Mila,

Think of this as sending a gift to your mother. My the three year old grandson once told the story of seeing our beloved dog sleeping on "God's front porch". The image was such a comfort, that I was able to let go.
Imagine your mother holding your companion and loving her as much as you do. Remember that we are creatures of loss. Nothing stays the same. Give yourself time to grieve and then go out and rescue a kitten that needs your love.
The important thing is to allow your friend to die with dignity. Don't let her starve to death. The vet will give the injection and your companion will cease to breath. There is no pain (for her), no struggle, nothing but a peaceful sleep. Take a human friend with you (a husband is really best), be sure you have a box ready(plastic storage containers with soft blankets work well),and have the hole dug somewhere that she loved to sleep or watch. Ask God often for comfort ... every ten minutes if necessary ... and you will find the strength to go on. We all do.
