I still think we are confusing bad plots with "out of character" characterizations. If Harm were to do something outrageous, like kill someone, that in itself, isn't shifting Harm out of character, per se. The story might provide a reason in the plot. Characterization is more to do with the way someone acts and speaks on a regular basis, not on the singular odd, outrageous, or inappropriate act, imo. -- Fic Recon

I view "in" and "out" of character as a combination of what is said, how it is said, the context, the circumstances - it's always a combination of factors. The scriptwriters had to maintain interest by creating different plots and conflicts from week to week, but the core or essence of each major character was always "there" and for me, always will be, even as they grew and evolved (I discount the late seasons' pod people - AJ in particular). Of course, many fans differ either slightly or a lot in their view of just what that core/essence was and is, and I respect that, at least to an extent.
