It happens, since buttons are ground birds and in a restricted space where they keep coming into contact with their own feces.

The best way to prevent it is to change the bedding frequently and keep their nails trimmed. A bedding that doesn't compact like Aspen or regular Carefresh is helpful too. To remedy the problem, try what Cindy suggested.
