I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my special cat, Chandler, on May 29th. He too was coughing. Unfortunately, I was on vacation and my best friend was watching him. He was fine one day and the next he was having a hard time breathing. He died that night of pulmonary edema and an embolism. You mention your guilt. I feel the same way. I told my doctor that I felt so guilty for not being there. She said you were there for all of the other times. You should feel the same way. I was told that cats can really mask their pain and by the time we realize, it can be too late. I feel a terrible emptiness, as I'm sure you do. Someone sent me a poem that ended, "When tomorrow starts without me, Don't think we are far apart, For every time you think of me, I'm right here, in your heart".
If you'd like to email and tell me about Cubby, I'd love to hear from you. It's funny, my brother was killed just 2 months ago in a motorcycle accident and I've cried 10 times over for my cat. I loved him more than just about anyone.
Again, I'm very sorry for your loss. Please try not to feel guilty - most people do when their pets die. They're like our children and they rely on us for everything. If I could turn back the time, I would never have gone on vacation.
I hope I hear from you.
Pat
