Subject: Kiss the Crown Goodbye: Comments From Miss Texas' Blog About Wardrobe

Shopping with Jean

Kristen: "What do you think of this Jean?"

Jean: "That's great, Kristen, but what on earth are you going to wear it to...We have to get you out of College mode and into Queenly mode."

Kristen: That pretty much sums up major learning experience, number one!"

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is exactly why Texas does not do well at Miss America. Last year's girl was the prime example: chopped off her long hair, gave her the wardrobe from who knows where (remember the purple gown and interview suit?). Sorry, Kristen, but if you consider that as a "learning experience" for winning Miss America, well, it has only destroyed most Texas contestants over the past thirty years.

I've always had this question. What song do they usually play when the new Miss X is crowned at the State level?? Do they ever play "There she is" or another pageant song that they've been using for years? Thanks in advance.

In another thread, some of us are criticized for encouraging and complimenting a contestant in Texas. Why can't we say nice things about "our" young ladies and encourage them to keep reaching for their goals? I don't consider it kissing anyone's butt, especially if we genuinely believe in them. I'm telling you, from personal experience, being negative and cranky is gonna get you in the end. Lighten up, be happy and be POSITIVE...you'll be surprised how much better you feel. Maybe I am a Pollyanna, but I sleep really well at night and am usually quite a happy person. Be nice-try it-you can do it!

Subject: Miss Florence an example in obesity fight

Author:

Date Posted: 10:03:09 11/19/09 Thu

More than 40 percent of South Carolinians will be obese by the year 2013, but not if Bree Boyce has anything to say about it. The Francis Marion University student, who was crowned Miss Florence during the scholarship pageant last month, has become a compelling local figure in the fight against obesity.

Boyce, 20, used to weigh 230 pounds and has lost nearly 100 pounds as she advocates her personal platform of “Eating Healthy, Fighting Obesity.” The West Florence High School graduate’s emergence serves as a voice of reason, and she’s pushing for action in Florence.

A new study predicts dire consequences in the battle of the bulge if trends continue.

More than 48 percent of adults in South Carolina will be obese by 2018 without changes, and spending on the problem will quadruple.

The study, sponsored by the United Health Foundation, Partnership for Prevention and American Public Health Association in conjunction with their annual America’s Health Rankings, says spending on obesity will account for 21 percent of all money spent on health care by 2018.

“At a time when Congress is looking for savings in health care, this data confirms what we already knew: obesity is where the money is,” Emory University economist Dr. Ken Thorpe, who conducted the research, said in a press release. “Because obesity is related to the onset of so many other illnesses, stopping the growth of obesity in the U.S. is vital not only to our health — but also to the solvency of our health care system.”

Boyce spoke to 300 students about healthy choices at All Saints’ Episcopal Day School in Florence last week, her first public appearance after winning the title. Her personal story about weight loss connected with the students, especially when she held up her old, size 18 denim jeans. She wears size 6 today.

“I have struggled in so many ways,” she tearfully told the students. “And I would hate to see any of you struggle the way I did.”

Florence and the Pee Dee have had their share of strong Miss South Carolina contestants over the years. In fact, Miss South Carolina 2009, Kelly Sloan, is the reigning Miss Hartsville. They’ve served well with strong platforms over the years.

Boyce’s platform and personal message just happen to come at the right place at the right time.

We encourage school officials throughout Florence County’s school districts to make use of Boyce as a role model and inspirational figure. We would like to see her booked by churches and nonprofits to tell her story to hundreds in the community.

Boyce’s charming personality and ability to influence children would do as much for fighting obesity in our community, we think, as hours of lectures on healthy eating.

“It is important because these kids are at ages where they are acquiring lifestyles,” Boyce said. “If they grow up knowing the importance of a healthy diet and everyday physical activity, then they are more likely to make the right choices concerning their health as a kid and adult.”

Partnering with Boyce and the Miss Florence Scholarship Pageant is easy as going to “Bree Boyce — Eating Healthy and Fighting Obesity” on Facebook.

In less than a week, she has generated more than 1,200 fans. Comments on her page are interspersed with requests for public appearances.

“Thank you all who have joined in the fight against obesity!” Boyce wrote on the page. “We will encourage ourselves and others every day to become a more health-conscious society. Obesity meets its end in 2010!”

Boyce is working out daily in an effort to lose weight and stay in shape. Her goal is to become Miss South Carolina, which would allow her to take her platform statewide, and to compete for Miss America.

“By telling my story I have already had the opportunity to reach those who struggle daily as I do,” Boyce said. “The positive feedback gives me the motivation to strive to be a healthier person each day.
“Hopefully, I will win Miss South Carolina and be able to take my story throughout the state and maybe, one day, the nation.”

Boyce’s passion and experience are riveting. She’s already making a difference in Florence, and we expect it’s only the beginning.

As Miss UCO, Christian will be an advocate for Oklahomans Against Trafficking Humans, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing awareness about human trafficking, identifying victims and working collaboratively to provide comprehensive services to victims in Oklahoma.

"Many people in our state are unaware Oklahoma ranks number seven in the nation for sex trafficking, and as Miss UCO, I’ve been given an opportunity to really broadcast this issue,” Christian said. "I plan on going to law school for Human Rights Law, so my career and heart is and will be devoted to doing what I can in whatever capacity I’m filling to bring this issue to light. Because the Miss America system empowers young women, I knew it was time for this crime to be represented at the Miss Oklahoma pageant.”

In addition to the trophy, crown and title, Christian received a $1,800 UCO tuition waiver scholarship, a $500 cash scholarship, a wardrobe allowance, a necklace from Fields Jewelry and personal training sessions with 180° Personal Training.

First runner-up Heidi Heineman, a sophomore from Tulsa, received a $1,200 UCO tuition waiver scholarship and a $250 cash scholarship.

Amanda Barfield, a senior from Broken Arrow, is second runner-up and received a $1,200 UCO tuition waiver and a $200 cash scholarship.

Third runner-up Natasha Irons, a junior from Broken Arrow, received a $1,200 UCO tuition waiver and a $150 cash scholarship.

Stephanie Villanella, a sophomore from Skiatook, is fourth runner-up and received a $1,200 UCO tuition waiver scholarship and a $100 cash scholarship.

The Miss Congeniality Award went to Irons. Heineman was the Talent Winner. The Physical Fitness in a Swimsuit Award went to Christian and the People’s Choice winner was Villanella.

Lindsey Allen, a freshman from Lawton, received the Director’s Award, which includes a $100 cash scholarship.

Trivette

by MEGAN NORTHCOTE
Intern Lifestyles Reporter

Junior public relations major Marcie R. Trivette stood on the stage at Mt. Pleasant High School, her heart thumping in her chest, as she heard the announcer call the names of the runner-ups for the Broadway-themed 2010 Miss Cabarrus County pageant.

As awards for best talent, swimsuit and eveningwear were presented, Trivette’s hopes began to sink; her name was yet to be called.

“And the 2010 Miss Cabarrus County is...”

The pause built with anticipation from the crowd.

“Miss Marcie Trivette!”

It took a few moments before the realization sank in, but when it did, Trivette ran to the front of the stage and was crowned by 2009 Miss Cabarrus County Mallory Honeycutt.

Trivette was then awarded a $1,000 scholarship to help pay her tuition at Appalachian State University.

“As a little girl sitting at Christmas parades, watching the pageantry queens ride by, you’re always like, ‘Oh I want to be that one day,’” Trivette, who will ride atop a float in the Concord Christmas Parade, said.

Trivette will now focus on winning the title of Miss North Carolina in Raleigh June 26 and the winner of Miss North Carolina will compete in Miss America.

To prepare for Miss North Carolina, Trivette will be coached by Miss Cabarrus County’s Executive Director Deanna M. Barnhardt.

“Everthing I’ve heard about her is that she’s so sweet and funny,” Barnhardt said. “She’s got the personality and drive that we need. I think she’s got what it takes.”

Barnhardt has been involved with the Miss America Organization more than 30 years and has served as a local executive director for the last 15, recruiting and working closely with women and preparing them for their pageants, including helping each contestant develop their platforms.

Each year, Trivette volunteers at the Samaritan House in Concord, her hometown, serving meals and socializing with homeless patrons.

One day, a girl whom she graduated high school with was admitted to the shelter. After the experience, Trivette decided to make homelessness her platform.

“It’s not just stereotypical people [who] we think are homeless,” Trivette said. “It’s young people, too, people like us.”
The interview portion of the pageant worried Trivette the most.

She believes daily preparation with her interview coach and previous Miss Cabarrus County judge James Bennett prepared her for answering the question, among others.

“You never know what they’re going to ask you,” Trivette said. “You hope you can make it sound perfect.”

Every day for one year, Bennett drilled Trivette with practice interview questions.

“We tried to do a little bit of everything: current events, surprise questions,” Bennett said. “I tried to help her build her confidence in a lot of different ways.”

Within the first few weeks of Trivette’s junior year of high school, she was in a car accident, preventing her from joining any sports teams or extracurricular activities.

Hoping to meet new people, Trivette entered the 2005 Miss Mt. Pleasant High School pageant after hearing an announcement over the intercom.

In her first pageant, Trivette was contestant number seven on the stage of Mt. Pleasant High School. The pageant was Broadway-themed. She won.

It was on the same stage, with the same theme and the same contestant number that Trivette would also win Miss Cabarrus County four years later.

“Never give up on your dream,” Trivette said. “If you don’t get it the first time, just try again.”

Date Posted: 18:10:21 11/17/09 Tue

By Amanda Finnegan · November 16, 2009 · 12:10 PM

Planet Hollywood has rolled out a new promotion that makes rooms at the Strip resort cheaper than many of Las Vegas’ budget hotels.

The hotel-casino’s Phanatic Pass offers 10 nights for $599, making each night’s stay less than $60. But the 10-night stay doesn’t need to be done all at once. The offer gives visitors the option of being flexible.

The nights need to be used between Nov. 15 and March 15, 2010.

The Phanatic Pass has no blackout dates so guests can use the deal during big weekends including New Year’s, the Super Bowl and upcoming events like Miss America and the Dave Matthews Band concert.

The deal includes a standard room at Planet Hollywood with views of the Bellagio fountains and a complimentary bottle of liquor of the guest's choice. The Phanatic Pass lets visitors bypass resort fees but a 12 percent tax does apply.
