Subject: Muscovy Ducks...

Diane, the muscovies ARE flyers and perchers.....that tends to be their quirk. I used to find my female on top of the hen house all the time. I still haven't clipped her wings and so far so good, she hasn't tried to take off. I am hoping I won't have to clipher wings but I keep an eye on her. I think clipping would be your best best but they are big so they can still get a good jump in. You MIGHT want to put wire over the top....nothing like a fort knox setup, but just something to keep them from trying to get out and give them some protection. The dog might get desensitized to them as they get bigger. The males are pretty big and sometimes look intimidating.....I never thought my Greyhounds would be able to run with all the birds and other animals.....just NEVER NEVER thought it would happen. Sure enough the one that has the highest prey drive is the one that was first to be fine with all the birds and animals....he's even afraid of the little goat....probably because she head butts and he DID get head butted by the bigger goats before. The Pilgrim male is definitely in defense mode for his territory because of breeding season, so I think that dog has also gotten bitten by the goose....he still loves to stare at the piggies and is intrigued by them....but even the newest greyhound, the little girl who had the high prey drive is now fine with the birds. All 3 still run after the neighbors cats, but they have come to know what animals belong in the farm and which do not...and there's no issues with them and the other animals. It would be just a matter of time and then I think they go into overload because they constantly have the birds around them and they get bored with them.
