Subject: Pre-Season 9 vs. Post-Season 9 (inside)

Here's an "analysis" as to why Season 9 seems to be a magnet for more in-depth stories:

There were four main storyline "arcs" in the series:
1. The search for the truth about Harm's father,
2. What I would call "Australia" as shorthand for the whole Mic Brumby/Mac pairing--and it's aftermath,
3. The storyline leading up to and including Bud's injury, and, finally,
4. Paraguay.

One of the things I noticed shortly after the series ended and after thinking through my own emotional responses--each storyline arc increased in emotional intensity. "Australia" at the time it airred, looked like a tragedy; however, in comparison to "Paraguay", it now looks comedic!! Which is why, I think, a lot of fan fiction writers are drawned to the Paraguay storyline and it's aftermath.

The most disconcerting thing about Season 9 (i.e. Paraguay) is the way Harm and Mac changed placed, i.e., Harm became much more stable, much more "grounded", if you will, while Mac became much more the emotional one!! In "Lifeline", Mac told Harm he made things "complicated" while she had the ability to cut "through the chaff" and simplify complex issues. Yet, in one of the Season 9 eps--or maybe it was early Season 10--, she told Harm he was the one who made complicated issues "simple"!!

Given what we know--and this is an "old theme" with me--about Post-Trauma Stress, Stockholm Syndrome, "dry alcoholism", etc., and given the severity of the situation Clay and Mac found themselves in at the end of Season 8, it's understandable why Mac became "unhinged", so to speak. As far as Harm is concerned, Paragauy and it's aftermath--and starting with "Ice Queen", by the way, was a real wake-up call to change his own ways.

Anyway, all that's a theory--and has anyone else noticed the increasing "emotional intensity" in the four main storyline arcs???

  • Tough question. Although I love reading both, since you really can't say that pre or post season 9 fics are better or worse than the other, I find that my favourite fics, the ones I keep going back to read, 9 out of 10 times are post season 9. Or at least set in the later years of JAG. I'm a shipper and therefor not as enthusiastic about pre season 5 fics. I mean, it's before Australia, before Lifeline. Some of the most defining scenes of the H/M relationship. I can read short fics from their early friendship, but not always longer romantic ones. I always felt like they weren't ready to be with eachother pre season 5. They were best friends with deeper feelings, but at least from Harm POV not yet ready to commit. In conclusion I mostly prefer post season 9 fics, or at least post season 5. (NT) -- Ava, 12:48:07 03/14/07 Wed
