Subject: Famous Monsters and other film magazines

Alan and others have mentioned reading Famous Monsters of Filmland, edited by Forrest Ackerman. I remember reading it as well, how about the rest of you? I learned about Universal's The Old Dark House (1932) in Famous Monters long before I ever saw the movie. The magazine's original run was from 1958 to 1983. It was revived in 1993 with Forrest Ackerman again as editor, but he left shortly thereafter.

Another popular "monster" magazine was Castle of Frankenstein, published from 1962 to 1975. It seemed to be aimed at a slightly older audience, but it was not as widely distributed, especially in smaller towns. Anyone else remember it? I didn't discover it until after it had stopped publishing.

Yes, I know about Castle Of Frankenstein mag. I happen to have every original issue from Gothic Publishers. #1-25. Plus I have every one of the new version which began in 1999 by Druktenis publishing from 1999-2005. Issue #26-35.

I also have the 1959 issue of Journal of Frankenstein #1. Plus the new issues also from Druktenis 1999-2005. #2-7

I have almost every issue of Famous Monsters of Filmland: I'm lacking #1,3,4,5,6,18,32. I have all the later issues from the 90s.

There were also other monster mags out in the 60s:
Horror Monsters. Mad Monsters. Monster World.

That is true, Dan, there were a number of monster/film publications back in the 1960s. You mentioned Horror Monsters and Mad Monsters, others included Fantastic Monsters of the Films, For Monsters Only and Shriek.

Like Famous Monsters of Filmland, Monster World was a Warren publication edited by Forry Ackerman. Collectors usually consider it as issues 70 to 79 of the Famous Monsters run.

The two most important and influential titles of the bunch were Famous Monsters and Castle of Frankenstein, in my opinion.

The 1970s would see more monster/film related publications launched, including Cinefantastique, The Monster Times (a tabloid style publication) and Monster World (not the Warren one from the 1960s).

Starlog (1976) and Fangoria (1979) quickly became successful and important film magazines, and both continue to this day.

You're right Tim, I thought FMoF and CoF were the most important too.

I do have some of those other mags you mentioned.
Fantastic Monsters and For Monsters only. I'll have to go through my collection because I don't know how many issues of these two I have? I don't have any of the Shriek mags.

I have some of the 70's stuff.
Cinefantatique: Two I think?
Monster Times: About 8 or more?
Monster World: 4 or more?
Also have most of the later FJA Mag called:
"Famous Monsters" - minus the, "of Filmland"

I Never got into "starlog" or "Fangoria."
The latest horror mags I continue to get is "Scary Monsters."
I haven't seen any new issues of CoF. or JoF. in a couple of years now?

Yes, as far as I know there have not been any issues of Journal of Frankenstein since #7 or Castle of Frankenstein since #35.

Cinefantastique was a very good publication in the 1970s and 1980s. The original publisher and founder passed away in 2000, and later the magazine title was changed to CFQ.

I don't have any Shriek mags either. I have a few issues of the 1970s Monster Times, Monster World and Cinefantastique.
