Date Posted: 06:55:53 02/05/09 Thu We all know that entering a pageant involves dressing up in a beautiful gown and doing your best to impress the judges; but if you look a little deeper, most pageant contestants enter because they love the challenge of personal development. Pageants require what I like to call “emotional courage”: self-knowledge, self-discipline, and a belief in what is possible. Make no mistake; it takes a lot of emotional courage to compete in a pageant. In many ways, pageants are like the Olympics of self-improvement. And I just love watching the Olympics! Over the years, I’ve noticed that the characteristics displayed by Olympic athletes are the very same characteristics that create a winning pageant contestant. So here are some Olympic champion tips for your next competition! 1. You’ve got to have a dream. Without fail, every Olympic hopeful has a dream or goal in their mind. Whether it’s the Jamaican bobsled team whose goal is just to make it down the Olympic track or a tried-and true diving champion trying to three-peat, they’ve got a dream. So go ahead and pick out a dream for your next pageant competition. Maybe it’s to be a semi-finalist, maybe it’s to win a specialty award, or maybe your dream includes a crown and sash. Just pick a dream, commit to doing your personal best, and nourish your Olympic champion deep down inside. 2. Work consistently towards your dream. Have you ever seen the stories of Olympic athletes who started their sport in their backyards and now they’re top international athletes? Pageant competition is not much different. Contestants who consistently improve and never give up on their dream are the ones who ultimately achieve their pageant goals. Start by making small improvements and just continue working toward your goals. Consistency towards your goal is the key to achieving your dream. 3. Surround yourself with successful friends. It’s no small surprise that many top Olympic athletes train and socialize with each other. And for good reason: you will naturally raise your standards if you surround yourself with quality people. I have a group of five students who have been competing against each other for four years. They’ve become friends over time and each one is inspired by the other to do their personal best. Go through your address book right now and send a note or call someone who would make a great pageant friend. It will inspire you to do your best and you’ll gain a friend in the process! 4. Hard work is part of the game. Olympic athletes don’t just roll out of bed in the morning perfectly prepared to compete. They put in time and energy developing a training plan and then working that plan. As a top pageant contestant, you need to put in a little work reaching for your dream. Sure, sometimes it’s hard work at the gym, or overcoming your nerves in your interview coaching session, but the hard work will definitely pay off. Not only will your hard work pay off at the pageant, but you’ll be developing important life-skills such as self-discipline and goal-setting along the way. 5. Work with a mentor or coach (your pagent board) to quickly improve your skills. Pageant competition is a little bit like ice skating in the Olympics. You develop your skills, get some coaching, put on a cute outfit, and then it’s between you and the judges. Top competitive athletes don’t just wing it in their competitions and neither should you. Whether you need to improve your on-stage modeling, present a more polished appearance, or improve your fitness level, there are experts ready to assist you. Find a qualified, experienced coach or mentor and listen, listen, listen. If you want to improve your skills quickly, there’s no better person than a coach. So from now on, go ahead and think of yourself as an Olympic pageant champion in the making. Only along with that crown, you’re pursuing the gold medal of personal development that will last a lifetime!
