I've just finished my second solo costume ever. The first one was lined in white, so it was easy to match the lining with a pair of danskin briefs. This new dress however is lined in a yellow satin that will not match any danskin brief color. The problem...My daughter is less than thrilled with the idea of satin kick pants(She says they look like diapers). So the question is....What other material would you recommend that will be like the danskin/leotard like material? I am wondering if I would be able to use lycra, provided I can find a matching color. The yellow satin is a light yellow color almost a light buttery yellow. Of course worst case scenario, we'll go with the satin because it will match perfectly. But my daughter would be much happier with something more like the leotard material.

-Use something with lycra if you can find the right color, otherwise, dye cotton Knit fabric. Most of my customers want the satin ones now, though.

-Sometimes you can find a satin finish lycra. They carry a lot of colors at www.justmakeit.com.

I am making bloomers for our school costumes. I am using a butterick pattern (cheerleaders), I made the large and medium, and they are ok, but the smaller sizes are driving me crazy. Does anyone have any suggestions for a better pattern? I am using white satin, and it doesn't stretch, my guess is they are going to end up baggy, do you have any suggestions about fabric?

-I've had good success with satin finish nylon/lycra bathing suit fabric and an old (c.1975) Stretch and Sew one piece panty pattern. The pattern has side seams only, no crotch seams to tear, and I finish the edges with elastic applied with a serger then turned under and topstitched with a multi-stitch zig-zag. Sometimes it's hard find a good color match in lycra. You can always cut satin on the bias to give it some stretch.

-Kwik Sew patterns offer the best stretch patterns I've found. I use them to make leotards and costumes for a tap/jazz/ballet studio. Their website is http://www.kwiksew.com/. Most stretch patterns are available in adult and children's sizes.

-I'm not fond of the the baggy bloomers. They remind me of the first baton twirling costume my mother made for me as a kid.) Stretch satin is great if you can get it in the color you want. The next best thing is to cut the bloomers on the true bias to give as much "stretch" as possible to the non-stretch satin and make them lay better--not so baggy looking. I use an adaptation of an old Kwik-Sew pattern that has only a front and back seam--no side seam making the bias cut lay even smoother.
