Subject: That's true of all fan created works - vids, 'zines, fic...anything. There's always a possibility of legal action (inside)

In many cases today, production companies are beginning to realize that, far from hurting them, fan created works actually help. They keep fans committed, and often bring new fans into the fold. This can only be a good thing from a business standpoint - especially when it comes to DVD sales.

Still, it's not unheard of for show owners to pursue legal action against writers, vidders, etc. Star Trek did it at one time (though I've not heard anything recent), Ann Rice is famous for her dislike of fanworks, and I think Anne McCaffrey is another. So yes, if authors and producers want to make things difficult for the fans, they certainly can.

All of that said, fanzines don't really open you up to any higher risk of legal action than any other fannish participation does as long as you do two things - include the appropriate disclaimers, and don't make a profit.

There are a lot of print fanzines out there. If the legal risk was that great, I don't imagine they'd still be so common or so popular.
