I've used the scalloped/shell edging and it works
really nice. You just need to space the 5 dcs
evenly around the entire afghan, place one single crochet
stitch between all of the 5 double crochet sets to make
it scallop really well.

I like ruffles too. I work 2 or 3 dcs (or trebles) in each stitch around
placing extra in the corners. Then work one double (or treble)
in each stitch for a second round to make it wider. I made an
afghan once where I did a double ruffle. Work the first in
the back loops and then a second ruffle in the front loops
making the front ruffle one round shorter in a different color.

You can find various edging ideas here:

If you want a shell edging try these pages:

http://www.knitandcrochettoday.com/pdf/Knit%20Crochet%20Shell%20Edgings.pdf

You can use whatever hook gives you stitches that look similar to what you did in the afghan.

Hope this helps.
