Subject: Gen vs. Ship. Why such a big discrepancy?

Laurie's comment below about the types of fic that would be viewed as appealing to a wide segment of fandom got me thinking. I think Iska gave a very good response to Laurie's comment, but I thought I'd pull the discussion up here and see if I can draw anybody out of lurkdom long enough to talk about it.

What is it about the human psyche (because gen fic is rather the exception to the rule everywhere I've been), that leads people to prefer fic that focuses on relationships, usually romantic ones, rather than on the wider premise of a show? In JAG, I can think of very few popular stories that don't focus on the Harm and Mac dynamic (and even the ones that don't focus on it seem to bring it in at some level). The same thing is true of pretty much every fandom in which I've browsed fanfic. Most people seem to prefer to write, and read, shipfic.

Now I'm not meaning to say that everybody's this way, because obviously that's not true (as evidenced by Laurie's comment that she isn't a shipper). But it does seem to be the majority approach. People want to see stories that focus on relationships rather than on action/adventure/drama/whatever.

Is that because so many fanficcers (readers and writers) are female? Is there some other, non gender-based reason?

Anybody have any ideas?
