Love Letters 96/?

The three people retreated indoors and headed for the living room. Vera McCool was beginning to feel right at home as Harm and Mac lead the way with her following behind and carrying the tray of drinks. Back inside Harm realized what had happened. "I'm so sorry Commander. I guess we're just getting used to having you here."

"No problem. I'm beginning to feel like I'm at home," Vera replied.

"Our friends get to a point where they just make themselves at home," Harm continued.

Mac interjected before McCool could respond, "Yes Commander, we consider you a friend."

"Thank you both. I'm glad you're so comfortable talking with me. Does that mean I'm losing my effectiveness as a psychologist?" Cmdr. McCool asked.

"Not at all Commander," Harm said. "It just means we TRUST you enough to tell you things."

"Yeah, things we wouldn't tell other friends," Mac added.

"I guess I should feel honored huh?" McCool asked.

"You should," Mac answered.

"Well then friends, let's get back to work!" Vera replied and sat down in her chair.

Mac started to sit back down where she had been previously when Harm caught her arm and stopped her. "Mac, let's do this right. Bring your 'journal' and sit here with me."

Mac complied with Harm's request. Soon she was settled in with her back against his chest. "You two comfortable?" McCool inquired with some skepticism. "Are you sure we're going to get any work done this way?"

"Most definitely sure Commander," Harm answered. "We do some of our best problem solving and journal sharing right like this! Mac why don't you continue where you left off before we got a bit derailed."

"Ok, if you're sure you don't want to share some of yours first," Mac replied.

"No, I've responded to your initial entry, now it's time to let you continue your thoughts," Harm said thoughtfully.

Mac raised the pad of paper with her 'journal thoughts' and Harm perused her thoughts over her shoulder. He saw four statements and the fourth the most heartwrenching. He picked up his pen and quickly took the paper from her hands. "Hey! What do you think you're doing" Mac said trying to grab the paper out of his hands.

"Just adding a thought before you start Mac," Harm explained. "You left off one important item." He wrote off to the side as he always did when he added to her journal 'Mutual respect for each other's careers and then drew a heart with the initials HR + SMR inside and Harm loves Sarah 4EVR and handed it back to her. "Now you're ready to continue."

Mac looked at what he wrote and smiled. "Yeah, I think it's now complete. By the way...I love you too!"

"You two mind sharing with me?" Vera said smiling.

"Sorry, Commander," Mac replied. "Here goes..."
Mac had written just a list that summed up everything she felt and Harm had added the one additional piece...
We always have each other's backs
Great partners and best friends
Admiral Chegwidden let us work through our relationship - even when he reminded us we had to work together - Admiral's Privilege
Cresswell kept breaking up the team.....then he tried to make it PERMANENT!!!!
NEVER WANT TO LOSE HARM!!!
"and Harm added"
Mutual respect for each other's careers

"I never want to lose you either Mac," Harm said wrapping his arms tightly around Mac.

"So Harm, how does this fit with what you wrote about work?" Vera inquired hoping to get all the pieces of the puzzle on the table so they could form a clear picture all at once.

"Mac and I had the luxury of forming the great basis for a relationship by being able to share so much together. Yes, it took a LONG time, but by not rushing, we worked through a lot of things that have scuttled other relationships," Harm began.

"Long? That is an understatement you know Sailor," Mac chided.

"Ok, now who's dropping chaff?" Harm replied.

"Guilty as charged. Continue please," Mac said appologetically.

"Most couples don't get the opportunity to share the things Mac and I have shared," Harm began.

"The good, bad and ugly you mean?" Mac interjected.

"Yeah, we've shared some haven't we?" Harm said.

"We have..."Mac said thoughtfully.

"And I can't think of anyone else I would have wanted to share them with nor anyone who I would have trusted the way I trust you to share them and experience them with," Harm answered.

"Me either!" Mac said confidently.

"So you mentioned that Admiral Chegwidden was more flexible than you thought General Cresswell had been. How so?" Vera McCool inquired.

"He gave us more latitude. Cresswell from the get go first gave us a chaperone and then started giving us separate assignments. That lead to the crown jewel..." Mac began.

"the separate commands..." Harm completed her sentence.

"Exactly!" Mac added.

"You know Mac, you had your reservations about the General from the moment you heard he was up for the JAG's position," Harm said. "Looking back you had it nailed right from the get go. I should have listened to you more."

"You were right in telling me that command positions change all the time and that I should give a new commander the benefit of the doubt. I just wish I hadn't been right," Mac replied.

"I was getting more and more restless the longer Cresswell was there. Not working alongside you as much made work not nearly as much fun," Harm answered.

"Really? Why didn't you ever tell me that?" Mac asked.

"Not quite sure..." Harm began. " ...I guess I was more occupied on getting our personal relationship righted. We still had a good working relationship."

"We had a lot to fix didn't we?" Mac asked in reply.

"We did. I just realized recently just how much working with you meant to me. It made me realize that a large part of my restlessness last year was because we were working separately," Harm said.

"It didn't feel right to me either Harm," Mac said and reached an arm backwards and pulled his head in close for a semi hug.

"So did the General really try to pull you two apart or was he trying to get you two to make a decision?" Vera inquired hesitantly.

"I don't know. I know I have some reservations," Mac began. "He said he was happy for us..."

"Mac, he did ask you at our engagement party if you had decided not to take the assignment...."Harm said. "And Jen told me that he had asked her if you would be understanding or mad at him for giving us assignments that far apart..."

As the exchange was taking place, Vera noticed a picture. She wondered if it was from that night. She reached over on the table and picked up the frame holding the picture in question. "So was this taken at that party?"

"Yes, we asked everyone to join us at McMurphy's to make the announcement," Harm started.

"...and to be present for the coin toss," Mac added.

"But you had already made the decision hadn't you Mac?" Vera inquired.

Harm looked puzzled and Mac wasn't sure how to answer. "What do you mean?"

"What made you come in the red dress?" Vera continued her inquiry.

"Oh...." Mac said.

"What is she getting at Mac?" Harm quizzed, not completely understanding where the conversation was heading.

"When did you make the decision Mac?" Vera asked.

"You had decided before the coin toss Mac?" Harm asked still not registering everything.

"You're not going to let this one go are you Commander?" Mac asked.

"No," Vera answered. "You might as well answer. You were the only officer there out of uniform weren't you..."

"It was my engagement party..." Mac replied.

"Harm, how did it strike you that she came in the dress?" Vera asked.

"WOW!!!" Harm said. "I was indeed bowled over by how HOT Sarah looked that night."

The declaration of calling her Sarah didn't go unnoticed, especially by Mac. "You saw me as Sarah and not Mac?"

"Mmm...aaa...ccc," he started his explanation. "Sarah, I have always seen you as Mac the bulldogish Marine and Sarah the beautiful, smart, and loving woman."

"But not at the same time right?" Mac said.

"Wrong! I have always seen them as one," Harm stated with no hesitation.

"But, then why..." Mac started but Harm interrupted.

"Mac, before you go any farther, just let me say this. It may have taken me LONGER than it should to state my feelings, but you are a beautiful, strong, intelligent, funny, headstrong woman with whom I started falling in love with from the moment I met you. I just had to be worthy of you, because I didn't want to mess up what I knew from the start was the best thing that I could ever have...a relationship with you, " Harm said taking her in his arms and soundly kissing her.

Trying to reclaim her senses Mac said, "That is kinda what I realized when I got back to my place after you proposed. I was changing to get ready for the party and it never entered my mind to put on my uniform. What I wanted was a life with you. I realized that I had always wanted men to give things up for me. This time I didn't want that to be the case. I knew in my heart that you needed the Navy, just as the Navy needed you..."

"You said that when I came back after Chegwidden wouldn't recind my resignation," Harm added.

"It was still true then, the night you proposed and today," Mac began. "You had just been flocked as a captain. I could see how much that meant to you."

"But Mac, your career is important too," Harm interjected.

"That's exactly why I didn't just come in and tell you what I had discovered," Mac began. "Going back to my place, feeling the euphoria of your proposal, finally being with you..." Mac began to blush as she thought back to that time, but then regained her composure and continued. "If I had told you that I had decided to resign my commission, we would have fought. I didn't want to fight you. All I wanted was to be with you and if that meant that I resigned my commission to follow you here, then so be it."

"No regrets?" Harm asked.

"None," Mac replied. "What I discovered was that no career was more important than being happy. I wasn't going to be happy if we went to separate commands. It was my turn to sacrifice for love, not for the man in my life to show me what he was willing to give up for me. No more being selfish. It was the best decision I've ever made." Mac wrapped her arms around Harm and buried her head in his chest and he leaned down kissing the top of her head as he held her close.
