Subject: The Strange Case of Doctor Rx (1942)

Five men recently acquitted of criminal charges have been systematically murdered by a mysterious avenger who signs himself "Doctor Rx". The police ask famous sleuth Jerry Church (Patric Knowles) to help out with the case. Anne Gwynne does a superb job as Jerry's new wife, Kit Church. Mantan Moreland as Jerry's valet Horatio adds some humor, and further comic relief is provided by none other than Shemp Howard, who plays police detective Sweeney (a few years later Shemp would replace his ailing brother Curly in The Three Stooges series of shorts for Columbia). Samuel S. Hinds, Edmund MacDonald, Paul Cavanagh and John Gallaudet are also prominent in the cast. Although he is second billed (just below Patric Knowles) in the credits, Lionel Atwill's role is small until the last reel of the film, but as usual the charismatic character actor makes the most of the part he is given. The whodunit ending is a real surprise, and the final glimpse of the valet Horatio is sure to bring a smile to viewers.

Great review Tim, really brought back memories. I saw this as a kid decades ago. Say, I was watching Chris Pine (the new Star Trek Capt. Kirk) on Ellen and he talked about the under-appreciated Anne Gwynne. He had fond memories of her as she was his grandmother. Ms Gwynne, sadly, passed away in 2003. Anyone know if Dr. RX is available on home video?

I know Anne's son, Greg Gilford. In fact, he's made contributions to my FG website in past years. His mother was a good actress, but wasn't appreciated enough in that town because she mostly worked in B films.

Actor Robert Pine is one of Greg's in-laws and his son, Chris is playing the young Kirk. The other question I'll get to later.

Rick
