My daughter competed in a Miss State Pageant and she didn’t make it as a semifinalist. I was crushed. I suggested to her that she needs to get a pageant coach, so she had. As a mother, I want to protect my daughter, her heart and her feelings. She has the looks but to be honest, I don’t feel her resume can compete with the girls that made it as semifinalist. She’s 23 years old in community college and by the time the next pageant comes around, she would not be a graduate. She has little modeling and acting experience, works fulltime goes to school at night and still with her busy schedule she finds the time to work her passion, community service. Do I have it wrong? Does she have a chance? As I stated before, I want to protect my daughter so I don’t want her to get her hopes up time and time again to be disappointed. Many of the girls in the pageant were recruited; she simply applied on her own. I know the state pageant system looks for girls who look good in person as well on paper. Could anyone on the board give me some advice?

Miss Lois Eleanor Delander, of Joliet, Illinois, entered as Miss Illinois in the Atlantic City Beauty pageant, was selected by the judges as being America's most beautiful for 1927. Central figures in the front row are Miss America of 1926 Norma Descygne Smallwood, Armand T. Nichols, director general of the pageant, and Princess America, prettiest Indian maiden in the U.S.

Miss America 1927 Lois Delander - Joliet, Illinois

Lois Delander was born on Valentine's Day, and won the Miss America title at sixteen on her parents’ twentieth anniversary. As a surprise, her father drove all the way to join his family only to arrive fifteen minutes before she was crowned. Lois had given herself so little a chance of winning that she had packed her bags for departure the night before the finals.

Soft-spoken and studious, Lois was a high school Junior while also attending the Chicago School of Industrial Art. She was a member of the glee club, a student of the piano and classical ballet, and had won both a musical memory contest and a medal for knowing Biblical verses. She excelled in Latin.

The daughter of a county clerk and his wife, Lois and her family were almost overcome by the media attention of her selection as Miss America. It was reported that theatrical concerns were willing to pay her $1,000 a week for stage appearances, but Lois worried about "catching up" in school, which had already started back home. Without ambitions for a film or stage career, Lois soon returned home to her studies.

She said she won a scepter, four trophies, a Bulova watch, an Oldsmobile, and a screen test, which she never took. She also had the privilege of meeting President Coolidge, Red Grange, Charles Lindbergh, Fred Waring, and Amelita Galli-Curci.

After college, she married stockbroker Ralph Lang and raised three daughters. "I've lived happily ever after," she said. Lois was the grandmother of seven and lived in a suburb of Chicago when she passed away in 1985 at age 74.

This is the girl who was 1st RU in 2009, 2nd RU in 2008, and 4th RU in 2007. Does she look like the next Miss MS to you? This is her headshot from the local she won last week.
