Subject: I never heard the term "BNF" before, but it's apropos. Yes, I think there are some in JAGdom, but I don't think it's as much of a problem here as it is in a fandom where I used to be active. inside...

When I first got involved in the other fandom, there were a fairly large number of BNFs; there was a cross-section of fans in the group - male lead lovers, female lead lovers, action/adventure writers, hurt/comfort writers, humorous writers, etc. The fandom also had a very active undernet chat room. One group of fans/writers/readers/chatters kind of hijacked the fanfic side of the fandom, criticizing fics that weren't to their taste (heavy on torturing the male lead, lots of angst, very little humor, even though the show itself wasn't very dark or angsty and had lots of humor), and actively campaigning for votes for various authors in the annual fic awards in that fandom. It got to the point where people quit writing because of the BNFs and their "acolytes" (as they called themselves). And then there were some plagiarism cases that widened the split.

All in all, it was pretty nasty, and a lot of us left the fanfic side of the fandom because it was so unpleasant. So while I think there are some BNFs here, I think the general atmosphere is much more welcoming and it's easier for different styles to be appreciated. The other thing is, I don't get the impression that the BNFs here actively promote eitherthemselves or each other.
