Yep, they are pretty darn huge for 2 days old.....certainly a far stretch from a button quail considering about 3 or 4 full grown buttons could be crammed into one Emu egg! LOL. AND a button lays quite a large egg in comparison to body size, where as the Emu has quite some mass and a 'small' egg per se when you compare it to their body.
I have 3 Emu chicks total and I want to raise them along with the Ostriches....granted not in great numbers but I would like to be able to produce a good handful here and there.
I would like to transition into the beige and white Emus. I've looked into the Rheas as well, and have a great contact for whites and blondes, etc....so we'll see.
I'm learning more and more about all the breeds of poultry, etc as I go along so I am narrowing down what I want to keep for meat and eggs, then have a nice little flock of quail, Turkeys, plus my Ostriches (Orlando and Olympia) and the Emus..... I will have a pretty decent sized aviary setup for some birds that I want to just keep because they are fun to watch and beautiful to see....such as Peafowl, California Quail, Laceneck Doves....things along those lines.
