Subject: Queen's Farewell Author: No name [Edit] Date Posted: 10:58:35 11/23/09 Mon I've never seen this addressed here before so I thought I might ask. Do you think there is a connection about how well a contestant does at State and how she is treated at her local farewell? Let me explain.....I've been fortunate enough to win 4 locals while placing in the top 5 at State 3 times. The first time I made the top 5 I was treated like a star at my farewell (roses in my dressing room, lots of stage time, etc.) The second time I made top 5 it was much of the same but for a different committee. The 3rd time I bombed at State (Bad interview, I was sick, killer competition with 2 returning 1st runner-ups...anyway you get the idea.) At my farewell I was not even given the chance to perform and told to keep my farewell speech under 90 seconds. This was another title from my first committee (how soon they seem to forget LOL) Basically I kind of felt just shunted off to the side and my function was just to get the hardwear on the head of the new winner. On my fourth and final try I rebounded and climbed back into the top 5. At my most recent farewell it was just like numbers 1&2. Lovey, lovey, kissy, kissy. While I do appreciate the attention and adulation is it strictly because I was able to place well that endeared me to them? What about all the other stuff that I did during my year of service? I was just wondering if any other local winners had encountered this kind of treatment? Then I read that it was the same committee who treated you so well the first time! If all things were equal, then I find their behavior deplorable. I know some pageants (local and/or state) treat outgoing queens differently depending on how much they "Like Her". If the young woman (and in some instances her parents;read Mom) is difficult, she is given little to no stage time. But if they LOVE a girl, it is her show, and the pageant is just filler while she rest and makes costume changes! Last year my queen was the best girl in two heels, she was a dream to work with, and despite not making the cut at states, she showed well. I let her emcee, give a farewell speech and perform twice. Perhaps when you had the same team the second time, you took the relationship you had before for granted and with out realizing it were not as gracious the second time around, and they were too polite to tell you. If you were an impossible titleholder to work with, I could possibly see their reluctance in giving you a grand farewell, but being that you have done quite well in this system, that does not seem to be the case. Having said this, I know there are some catty individuals that run these programs (i am currently a member of such a committee) so this behavior doesn't surprise me, but it is still unacceptable imo. Most of ours made top 10- but it had no bearing on anything. One of our most nasty difficult queens got a beautiful opening number featuring her that was one of the prettiest we ever did. Sorry you had such a bad experience. Were there different producers for the shows? Sometimes they want more or less outgoing queen in their show due to their "vision." They also set up a table for me in the lobby and asked if I would sign autographs during intermission. I was actually a little embarrassed at all the attention but I was new to pageants and thought it was par for the course. In addition it was a local held in conjunction with a open. My first time I was the local winner and the first ever to hold that title who made Top 5 at State so even the community was giving me a lot of attention. When I held a title for that committee again, it was the open title. This is when I flopped at State. The only thing I can figure out is that the ED had been telling everyone that since I had made top 5 twice before that this time I would surely win. Since I bombed so badly (I was unreal horrendous) I guess I made him look bad. I don't think anything with me had changed in the way I handled myself. I just felt really bad I had let them down. "I'll Never Win Swimsuit Cheese Yummy" 1 cup (4 oz.) sharp cheddar cheese, grated; 1 (3 oz.) pkg. cream cheese; 1/2 cup mayonnaise; 2 green onions, chopped, with tops (optional); 6 Ritz crackers, crumbled; 8 slices bacon, fried and crumbled. In a large bowl, combine cheddar cheese, cream cheese, mayo and onions. Put in greased Pyrex pie plate or quiche dish. Top with crackers and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until hot.
