That's a nasty thing that could lead to problems. It's just as Cindy said, soak their feet in lukewarm water and gently wipe with a paper towel.

I've tried shavings with my birds and I hated it. Especially when it always got in their water and food dish.

I use sand and this works well. Doesn't get in their food or water and they love to pick at it. Also, a bonus of this is they love to bathe in it. After I clean the cage I sprinkle some baking soda to absorb any smell.
