Subject: Trixie's horrifying nightmare; your opinions...

This is from episode 11 of Speed Racer in 1967. In your opinion, what kind of creature do you think. Definitely Satanic, but would you say the Devil, Gargoyle or a mix?

It looks like a mix of the two, the dream a result of Trixie thinking Speed Racer is dead. The devil is traditionally depicted as red, not blue, at least from an American perspective, but the Japanese perspective may be totally different.

Hi Tim,

The background color is red (hell). Had they colored the face, neck and arm color red, it would have blended in with the red behind it. Choosing blue served for a better contrast in both details and for a dramatic effect. Note when it first turns around, the contrast in colors, the full body shot, flaming arms grabbing Trixie and the final closeup.

As a kid it scared the hell out of me!
