Subject: lost my dog Lucky,May 5/03

I had to put my German Shepard Lucky to sleep on monday.I had him 13 years this month. He was dumped on the side of the road and left to fend for himself until he wandered up to my house. He was thin and frightened but I managed to coach him to me.I took him to the vet to have him checked. He figured he was between 6 and 8 months old.I decided to keep him and named him Lucky because he had found a good and loving home.I lost my horse Boomer last august and I new Lucky was getting weaker by the day, even last year.I did not think I would have him by Christmas, but he proved me wrong with his strong will to keep going. These last few weeks he was falling down all the time and was having trouble to get up.He grew into a big dog weighing 100 pounds. My husband had to lift him up quite often when he was having trouble.I have a bad back and arthritis and when my husband was at work and Lucky could not get up,it was very difficult for me.I used to put a small slip proof under his back legs and coach him up,and he managed this O.K. until this week.I was so frightened he might break a leg in his efforts to get up.He was a very protective watch dog and would still go crazy when someone came to the door or even turned in our driveway. He would get so excited it made him fall even more with his weak back end.We decided on monday to end his suffering and let him go to Rainbow Bridge with all the other fur babies. It was such a difficult decision, but I believe the right one.He did not deserve to suffer. We both miss him so much, the house seems so empty without him. Please tell me we did the right thing for our faithful friend.I visit this site quite often and know we are not alone in the love for our pets, but it still hurts so much.We love you so much,Luck dog,and will never forget you.I believe you are now out of pain.Till we meet again.
