I Want To Go Home Part VI

By Ultracape

“I’m his lawyer,” both Harm and Mac said at the same time turning to each other as the other spoke.

“Dad, don’t say a word,” again speaking at the same time.

“Now stereo I’m not too old to have heard of,” Harmon smiled at the small amount of humor it took to break the tension in the room.

“Dad, please,” Harm sidled into the room past the police and the detective to stand in front of his father, Mac following and then stood by his side.

“My father could not possibly have done this. He was in this room when it happened, Detective?”

“Sullivan, and I thought the other guy was your father.”

“Stepfather.”

“He was in here alone you say?” The detective walked further into the bedroom, to the bathroom and opened a connecting door to another empty bedroom suite. “He could have left and come back and no one would have been the wiser.”

“But that door was locked,” Harmon looked past the group to the room.

“And you would know this how?” said Sullivan.

“Dad, I mean it. Don’t say anything,” said Harm.

Mac touched Harmon’s hand. “Please, Dad. You’re only digging yourself in deeper.”

“Sarah, I got a little turned around and tried to get out that door, that’s all there is to it.”

“Well, it’s not locked now and this room is obviously unoccupied. That gives him opportunity,” said Sullivan.

“Wait a minute detective Sullivan. Just look at my father-in-law’s clothing.

Sullivan eyed Harmon up and down. “Yeah, so?”

“He followed us into the room immediately after we heard my mother’s scream,” said Harm.

“Did you see all that blood? Besides, my uncle said the guy was dressed all in black. There is no way he could have cleaned up and changed that quickly,” said Mac.

“And he had no means,” said Harm

“Where would he have gotten that knife?” said Mac.

“He didn’t even have any baggage when he was brought to me last night. You’ve got no case Sullivan.”

By this time, both Sullivan’s and Harmon’s heads hurt from attempting to follow the two lawyer’s conversation.

“Are you finished,” Sullivan said to both of them?

“I don’t know,” Harm turned to Mac, “Are we?”

“We are,” Mac she said, “Unless you have anything else?” she asked Sullivan.

“Motive, he’s still got one heck of a motive.”

“What motive?” asked Harm.

“This is your father, right? We got a call into headquarters that he was only let out of prison camp in Russia last week. He comes home after 40 years, thinking of nothing else but to get back to his family and finds out that his wife dumped him by declaring him dead and married another guy. I’d say that’s motive to kill the other guy.”

Harm and Mac starred at each other and then at Harmon. “That’s ridiculous, what type of self serving insane idiot do you think I am. I’m old, yes, all of these gadgets and technology are throwing me off, I admit, and I may not be as sharp as I once was but I’m not insane.”

“Sullivan, that’s all off the record. Dad, please be quiet.” Harm was nearly begging him..

“Look, let’s just all go down to the stationhouse and we can sort the whole thing out,” said Sullivan.

“I’m here. I don’t need anyone, especially a couple of legal weenies, even if they’re my son and his wife, to speak for me to set this cop straight.”

Harm and Mac barely had a chance to open their mouths before Harmon stopped them. “I do not have a motive and I can prove it.”

“I’m listening,” said Detective Sullivan.

“It’s true that the hope of seeing my family again was the only thing that kept me going. I loved Trish, even though I had been unfaithful to her when I thought I’d never see her again. I still love her and I know some part of her heart will always be mine. I don’t want to lose that, even if it can only be expressed through the love of friendship. I would not do anything to hurt her. If I had any reason to kill Frank, which I don’t, that would hurt Trish. Besides I have no reason to try to kill Frank. He fell in love with Trish. So did I. I’m not going to try to kill him because he’s got good taste. They thought I was dead. She loves Frank and wanted to make a better home for Harm. Frank made that possible. I respect him and am grateful to him for what he did for her and Harm. She did nothing more than I did but with much better reason. If I can live with what I did then I’m not going to punish someone else for doing the same thing.”

Sullivan looked Harmon up and down and shook his head. “It’s rare in this business to meet a person who actually sounds sane. But you do seem sincere.”

“They taunted me with the idea that Trish and Harm would move on. They wanted me to get angry so that I’d slip and tell them what they wanted to know. After that they wanted me to give them reason to beat me, to kill me. I had to learn to turn that around or wouldn’t have survived. I did that by praying that what they said was true, that Trish and Harm went on to live a full life. They both found a way to do that, with Frank’s help. I thank G-d for that.”

“Wait a minute.” said Harm, “Sullivan, who called your headquarters with the information about my father?”

“I don’t know,” said Sullivan. “It was from one of those prepaid cells. They just know it was from someplace in the city. They’re still trying to track it.”

“From Washington, how would anyone but Clay know that my father was here?”

“Could it have been this guy?” said Sullivan.

“No, that’s not Clay’s style. If Clay wanted someone dead, he’d find an easier way than this.” said Harm.

“The news of the release of the prisoners was not given out to the newspapers,” said Mac.

“Only a few people in the military and the government and the other families would know,” said Harm.

“Why would anyone call your headquarters out of the blue to tell you about my father-in-law?” said Mac

“Whoever called you would have had to know about the attempted murder here,” said Harm.

“How?” said Mac.

“Besides, none of us even knew that we’d all be able to be here until just about 24 hours ago,” said Harm.

It was then that Harm’s cell phone rang. “It’s Mom,” he said to Mac after looking at the screen. Turning away to speak softly, he relayed the message to her. “Frank just went into surgery. Sergei, Matt and Mattie are at the hospital with her. Galina stayed to watch little Matt until we can get this settled. They think he’ll make it.”

As he watched Harm speak, for Harmon, suddenly, things became clearer. “May I go into the bedroom? I need to sit down.”

Sullivan and Mac let him pass as the detective called out to the two police officers that had followed them to keep an eye on Harmon.

Harmon’s cell phone was lying on the bed where he had dropped it just moments ago. Starring at it he tried to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

Who knew he had been released? Several government and military officials, all of whom were trying to keep this very quiet and had given instructions to him and the others to avoid the press. No one except those involved in the release, Webb and his family would even know that he was in Washington.

Clayton Webb had been told of his release. But Webb did not know that the family would be here together until Harm told him that they were trying to get together. He even haed told Harmon he wasn’t even sure that Harm would be in Washington, D.C. when he brought Harmon to the wall.

In fact, Harmon himself had no idea where he was going or why, just that they were having a hard time reaching Harm.

No one in the family would have had to call the police to tell them anything. Clay didn’t know about the attempted murder. There was only one other person who would know.

Who was the one who said the Navy was having a hard time finding one of their Captains and a Marine Colonel?

It was that officer, the same one who told him he had to find the killer. It was the officer that told him the killer would murder his family. It was the officer who contacted Clayton Webb.

Harmon realized that there could only be one person who even knew that his family would be here. Not even Clayton Webb could have been sure of that. In fact it was Harmon himself who told that officer when he spoke to him. That was the only person who could have called the police and told them about him.

But why?

It was then that the cell phone rang.

“May I answer it?” he asked the detective who stepped out of the bathroom when he heard the ring.

“Depends, who's calling you?"

"The Navy officer whose taking care of my paperwork. They need to know where I am."

"Yeah, go ahead, but I still have some questions for you so don't wander off.”

With new found determination and a sense of control he had not felt in a very long time, he answered the phone.

“You’ve been trying to get me to betray my family. You've been trying to get me to kill someone here. Before I answer any of your questions I want to know, who was killed before? Whose family was murdered and why are you so sure the murderer is a member of my family?”

Coldly, the voice said, “Yes, I wanted you to kill, just like you killed before. I wanted you to kill your family just like you killed mine. It was my family that was murdered and you are the murderer and you will pay.”
