up become Queen of Sweden and her husband Jean Baptiste King. In fact, the current ruling house of Sweden are their direct decendents. That, too, was a love story--with a relatively happy ending, by the way--but it was also a story about political ambition and how that ambition, taken to an extreme, can twist and warp a person, in this case, Napoleon. (There was even a movie in which Bert Lancaster, I think, starred as Jean Baptiste!!) I suppose, for me, it was memorable because, except for details now forever lost to the clouds of history, it was entirely and authentically accurate!! I know--I looked up the history after reading the story. Highly recommended, by the way--suspect it might be in your local libraries if anyone is interested!!
