As long as the author isn’t trying to make profit or in some way benefit from the event I don’t think it is wrong to write about it or make a show about it. As long as it is done tastefully and with respect to the victims. With something of this magnitude happening we are all looking for answers and ways to deal with it. Some choose to do that through writing and choose to share that to maybe also bring some comfort to others. I do believe a warning at the beginning might have been a good idea so that those that didn’t want to read about this subject could stop before they got into the story. But we should all be respectful of how others deal with a crisis." on 16:01:48 04/19/07 Thu

Here's my question, though.

There's a fandom wide belief in the "don't like, don't read" mentality. Don't like Harm/Other or Mac/Other? Don't read it. Don't like rapefic? Don't read it. The same argument could be made here, I guess. "Don't like reading fanfic about Virginia Tech? Don't read it."

Which is all well and good, to a point, but it's a bit of a slippery slope. Think of it this way, if you would. Imagine somebody close to you dies horribly. Let's just say it was a friend of a friend who died in a car jacking. Obviously, you're very upset by this.

The next day, seeking a few minutes reprieve from your pain, you visit a fanfiction board and immerse yourself in a story. The story is by an author you know and enjoy. The header tells you only the author's name and the title of the story. You settle in, looking for comfort and escape, only to discover that, in the second paragraph, the main characters fall victim to a car jacking.

How would you feel? Would it not upset you? And rightfully so? Would you say anything? And if you did, and a dozen people piped up in angry defense of the fic...how would *that* affect you?

I just think the whole issue is more complicated than first glance might imply. Yes, we should talk about these things. Yes, we should help each other in any way we can. But what is the best way to do that, I wonder?
