Subject: I think for some it's two parts jealousy and one part frustration. (Inside)
In reply to: Theresa 's message, "When you're talking about people who are upset that they aren't BNF's, then it's obviously jealousy. If the "BNF"s are doing nothing but posting their stories, videos, or artwork, just like everyone else, they should not be looked down upon for being more popular than others. Fandoms are societies, with cultures and smaller groups within the larger group. There are always going to be people who are more or less well known in that kind of society." on 13:37:08 03/07/07 Wed

I agree with what you're saying here, but I can see how the entire phenomenon could be puzzling to an observer. It's not unusual to have a BNF writing mediocre fic or creating mediocre videos or whatever while a very talented "non-BNF" is virtually ignored. I've seen it happen, and I understand the frustration involved.

But whining over it isn't going to change it. Popularity is such an ephemeral thing--difficult, if not impossible, to explain in concrete terms. It's always been that way. Always will be that way. So complaining or threatening to leave fandom because of it (and no, that's not happened here at JAG that I'm aware of) is just plain silly.

Still, it happens. Humans are an odd bunch, yes?
