I think everyone has to start somewhere, and everyone can get better. If it was me, I would give them several concrete things they could do to make the story better or more readable, even if those suggestions wouldn't take it all the way to the finish line. If you have time, offer to read another draft later. Be honest that some work is needed, but try to be encouraging all the same.
