I don't know if any of you have watched Farscape, but there's an episode near the end of the series that just...guh. So, so, romantic and sweet and perfect. John and Aeryn have embarked on a dangerous (and possibly deadly) attempt to save the universe from itself (yes, it's SciFi, in case you didn't already guess that much). They're on an elevator, alone, and the stress is wearing on Aeryn. She's tired, and worried, and neither one of them knows where they're going to get out of this thing alive. John looks at her, and you can almost see the lightbulb click on in his mind. He puts his arms around her, and urges her (despite her protests), to stand on his feet. When she finally does, he slow dances with her, barely moving, his arms wrapped around her waist as he holds her close. It's a very moving moment, and one I'll happily watch again and again.

In the short lived television show "Beauty and the Beast," there's a scene where Vincent and Katherine have found a spot beneath Central Park where they can listen to a concert of classical music. I've not watched the series in a while, but there's a scene where it's raining, and since their hideout is below a storm drain, the rain's coming in. Vincent suggests they leave, but Catherine doesn't want to. There's a moment where she's dancing in the rain, with the classical music still playing, and he's watching her. Melts my heart every time.

In JAG, which didn't exactly specialize in romantic moments, one of my favorites was a scene in, I think, The Mission. Harm and Mac on a carrier, at night, alone in the wind, and he turns to her and smiles and tells her he's glad she came. There's something so...intimate and perfect in the look they exchange.

In Dr. Quinn, there's a two part episode where Dr. Mike's mother is ill and she goes back to Boston (from Colorado Springs) to be with her. Sully gets concerned and follows, only to discover that another man has his eye on Dr. Mike. Near the end of the episode, Sully witnesses this other man asking Dr. Mike to marry him. Angry and broken-hearted, Sully decides to leave. When Dr. Mike finds him, he's already boarded the train, which is just about ready to leave the station. She confronts him, asking him angrily, "Why did you come here?" He's angry too, and hurt, and lashes out at her. The words "Because I love you!" are torn from him just as the train jerks into motion. He catches her to keep her from falling, and there's a heart-stopping moment of eye contact before she pulls away.

So...those are some scenes that popped into my head. None of them are sexual in nature and they're all spontaneous, and every one of them strikes me as infinitely more romantic than any box of chocolate could ever be.

  • There are huge amounts more than just the two I'm going post now in the same series. In Anne of Avonlea, when Gilbert is close to dying, the last she heard was that he was engaged to someone else. Anne's at his bedside and he says, "There's not going to be any wedding anymore. It wouldn't have been fair to Christine. There will never be anyone for me, but you." Anne weeps, and brings his hand up to her cheek. That's real romance. • I've never seen the Anne movies (didn't know they existed, actually), but read all the books. Now I have a feeling I really missed out on something wonderful! (NT) -- Colie, 08:51:40 02/14/07 Wed
