Subject: Secret of the Blue Room (1933)

I have seen The Old Dark House (1932) a few times over the years, but had never seen the lesser-known Secret of the Blue Room until very recently. Both are tales of the haunted old house variety, although Secret of the Blue Room is less character study and more pure mystery. It contains plenty of chills and intrigue and, like The Old Dark House, benefits from having the lovely Gloria Stuart in its cast.

In a way Blue Room ups the spooky ante, featuring not just a haunted house, but a genuine castle! Castle Helldorf is the residence of Robert von Helldorf (Lionel Atwill) and his daughter Irene (Gloria Stuart), who is celebrating her 21st birthday on a dark and stormy night. During the party it is learned that the castle has a Blue Room that has been locked for 20 years, ever since a tragedy resulting in three deaths occurred there. Young Tommy Brandt (William Janney) is in love with Irene, and decides to prove his bravery by spending the night in the Blue Room. The thrills and suspense increase from that point forward.

Secret of the Blue Room was subsequently remade as The Missing Guest (1938) and Murder in the Blue Room (1944).

One of Universal's best B films of the Golden Age and a rare gem.

I recently got to see "Secret of the Blue Room" and the two remakes.

"Secret of the Blue Room" is certainly the best version.
I had forgotten a lot about it, so it was a real treat seeing again.

"Murders in the Blue Room" is the second best version.
It's been a long time since I saw this one too.

"Murders in Blue Room" is pretty good. And despite a few mediocre songs and comedy relief, I still enjoyed it.

I finally got to see "The Missing Guest" for the very first time a little over a week ago.

All I ever knew about this film, was what I have read about it through the years.
Which have been nothing but bad reviews in several horror books and by many movie critics.

Well after watching TMG... I didn't think it was really that bad. Though not as good as the other two, it was a lot more entertaining to me than I thought it would be.
