Nathan Burke portrayed by actor Ted Jordon was the town's freight master as indicated. Nathan was kind of a sometime antagonist and at times a self doubter when it came to the main character of "Gunsmoke"... Marshal Matt Dillon.. (James Arness)
Often times he would back the Marshal when a crisis would arise and come up. At times he would be a proverbial "pain-in-the-ass"/antagonist sort and try to undermine Dillon when a serious circumstance would befall "Dodge City" and Marshal Matt Dillon..
At the ending of each episode, freight master Nathan Burke would walk away from the circumstances defeated and knowing full well Matt Dillon's experience and knowledge was correct. Or he would back the Marshal king of indicating how sorry he was in a way..
Ted Jordon actor was the original cowboy figure out in the street challenging Matt Dillon character when the classic series "GUNSMOKE" came about and was born..

Actor Ted Jordon was an actual close friend of James Arness.
Later James Arness influence and imput would create the opening for the character Nathan Burke who would be portrayed by actor Ted Jordon..
