Random Musings About The Preliminary Show…Take 1
By Judge No. 50 (Sujay of India)
I watched the video of the prelims. These are my thoughts :
++++++++++++++++++
THE FRONT RUNNERS
++++++++++++++++++
Australia : My oh my! I never realized how beautiful she was! She has an absolutely gorgeous face with a smashing body! She really stood out in her swimsuit presentation! Lovely gown as well, although her gown presentation lacked sparkle.
Dominican Republic : Consistency is the name of the game. She had everything : a beautiful face, a warm smile, a confident walk, in both rounds. She particularly shone in the swimsuit round. Her choice of evening gown did not stand out though. While she doubtlessly is one of the frontrunners, I disagree with some others who call this a no-contest. I still feel that she is in easy reach of a few other competitors who could upstage her on the final night. She is assured of doing well, but not winning.
France : I DOTE on this woman. Not only did she show us some of her characteristic spunk, energy and confidence, she also showed us how beautiful she was. She displayed a lot of charm and confidence in the swimsuit round, and her evening gown looked absolutely AMAZING, though her presentation in the gown could have been better. She is MY PICK for the crown!
South Africa : It is difficult to point out what exactly appeals about this woman. I do not find her to be particularly good-looking, but she still arrested my attention. She has this undeniable presence that makes her stand out. She could go either way on the final night, but something tells me that she will click.
USA : Now, this is a controversial one. Some people say that she is not as good as she was in Miss USA. I thought she brought the goods, as she was expected to. She looked pretty, she walked confidently, she delivered. Period.
+++++++++++++++
THE STANDOUTS
+++++++++++++++
Belgium : She has a lovely face, with amazing poise. Elegance personified.
Colombia : Another controversial one. Some people found her presentation to be flashy and over-the-top. Well, guess what? I thought she stood out. What exactly do we expect her to do? Walk on the stage like a zombie? These preliminaries are a war zone, and she did whatever she could to infuse life into her presentation. I for one, did not find it to be lewd or strange.
Czech Republic: Her beauty is simply undeniable. But I have not listed her as a front-runner, because I believe she lacks energy and does not display much enthusiasm of character on stage. She is statuesque, and looked amazing in her gown, but there is nothing compelling about her.
Ghana : WOW! WOW! WOW! What a presentation in the swimsuit round! This girl took my breath away during her swimsuit presentation. She has a GREAT face (which has not been noticed up until now), and she was outstanding on stage. Her choice of gown though, could have been better, though I felt her presence registered in the gown round as well. Honestly, I will be frustrated if she does not make the cut! She is the probably among one of the BEST candidates Ghana has ever sent to Miss Universe, and she must not go unnoticed (as happened in 2002 and 2006 with Ghana’s Walkins-Fia and Asare!).
Great Britain : While I expect her to nail her interview, I never expected her to bring such fierceness, energy and confidence to her presentation. She may be easy-going otherwise, but she seemed to take her presentations very seriously, and seems to be determined to make an impact. Do NOT count her out.She is the best representative her country has sent to Miss Universe in a long time, and she will leave her mark.
Italy : Italy’s strengths can be expressed in just seven words : She knows how to ‘walk the walk’. That coupled with her unique look and ample assets, likely did get her noticed. Do not be surprised if she makes the cut.
Mexico : To be honest, she was overall a disappointment for me. With a beautiful face, and a great body, she made an impact in the swimsuit round. But her look, and presentation simply did not work in the Evening gown round, though I personally liked the gown. I don’t think she can win the crown, but she will place.
Russia : A well-thought out strategy of going slow and graceful. There was almost a meditative quality to the way she moved and behaved. While not as stunningly beautiful as Oxana, this woman tried her best to make an impact, and might just succeed in making the cut.
+++++++++++++++++
OTHER STANDOUTS
+++++++++++++++++
Costa Rica : If you overlook her body which urgently needs toning, this bubbly and vivacious beauty registers a relaxed presence. I liked her, and if the judges do not, I wouldn’t be surprised if she still sneaked in as one of MUO’s picks.
Egypt : My opinion of her changed drastically after the preliminary show. Such confidence on display, I was amazed! I liked her gown, and her brilliant smile! Unlike some women who were adopting desperate antics to catch the attention of the judges, this girl was confident without being irritating.
Ireland : I was disappointed with her choice of gown, but something about her worked. She seems to be well groomed and well-prepared for the pageant. I expect her to shine during her interviews and possibly place.
Indonesia : This girl brought on the spunk and vivacity in full force! Loved her presentations, though a toned body, and a better gown would have helped. Would LOVE to see her making the cut!
Netherlands : I was most keen to see how this leaderboard favorite performed, and I honestly balked when I saw her swimsuit presentation. It was as ordinary, as ordinary could be! She redeemed herself with her gown presentation (wearing an absolutely lovely gown), but honestly, I am most sad to no longer count her as a front-runner. If she makes the cut (if she nails her interview on the strength of her amazing personality, she has a good chance), she has to bring more to her swimsuit presentation, if she wants to proceed further.
Nigeria : Her dark exotic looks did leave an impact in the evening gown round. I expect her to work wonders during her interview, so do NOT be surprised if she places! A smile would not have hurt her….
Paraguay : Though not the most stunning facially, she displayed amazing warmth and vibrance on stage. There was something winsome about this woman, reminiscent of Bolivia 2006.
Peru : This gorgeous, zesty woman, reminds one of Deborah Sulca, Peru Universe 2006. Aside from having a wonderful face, she has a zing to her personality which comes out nicely during her presentation.
Spain : I initially wondered what the fuss was about. Now I can see it. This woman has a striking, cherubic face. Her stage chops though, did not dazzle us like her looks. She had a unique gown, and I’d say she does have a shot at making the cut, but making the top 5 seems a stretch at the moment.
Venezuela : There were some major styling issues as she looked shockingly plain during the introduction, and facially very average (especially for a Miss Venezuela!) in the swimsuit round. Though I must say, she DID register her presence thanks to her smile and walk. She looked much slicker in the evening gown round. While she could have chosen a better gown than the fluffy ketchup bottle, and cannot hold a candle to her predecessors, I do see her placing if her interviews go well. If not, its Jictzad Vina time all over again!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
OTHER GIRLS WHO MAY MAKE THE CUT:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Angola : A beautiful girl, with a good presentations in both rounds. She carried her gown well.
Brazil : A surprise for me! She was really confident both in the swimsuit round as well as the evening gown round. She has well-toned body, and I personally liked that gown. Could make the cut!
China : Extremely tall, with striking looks, I loved the energy and pizzazz she brought to her fashion show presentation. While she was disappointingly more reserved in her preliminary presentation, she chose a good gown, and a good body. She might make the cut.
Curacao : She does indeed have exotic features. I liked her swimsuit and gown presentations, although to be honest, I feel she could have chosen a better gown.
Ethiopia : She has an extraodinarily striking face. It is a shame she rushed through on and off the stage, for she could have made a greater impact if she were slower.
Germany : This woman has a gorgeous face. Although she tripped during her swimsuit presentation, she recovered gallantly, and made a good impression in swimsuit. She could have chosen a better gown though.
Honduras : A very confident walker with a great body and an exotic face, she certainly did have confidence in spades. Could definitely place.
Iceland : While she did not appear as gorgeous as she did in some of her pictures, she did make her mark. I liked her gown.
Kosovo : She was not bad in swimsuit, and her she had an absolutely striking look for the evening gown round. While I loved her evening gown, I found the way she had tied up her hair to be a bit distracting. On the whole though, it is difficult to forget her, especially her gown presentation.
Ukraine : Again, some people found her to be over-the-top in her presentation, and I must admit, so did I. But just a little bit. She was kind of adorable….
Vietnam : She definitely turned heads with her walk. But which way?
Zambia : She has the most unique look among all contestants this year. She brought a fair amount of confidence and energy to her presentations. If her interview clicks, she very well might make the cut.
+++++++++++
THE SO-SOs
+++++++++++
Canada : While she had what could be considered to be the best body of the night (and a walk to match!), facially, she just did not make as much of an impact. Her choice of gown could have been better.
Guam : This woman has a lovely face, and if it were not for fan voting for Miss Photogenic, she probably would win that. While this was apparent in the swimsuit round, her lack of height did her in. But in the evening gown competition, she held herself with great class, poise and grace. While I am not a fan of her gown, she carried herself really well.
India : Her performance in the swimsuit round was a bit of a disppointment for me, as I felt her body needed some more toning. She also did not smile much, and lacked sparkle. Her performance in evening gown though, was MUCH better. She carried her gown (a striking red gown) really well, and made an impact. One just wishes she would loosen up a bit.
Philippines : She put up a great performance in the swimsuit round. Her shapely body, her confidence and energy captured my attention, though she could have taken her time on stage. As for the evening gown presentation, I felt she rushed through it. If she had taken her time, and worked her walk, she could have made an even greater impact.
Singapore : She has a cute face, and gave decent presentations in both swimsuit and evening gown. She really could have chosen a better gown that fit her though.
+++++++++++++++++++
LEADING LETDOWNS
+++++++++++++++++++
Japan : She has pulled off one of the most stunning transitions from a front-runner to a long shot. While she was not bad in her swimsuit, her ill-fitting gown choice was questionable. She also did not have the same level of confidence or presence as I had expected her to. In my personal opinion, she could place, but at this point, winning really seems a long way off.
Puerto Rico : Oh no! Where did her stage presence go? I expected her to burn the stage, and she comes out with extremely straight-forward and and rather bland presentations, both in swimsuit and evening gown. While she looked decent, and might make the cut, the fact remains, she really has to raise her level on the final night (if she makes the cut) if she hopes to go far.
