I am writing to you because there have been some recent developments that I think is extremely important that the public be made aware of. The past few weeks have been very exciting for my daughter, Amber Ware, but the excitement was short lived. Amber is the reigning Church Point Miss Courir de Mardi Gras Queen. Each Louisiana Festival queen is crowned and then they compete in the Louisiana Association of Fairs and Festivals Queen of Queens pageant held in Baton Rouge annually in February. Amber was one of seven girls in the nation chosen by Pink Sneakers Production to be in a series that will air on the MTV network in April. The series is a documentary on pageant queens, the preparations involved in competing, and the queen’s reign. They were in the process of filming footage while Amber explained different things about Louisiana Festivals and the Queen of Queen’s pageant. They were also filming her preparing for the pageant while she was shopping and eating in our local businesses. After spending nearly two weeks filming footage, the Louisiana Association of Fairs and Festivals informed the production company that they would not be allowed to film the Queen of Queen’s pageant. Although several attempts were made to persuade the Association to change there mind, they refused to allow the production company to film the Pageant. As a result, Amber’s show had to be canceled. I’m looking for some answers to tell my daughter, because I have none.
The Louisiana Association of Fairs and Festivals is a leader in the Festival and Fair community. They actually collect fees to join this association. There action speaks volumes in there lack of caring about the publicity or the promotion of Louisiana tourism. They missed out on a chance of a lifetime. FREE NATIONAL PUBLICITY. These are words copied straight from the Louisiana Association of Fairs and Festivals Web page.
“Help us tell the world that Louisiana has some of the friendliest folks and the best fairs, festivals and special events to be found. The Louisiana Association of Fairs and Festivals provides a way to improve events by promoting them. These fairs, festivals and special events are a major part of tourism in our state. They enhance the quality of life in a community as well as they create an influx of tourism dollars that be spent at a local level. The Association is in existence to help promote the value and importance of fairs and festivals, serves as a strong support group to members with the desire to improve the event.”
Needless to say we were shocked that the pageant director had changed her mind. This is, of course, completely against what they claim to be doing for us, which is to make every attempt to promote Louisiana. The only explanation I was given from the director was, “Imagine the repercussions if Amber was to win the pageant. I thought they were going to follow more than one girl.” I still don’t understand what repercussions she was talking about. The production company has nothing whatsoever to do with the Queen of Queen’s pageant or the judges they chose for the pageant. They were simply going to film the pageant.
Opportunities and potential are of paramount importance. We are very proud of our state and would love to show it off. I think it is extremely important that we let the Louisiana Association of Fairs and Festivals know that the public is upset, since they seem to be in control of our state’s promotion. Let them know that getting free national publicity is something to be acted upon. I hope the public will demand a continuing relationship which will be profitable to all concerned.
